Poll: Your Favorite Punk Songs

Wed Dec 14, 2005 7:57 am

REAL punk, not recent whino-punk. I'll allow Bad Religion and The Descendents

"Police on my Back" by The Clash

"Now I Wanna Sniff Some Glue" by The Ramones (aw hell, at least 30 Ramones songs could sub in its place

"New Rose" by The Damned

"In The City" by The Jam (borderline punk, at best, but a great song)

"Police State" by the U.K. Subs

Holiday in Cambodia - Dead Kennedys
I wanna be sedated - Ramones
Anything really by the Ramones/Clash/Dead Kennedys/Bad Religion et al.
I could go on and on. I think you should also allow NOFX in this crowd as they currently hold the mantle for Punk Rock that still has radical/confrontational lyrics about society not "I lost my girlfriend and she sucks" kinda shit like a lot of 'So Cal' Punk.

When I was young and stupid, I used to listen to Ministry when I was stoned. Couldn't tell you the name of one damn song, but I do remember listening to it.

This song wasn't really considered "punk", but at the time, it was pretty edgy. The song is, "Turning Japanese" by the Vapors.

The Clash: "London Calling," "Death or Glory," "Clash City Rockers," "Bank Robber" (if their cover counts as punk), "White Riot," many many others...

The Damned: "Plan 9 Channel 7," "Love Song," "Rabid," "Melody Lee," "Wait for the Blackout," some later stuff too which maybe counts more as Goth than punk...

Stiff Little Fingers: "Suspect Device," "Nobody's Hero," "Doesn't Make it Alright"

Adverts: "One Chord Wonders"

X-Ray Spex (surely has to count): "Germ-Free Adolescents"

The Pogues (I'm going to count them definitely): "London You're a Lady" (some of the greatest poetry ever put to rock music), "The Broad Majestic Shannon," "The Body of an American," "A Man You Don't Meet Every Day," "Dark Streets of London," "Young Ned of the Hill," and for the Punkness factor: "Fiesta"

Operation Ivy: "Freeze Up," "Jaded"

Descendents: "Myage," "Clean Sheets"

Bad Religion: "You," "Billy," "Big Bang," "Anastasia"

Social Distortion, "Ball and Chain"

Rancid: "Detroit," "Radio" (7-inch version) [This is some of the best real punk of recent years]

----------
I'm sure I'll think of more. Thanks for making me get out some great old music I haven't listened to for a while....

I'm gonna have to go with The Clash's London Calling, the Sex Pistols with God Save the Queen, and I know you're all going to flog me for this but what the hell, I'll throw in the Jesus of Suburbia medley by Green Day for lyrical reasons.

Ramones: I wanna be sedated, Rock N' Roll High School. too many to list really.

Dead Kennedys: too many to list really, but Ill list a few. Holiday in Cambodia, Kill The Poor, California Uber Alles, Forest Fire, Halloween

Misfits: Halloween, Hybrid Moments, Bullet, Horror Hotel, We Bite; also too many to list

Circle Jerks: World up my Ass

Angry Samoans: Right Side of my Mind

Bad Religion: Fuck Armaggedeon this is Hell, Yesterday

NOFX: theres a few songs, but their names escape me at the moment.

I'm so sick of this so-called "punk" that is coming out as of late. This emo shit just boils my blood. Real punk has been dead, or on life support since the late 80s.

"Bloodstains" - Agent Orange
"Holidays in the Sun" - Pistols (Anything from Bollocks really)

I have a couple disks I made of punk but I'll be damned if I can remember the titles.

Just checking the thread to make sure somebody had mentioned "Institutionalized" by Suicidal Tendencies. Someone above had, so carry on!

I seem to enjoy the "poppier" side of punk (Clash London Calling album, "Alone Again Or" by The Damned and "Ever Fallen in Love?" by The Buzzcocks, but Institutionalized is a great song.

Lots of mine already mentioned.

The Clash were always one of my favourite bands, so I'll shout up one track I don't think has been mentioned thus far:

Safe European Home

They used to open their US tours with it, which always went down spectacularly badly because of the lyrics (but showed an excellent sense of humour!), but it's a great, great song.

Honourable mentions for the first few Ramones albums, for the Clash in general, for sure many other good ones have already been mentioned.
But for me, Never Mind The Bollocks by the Sex Pistols, both sides, still after all these years, my favourite album.

A much younger GDB, got a record token for his birthday, (really way too young to buy The Pistols records), but I did.
Mum at the time worked for EMI records (who had ejected The Pistols), she had even been one of those who had objected to handling them.
Or dear....not best pleased with my choice of spending that token.
Even had a song on the album about my Mum's then employer.

The only punk in that list is The Clash. Bowie is not Punk, and 70s Bowie is Glam Rock. Early Cure can be considered punk (much like early Siouxsie and the Banshees can), but none of that is early Cure.

Quoting N229NW (Reply 12):

The Pogues (I'm going to count them definitely):

Yes and no at the same time. While Shane was a fixture on the London Punk Scene at it's heyday, the Nips (AKA The Nipple Erectors) were more Punk than the Pogues ever were (And the Nips are considered by some to be a Mod Revival band as opposed to Punk; Shane hung around The Jam a lot, and Paul Weller used to frequent Nips shows.). Compared to what the bulk of the music of the 1980s was, The Pogues were punk. The Pogues are an Irish band with Punk Rock sensibilities. Just the name alone gives that effect; and when you consider that before they started to call themselves The Pogues (and even Pogue Mahone), they were calling themselves The New Republicans (Which in 1980s London would have gone over like naming a band today after Bin Laden).

I've taken a great deal of shit for this, and all by people who haven't listened to the disc to which I am referring. So tell me: what is punk?

All you punk fans should check out a group from the old days called The Forgotten Rebels. "Fuck Me Dead" is the best punk song ever in my opinion. Also "Surfin on Heroin" "Bomb the Boats" "Live Strippers in Action"

Sure, but they were so good, how could I not find a way to put them on here?  wink

Also, more Rancid. Writing that other post got me listening to them for the first time in a little while. Matt Freeman is just the most amazing bassist. I suppose one could argue that his virtuosity is very un-"punk," but it is done in such an aggressive and usually self-effacing way that it seldom sounds showy for show's sake. Mainly it just drives the songs. Furthermore, his bass playing adds an element that is totally different, so they really don't just sound like recycled Clash, for those that claim they do.

So, another Rancid song or three: "Not to Regret," "Rejected," and "As One"

No. More New Wave than Punk. Punk doesn't use synths, samples and loops like B.A.D. did. Same goes for Public Image Ltd. as well.

"Too Drunk To Fcuk" by Dead Kennedys (how appropriate)
"Elvis is Dead" by Forgotten Rebels (think i'm next)
"Why'd ya do it" by Marianne Faithful (seemed like a good idea at the time)

There's more but i gotta go

"Orgasm Addict" by the Buzzcocks (Pete Shelley is a mate of mine!)

"She sells sanctuary" by the Cult is another favourite of mine

"Crash" by the Primitives is an all time favourite, and I also like "This corrosion" by Sisters of Mercy although they are more Goth than punk.
Lead me not into temptation, I can find my own way there...
