Turbo: The Cat That Gives A Handshake

Mon Dec 19, 2005 12:38 pm

Or more precisely, a paw-to-hand shake. Many people who have dogs train them to shake by extending a paw on command. But how many people do you know who have successfully trained a CAT to do the same thing? Especially since cats are much more independant and obstinate.

Well I just used lots of patience, lots of love, simple yet repetitive, and short sessions. Plus a can of kitty yum-yum treats helped.

So I set up the camera and filmed myself doing a handshake with Turbo. Here are some stills from that video. Sorry for the crappy resolution, but the lighting wasn't all that great.

Fess up - you just wanted to be able to brag, "I got my pussy well-trained!" to your friends without Jenn kicking you in the nuts.  Wink

This is Molly, one of our moggies, and although I can't show you proof, if we throw a small rolled up piece of paper she will chase it, pick it up and bring it back to you !
She'll do it for ages til you're fed up of chuckin it round the house ! - mind you we did'nt train her to 'fetch' - very clever cat your Turbo !

Congrats, Matt! You really have his attention, too. Now just make sure he doesn't get fat off all of those treats  Wink

I've trained my cats to be my hand warmers. Ernie on the left, Bert on the right, all I have to do is keep wiggling my fingers underneath to convince them that they're getting scratched.  Big grin

I think he's ready for the midterm elections

Gotta start practicing somewhere

Running as a Democat of course

I don't think so. If I ever ran for anything, it would most likely be independant or Libertarian. Superfly and I are still mulling a CA Governors race.

Wonder what Whippy thinks of that wall....

Would you rather I go back to airing my views on illegal immigration, Socialism, personal responsibility and other fun issues? I could if you like. I only backed away from those discussions to let the forum cool off and let some kind of civility return. But anyone who is ready to go another round, get the thread started.

And by the way, what's wrong with having pets and training them?
