Computer/Internet Problem - Can Anyone Help?

Thu Dec 22, 2005 6:09 am

Hi all,

My father bought a new notebook two days ago (Fujitsu/Siemens Amilo M1450G) and he has huge problems with it every second time after he was surfing the net.

The Notebook is running on WinXP and he is using an Acer ISDN 128 Surf Mini USB modem to get online. Every second or third time when he was online and when he is disconnecting, the computer screen turns either blue and a message like "Severe Error" (in German: "Schwerer Ausnahmefehler") appears or the usual Win desktop shows up but you can't do anything anymore, i.e. the mouse doesn't work anymore and you can't switch the notebook off anymore (to switch it off you have to disconnect the battery). When you start Windows again after this, a small pop-up appears which says something like: "Capi Error", so I guess it has something to do with the ISDN connection.

As I already wrote, the error doesn't occur every time when he is disconnecting from the internet but every second or third time. The modem itself doesn't give an error message.

Does anyone know what is going on? I never saw that before on any computer.

Thanks in advance for any help or tips!

Sounds like either a hardware issue, or a modem driver issue.

Any chance you can post the exact error message?

Quoting RichardPrice (Reply 1):

I can post the exact error message tomorrow, my father already switched his notebook off and I am too lazy to switch it on and to connect it to the internet again.

I will try something else tomorrow, I will use the modem that is integrated in the notebook and look if the same error message appears again. If not, I will suggest that my father should use the internal modem, that should be no problem for him because he isn't really surfing the net but he is just downloading his eMails on days when he left the office earlier, a 56K modem should be enough for eMails.

If you get a blue screen of death (the entire screen turns blue with regular sized white text) then you should

#1: Get a new modem (another model or better yet manufacturer) because there might be some sort of driver conflict going on which might be giving you the error, or it may lie in the USB connection.

#2: If that doesn't fix the problem send it back and have them take a look at it.

It sounds like your USB modem and your laptop don't like each other. That would be my guess.

Try looking in the event log. It's located in the control panel under the Administrative Tools. If there is an error, write down the event ID number and go to microsoft.com and search for that ID number in the knowledge base.
If your lucky, it should tell you what to do.
