A Good Ending - Bank Saves Me £275

Fri Dec 23, 2005 11:59 pm

While I was a student, I accumulated about £800 of debt on my credit card (I was foolish). I have been repaying between £20 and £50 per month. I am quite an annoying person to deal with because I never accept the crap the debt collecting agency says - like they're going to sue me to recover the money (I write long letters in reply) - and I frequently change the terms of the repayment plan (like how much I repay, when I repay it, etc.). I now owe about £686. Anyway, I got a letter yesterday saying that if I can afford it, I can pay £410.33 within 28 days (which I can easily do) and all will be settled - saving me just under £275. LMAO. Pretty good, eh?   Wink Evidently, being an annoying customer can certainly have good rewards.

But you probably spent the same amount you saved by phoning the credit card company to be an annoying customer. Maybe somebody saw that and took pity on you, let you off since it is the season of good will.

Nope. Never phoned them once. Always insisted on writing (as it slows the process). Always sent letters (at my ex-employer's expense).   In fact, I even used my ex-employer's computer, printer, paper and envelopes, so none of that cost me a penny.   Where there's a will, there's great potential.

Being devious is good.

The outstanding amount stays as a balance for 7 years on your credit history, just marked as 'no further action'. It isnt the godsend everyone thinks it is, as it shows that you do not repay fully, and companies do take notice when doing a credit check.

Been there, done that.

But that's rather unfair: the debt collection agency suggested that I take advantage of their settlement offer with no reference to what you have mentioned. I foresee another ever-so-nice letter.  Wink

Anyway, I won't be getting a house, mortgage, loan, new bank account or whatever else in the next 7 years, so it shouldn't be a problem at all.   Indeed, I am hoping, fingers' crossed, to be living in a different country well before then.

So all this effort and you only got £275? Is that all your time was worth? Pfft.  Wink

Not bad for a maximum of two hours' work.  Wink
