Best Horror Movie You Have Seen?

Sat Dec 17, 2005 3:59 am

I have just finished watching Saw having seen Saw II first. Both rate pretty high in terms of the 'scare factor'.

Have you seen anything scarier?

The Exorcist remains the scariest thing I've seen on film. Still gets me.

Classic !!

An oldie, but 'The haunting' was scary, more recently 'The Grudge'
'Deathwatch' also good

Totally agree. A revolutionary film switching the emphasis from the supernatural to the psychological. And Bernard Hermann's terror-enhancing score.

Not really a horror movie, but the one that left me the most shaken was the original "Alien". I don't do well with 'gotcha' moments, and that movie had more than it's share. I will shamefully admit I slept with the light on for a couple nights after I saw that.

Other than that, I avoid horrer movies like the plague (that whole 'gotcha' thing).

Pretty much anything is scarier than Saw. I find it a grosse move and a movie full of killing and blood, but not scary. I can also get people to use props and red paint to make shocking scenes. For me, horror means spiritual stuff and mysterious stuff. The kind of stuff that gives you nightmares when you go to bed. Not some guy with a knife and mask, a chainsaw, or just a saw.

Back in the day when Poltergiest was a hit, it affected me for weeks.

Was watching The Ring, as soon as the credits rolled - someone decided to call.

The Grudge had it moments.

Just finished playing the game FEAR. That one is freaky.

Not sure if it was actually ever a movie (it was shown in several parts on TV in the UK), but the first time I ever saw the original Salem's Lot (the one with David Soul) I was scared sh!tless!!

Rosemary's Baby.

It is scary because of what you don't see, and the way the "residents" of the The Bramford (AKA the Dakota) are just normal people.

No blood, no guts. Just fear.

Also, many people think they see the baby in the movie, but it is never shown.

An American Werewolf in London (1981)

A wolf whose bite is definitely worse than his bark chomps a young backpacker taking a shortcut across the British moors one night. Before long, the traveler gets long in the tooth! But this howler has a different twist: a sharp sense of humor blacker than the Arctic sky on the winter solstice. John Landis wrote the screenplay and directed.

Did you watch it when it was shown in the early 80's? I remember it was all we could talk about at school for days after, especially the bit when The Master springs up off the kitchen floor...damn, I'm gonna have to sleep with the light on tonight now!!  wink

Carpenter's The Thing.

I am a big fan of horror movies and I am quite used to them or "prepared", but I have to admit that this one did not let me sleep the usual nights I do for at least a couple of days.

And the "Antartican" atmosphere was quite good as well. And you never know what will happen next.

Hurg, that dog's head beginning to split open like a flower, AAAAWWWW my god!!!!!

E.T  scared

Not that many scary movies out there but the only one that I remember that made an impact on me was Event Horizon. Something about the setting of space that makes movies very scary.

Evil Dead I, a classic even though it gets sort of a schlockfeast in the end!
Exorcist, a classic as well, no doubt!

Not really a horror film, but when I was about 5 or 6, I saw "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane" on television. Traumatized me for Bette Davis for years. However, over the years I saw "All About Eve," "Petrified Forest," "Mr. Skeffington," and a number of others...

then I met this wonderful, legendary actress before she died...(I told her that Baby Jane frightened me as a child, she asked me if I was sure it was her role or was it Joan Crawford's that did it...meow!)...

...and I have loved her ever since.
If it pisses off the right, I'm all for it.

While it was ruined by an endless parade of increasingly lame sequels, the original Friday the 13th was quite an effective horror movie.

What kept me awake several night was the "Amitywille".

Not sure of the spelling there, but the house that is haunted by the devil. Rather old and outdated now, but I can still watch it and find it a good classic.
