American Chopper

Thu Dec 22, 2005 7:39 pm

Hey guys, for those of you that know about choppers.

I´m pretty sure the guys in the US knows about American Chopper the TV series.
I was watching it last night, and they had a really old show on, where they made a Santa bike. While making the bike, they were in a really small shop, quite cramped I must say. THen, later the same night, they were doing the Shelby 500 bike, witch they were doing in a bigger shop, and then they moved to a new and really big shop.

Thing is, what´s their story, how did they become so sucessfull, etc etc.

I´ve been on their website, but it doesn´t say much, so, could you experts here enlighten me?

Thx

They got big from the TV show. That led to many more orders for their bikes. The got a lot of great publicity from the 9/11 'Fire bike', built in honor to the NYC Firefighters killed featured in one of the earlier episodes. I believe the father had a metal fabricating shop and liked chopper bikes for many years, then decided to go into making chopper bikes part time, got a good rep, then into full time and it just grew from there. Then they were approached by the Discovery Channel to do a 'reality show' as they had the unique family personality (Mikey is the coolest of them all of the family). I would also note the company is based about 60 miles/100kms north or NYC in Orange County New York State.

They moved into a big, new shop a little over a year ago.

That is absolute trash TV and the whole family is a bunch of losers although they make great bikes. But i couldn't drive one over here cause the German TÜV would puke all over the place and never certify it!

bit of a contradiction no? and please i love the show and all but i really beleive most of the dramatics are just bumped up for the camera... Really and im sure your family is the certified best family in the world..... i think not.

The workshop is about 10 miles from SWF, in a town called Montgomery, NY.

Like all "reality" shows you only see what makes good TV. There are a whole host of other guys working there, that you will never see. In reality the guys in the show don't actually do much work now, it's all filming the show and doing public appearances.

They make some creative bikes, but I would not call them good. Good, to me, means you can ride it all day, on multi-day trips, with a high degree of reliability. If you tried to ride some of those stretched, raked montrosities, you would be just as likely to have a back spasm as have any sort of fun.

yeah, thx for the info guys.
About the family, well, Paul&Paul are pretty much as me and my dad, with me working and him complainting all the time, but it´s a different sotry.

About their bikes, for me it´s much more for showing then it´s for riding. They don´t look confy for a long drive. I love bikes, and their´s are great, with some really nice details and lots of creativity, but just don´t fell good to ride, leg and arm position are too streched, wich get tireing after a short while.

Anyway, thx for the info guys

happy holidays.

The small shop was downstairs and then the larger one was upstairs. That got expanded but they still managed to grow out of it and then moved into Montgomery I think so.

I agree, the customs bike they build are eye-candy not something to drive coast-to-coast with.
Discovery puts it right in their tag-line, "AC the Osbournes of Discovery channel", anyways I like it.

OK, they have really grown.

LAst night they showed the X-mas special part II, when they built a side car like a santa car...and they also buy Mikey a new truck in this show.

Then, on the 2nd part of the show, they aired Shelby´s Bike part II, where everybody has a Hummer H-2....

Guess business are going great for them .... lol

love the show, nothing wrong with a bit of family bonding whilst building some of the best damn bikes i've ever seen...Jush, you ever heard the saying, the family that plays together, stays together! Kristin is a hottie too!

looks like a pretty close family unit to me!

Absoluetly love the show, even if it is fairly obvious that a lot of the Paul Sr vs Paul Jr/Mikey stuff is just added for the show. IMHO, the Santa bike was a nice special treat for the kids, but I think that the Black Widow Bike is the best. Btw, their website is http://www.orangecountychoppers.com/ , which also shows all the bikes made, including several for celebrities.

Way over hyped. If you want to see true crafstman, see Jesse James of West Coast Choppers. Orange County are assemblers. They go buy parts, tank, wheeels, frame, etc put it together and clutter it up with doo-dads. If the doo-dads dont quite fit, they get a big mallet and make them fit. Makes me cringe. Watching Paul ride makes me cringe as well, he clearly spends more time standing next to the bike than riding it.
Jesse James on the other hand is proficient on all facets of bike building. Watching him roll out two tank halves out of a sheet of metal is watching an artist. His bikes are clean and uncluttered. A true rider as well.

In the newer episodes they do have the equipment to make frames, wheels, and exhausts themselves. And that guy Rick makes tanks for the bikes.
