War On Iraq - An A.net Opinion Poll

Wed Dec 21, 2005 10:34 am

Hey all,

I usually stay out of threads on Iraq, although they dominate the boards. Like many of you, I often wish they wouldn't get so out of control, so that more people could express views clearly. I also wonder how many 'moderates' stay about of the debates because they don't want to seem too beholden to one 'side'.

It occurred to me that it would be interesting to have a simple poll among us a.netters to try and get a bigger 'overall' view of where people stand on this. What can I say - polls interest me.

So what I would ask is that, without debate or complaint (in this particular thread), you just answer these very simple two questions. I'll collect the results.

p.s. I'm not doing this to make a point, because I honestly don't know how the poll will turn out. I'm just sincerely curious to see how we Non-Av users will "break down" on this issue. So, please answer these questions, without too much additional comment, and we'll see how it turns out.

Question 1: Are you from or are you a citizen of one of the countries initially involved in the military action in Iraq? (USA, Great Britain, Australia, Poland, others in the coalition). I ask this question because it isn't always clear from the flags in the profiles!

Question 2: What is your assessment of the justification for the military action initiated by the coalition in Iraq? Please choose one of:

a) Completely or mostly justified
b) Overall justified, but somewhat problematic
c) Overall unjustified, although there were some good reasons for the action
d) Completely unjustified
Next flight.... who knows.

2 D. with a caveat: There are good results for the Iraqi people, but those cannot be couched as reasons for the war after the fact.

Let me also add that the primary stated reason for the war (WMDs) did not sound implausible at the time. In 2003, my gut feeling was that Iraq had them stockpiled somewhere.

It was, and is justified....but the problems come from the prewar promises that wmds would be found when the point was that we believed they were there and did not feel that we could take the chance they weren't or would not be used.

ANd I'd like to commend those who point out that their current view is different than their prewar view due to hindsight and current knowledge.

Yes - U.S.A.

D. - Completely unjustified; owing to that the intelligence on WMDs was wrong. I, too, was initially in favor of the invasion, thinking those weapons were there. There may have been some, perhaps trucked to Syria as has long been rumored, But in hindsight, there wasn't sufficient justification to invade, despite Saddam's persistent defiance of the U.N. mandate. It wasn't only Bush, most of the world was also fooled. But Bush, coming off the 9/11 shock, made a bad judgement call and mired the U.S. and coalition nations in a bloody and costly mess. Although it's good Iraqis are free of Hussein, it wasn't our business to do that. Attacking Iraq made sense only on the basis of our own security and it's now clear Saddam wasn't nearly the threat Bush and his allies cracked him up to be. There's far more to worry about from Iran and North Korea and Al Queda's still out there but I think it's fair to say we can't do too much about them with so many resources tied up (and squandered) rebuilding Iraq. Though many cite the terrorist threat in Iraq, those terrorists came in response to the invasion so saying we're there to fight terrorism has a largely hollow ring. The 9/11 analogy used by so many to defend Bush's Iraq policy doesn't pan out because Saddam had no proven links to Al Queda; even Administration reps. now admit to that. Though perhaps carried out with the best of intentions, the U.S.-led invasion was a sad and tragic mistake.

Question 1:

Yes - UK

Question 2:

d) Completely unjustified

Nothing can ever justify taking a country to war. The invasion of Iraq was based on a lie - that there would be WMDs there. Bush was going to save the world.

Four years later, and WMDs haven't been found, but that hasn't stopped Bush from getting a tight grip of Iraq and keeping on shooting. They should have pulled out as soon as they figured there were no WMDs. Okay they got Saddam, but why are we still there now? Don't give me this peacekeeping crap, like we gave a damn when we were bombing the shit out of them?

I completely disagree that Bush's bum-chum Blair has kept the UK in Iraq, even though the majority of us want our troops out. He should listen to his people and get the f**k out of there! All the while we're in Iraq our own people are dying. We've had suicide bombings in the UK for christs sake - what will it take for him to realise it's all bad?

1.) No (why should we have been so stupid?)

2.) definitely D (the only good point is, that Saddam was removed. But the US always had supported dictators all over the world and they had supported Saddam earlier. So, removing a dictator couldn`t have been the truly reason for Bush`s government to attack Iraq! They are liars and they lied mainly to the American people!)

1. Yes (USA)

2. D: We went to war on lies. Remember Bush during the State of the Union speech? Remember Bush and Powell at the UN saying that we (the US) had proof of WMD's in Iraq? And over time the reason we went to war has changed!

I do think some good has come of this war like Sadam not being in power (although he was not a threat to the US) and Iraq elections, but we were basically lied to so Bush can have his war.

a) completely justified.

Under the 1991 armistice documents all UN members have the obligation to enforce the full and unrestricted access to any site in Iraq the arms inspectors want to visit with any means necessary (including but not limited to military force).
From 1995 Iraq has systematically prevented such access, yet it took until 2003 before any UN member took up their treaty obligations.
