Australia's Richest Man Dies

Tue Dec 27, 2005 8:30 am

Kerry Packer, Australia's richest man, died at his Sydney home overnight. He was 68 years of age. No cause of death announced at this stage. Remarkable man.

:O Oh my god!

Mr. Packer was a man I greatly admired - and while we didn't agree on things politically, in the few instances I've encountered him - he has always been a gentleman and a man of great substance.

I know he's had health problems for a long time - but this is so unexpected.

My condolances go to the Packer family.

that or Australia's most powerful, but you can have him, his network is pretty trashy if you ask me. hopefully James will be a little less of a wanker when it comes to programming.

As for Kerry, well there is only so many times you can cheat death, saw some photos of him and he looked shocking for his age, not unexpected to hear this.

That makes Frank Sartor the richest Aussie doesn't it? He owns Westfield shopping centres. Very sad, this came as a shock to me. Will any articles be released today or will we have to wait until tomorrow? Maybe Nine will have a special tribute to him this week.

Interesting character Kerry Packer....

an absolutely ferocious and fearless gambler. In the past he was reputed to have regularly lost half a million pounds in poker games and not batted an eyelid. Current values would put that into millions.

He hadn't exactly had it easy in recent years with his health. Here's to the guy anyway.

Nah.

It will be covered by the major news agencies - ABC, Murdoch press, Nine, Seven - but don't expect glowing tributes. The Packer's don't want to and don't need to live out their lives in public.

Forbes magazine valued him at US$5bn (4.2bn euros) this year.
The exact cause of his death is not yet clear but he had suffered health problems including a battle with cancer, and had had a kidney transplant.

Don't forget the heart attack that killed him for a couple of minutes. Isn't amazing, an ambulance with a defribulator just happened to be passing by.

I heard on Nine News that his kidney was failing again and he decided there was only so many transplants one could have, he also didn't want to be on dialysis for the rest of his life.

One thing, which alot of people probaly don't know about Kerry Packer is what he did for the game of Cricket. Back in the 70's Packer introduced world series cricket, which was a limited overs format played using coloured uniforms and introduced day night cricket. At first it caused a bit of a stir, but as we have seen the format has been embraced and tweaked into the great series we have around the world now.

I just read an interesting aside to this story, at that time it was quite rare for ambulances in Australia to carry a defibrillator. An ambulance in the area, which was one of the few in the fleet to carry a defibrillator, responded to the call and managed to resuscitate Mr Packer.

After recovering, Mr Packer donated a large sum to the New South Wales Ambulance Service in order to fit all NSW ambulances with a portable defibrillator. The defib then got the nickname "Packer Whacker".
After Monday and Tuesday even the calendar says WTF...
