An A.net Challenge

Sun Dec 18, 2005 1:29 pm

OK, we've all bashed each other on a forum wherein we cannot be terribly accountable for our actions.

Clipperhawaii has said that all Liberals are stupid, and I had a few things to say about that:

http://www.airliners.net/discussions/non_aviation/read.main/1037516/

See posts #67 and #68.

Now, I'm willing to travel to any destination in the contiguous US (at my own expense) and debate this guy. I would welcome questions from any and all A.netters. This is not a trivia contest, but a measure of political opinion. Not history, but an argument of philosophy. Anyone want to suggest questions? This could be one of the best A.net meets ever. Maybe we could set up a Liberal.net team vs a Conservative.net team in a debate.

My first task is to prove that liberals are not all idiots. My second task is to figure out if conservatives such as Clipperhawaii actually have the brains to back up their smear tactics.

Who's in? Again: suggest a location, and show up. I'm there.

I have a question. Why is it that in a nation of justice, liberty and democracy, what is acceptable about breaking laws to catch criminals? There seems to be an attitude that if we're not directly affected by these intrusions, these actions should be disregarded for the public good. (Not that I'm saying that I'm indicting anyone yet, I've already stated how I feel and what I'm waiting for before saying that laws were broken.) I want to hear why those who say are acting in our best interests advocate breaking the law. Plainly and clearly.

Why is it that conservatives defend the ideals of "Freedom" and "Liberty" yet oppress at every oportunity the Gays, Pro-Choicer's, Liberals, and other groups who choose the path of dissent?

Good points, Westy, and Kapa. Now, who's willing to get into a hard political debate?

I want to have a nice neutral hotel conference room open for all of us, and a brutal debate on the agendas decided by the finest of A.net.

The momma's boys can show up if they want, but they'd better be ready. I'm one liberal who can blast the nuts off anyone. Grab your crotch - I'm biting.

Come on. You can't be so unwilling to debate?  gnasher   gnasher

Well, first of all, the terms that you are talking about ("idiots", "brains") are not quantitative values. If this is going to be a declared winner and loser type thing, I'm not interested. If, however, this is a good-natured, everyone has respect for the other, we can all be friends afterwards kind of exchange of ideals and opinions in a good, non-shouting, reasonable, level-headed debate, then count me in and put me on the conservative team (I think I would fit in there, if not let me know). I'll throw out a couple of nice, central locations to go for, how about DAL (or DFW for those who are Southwest-impaired!) or HOU (IAH)? You've got all the majors there and hubs for AA and CO respectively. February sounds like it would be a good month to shoot for. Anybody else want to jump in?

You did not quote me correctly. (another liberal tactic) To be more precise I said liberals are "dumb" not "stupid". There is a subtle difference.  Smile

As for meeting for a debate (a good natured one over beers and dinner) you may be on to something. I can just see a bunch of us around a large table dishing it out. Unfortunately nothing will come of it so you will just have to trade barbs here and defend yourself.

Ahhh the internet. If only we could touch and see each other.

Nice idea though.

As for dumb liberals, check this out. Funny reading!(for some)

Why don't you all come down to New Orleans, and join in the debate about how to, and according to some, whether or not to, rebuild New Orleans. That should precipitate quite the debate among those of all political ideologies. And you guys wouldn't have to fork over 30 bucks to Gray Line for a tour.

I imagine between C-boy, MSYTristar, and myself, we could host such an event.

Look I don't want to appear like a killjoy, and hey, I'm miles away so this invitation really doesn't apply to me....but if I were in the States, I'm not sure I could think of a worse way to spend my time than to watch an amateur debate between two guys who think they are political masterminds, and that their opinions are important enough for people to come from miles around to watch them belt out an old and tired monologue of crap.

But hey, maybe I'm just hungover and grumpy.

I certainly don't think that highly of myself. Wink I was making a point that people can slam me or anyone else, and I do the same sometimes, but I'm more than willing to meet anyone face to face and have a rational discussion. If we actually do anything remotely like this, it'll probably turn into a beer-drinking discussion laced with the usual A.net insanity. What the hell, there are A.net meets all the time - why not have one in LAS and have a chance to shoot the shit, lose/win some money, and all the other good stuff you can do in LV?

If anyone travelled more than a mile to hear my political opinions, I'd give them the phone number of the psychiatrist down the street. Damn, that must be one helluva hangover, you  grumpy  git.

Hi y'all.

I won't partake in an argument, but I volunteer to help plan and moderate this meet if it is on a day that I can attend. And if someone else really wants to moderate, then I'll gladly be the guy who just sits there while eating wings and drinking beer. Vegas is fine, because I'm sure no one wants to come here to Warner Robins, GA. But if people would rather come to Atlanta, that would be better for me.

There is one week in February that is already booked, but other than that, I am open. The middle of the week is better for me, but I suspect that this meet will happen on a weekend. Guess I will have to do some shift trades for that.

Let me know if there is anything I can do to help.

Let's see if we can get a bunch of people on the same page here. I just did some quick looking, and it looks like airfare (from BOS) + 3 nights at a relatively nice place would be around $900-$1,200 for the weekend Pep suggested (3/10 - 3/13). For example, the following weekend is about $100 cheaper. This was just a quick Travelocity check, so better deals might be had by going through the hotels/airline directly. That's a fairly expensive weekend, plus you've gotta throw a bit of gambling in (are booze and food still cheap like they used to be if you're in the casinos???).

So, let's see if we can agree on a weekend and a place where a bunch of us would like to stay (I'd vote for upscale, but not extravagant).

For the more CONSERVATIVE-minded among us, I can get from MAF-LAS RT for a little over $300 on WN (and I'm sure there will be a sale betWeeN now and then), and stay at the Ho-Jo for a little over 1 bill a night. Gives me more gambling money!!!

I will know if I need to go back to NY again sometime in March/April by the end of the first week of January. Until then I don't want to influence any dates for Vegas beyond what I said earlier about my schedule in Jan/Feb, since March is looking good for most everyone.

So count me in for March, with the proviso that I won't be able to firm up my commitment until early January.

Checking work schedule: 2/17-2/28 and 3/24-3/29 and 5/12-5/25 are good for me . . . anything else is a no go . . . I'm flexible within those dates. And I'll be there if the group selects something withing that window. As my work schedule is pretty restrictive, I obviously defer to those with less restrictive time windows. Please don't consider my availability as a factor . . .

Please don't consider my availability as a factor . . .

Au contraire.......................................................................... Wink

Your attendance is mandatory. I wanna shoot craps with you and drink beer until 5 AM, then get up at 7AM and run throught the streets in my underwear liplocked with a whore with a thumb up my backside screaming; "He's a cop! It's all on the up and up!"

Seriously, Pep, you in LAS has got to be a treat that can only be rivalled by having your nuts ceremoniously ripped off by a passing freight train.

Consider it done.
