Final Harry Potter Book!

Thu Dec 29, 2005 1:55 am

J.K. Rowling is finishing up plans for her final book in the Harry Potter story. Book #7 is suppose to be started sometime after the first of the year. The final book is yet untitled.

Anyone else a huge fan?

I predict much of the same - good story, and quality of writing that's decent enough to housetrain a pet on.

Admittedly, the sixth book had some flashes of skill interspersed in the mush, perhaps she's taken a few writing classes.

It's got kids all around the world to read books.

It might not be my cup of tea, but that achievement alone means I'll forgive the Potter books quite a lot.

A very valid point. But it seems a shame to let that good a story go to waste.

I'm not a professional writer. When J.K. Rowling can shoot an ILS down to minimums, then I'll stop commenting about her writing. But until then, I think it's fair to say that any comparion between us is ridiculous.

What a fallacious position.

I cannot paint, sculpt, or draw - but I think the works of Piet Mondrian suck.

I do not play the soprano saxophone, but I think Kenny G sucks.

As consumers, we are all critics. We have to be. Without good, there would be no bad. And after all, Mir is not a multi-million dollar writer, J.K. Rowling is. Why should he be challenged to do better if that's not what he does?

No way will she kill him off. The last book will probably introduce a college for witches or something of the sort opening up a new series of x books. And then he'll graduate from college, etc.

I might be wrong, but if she kills her golden goose then she's crazy.

From what I have read, she intends to never again write anymore novels concerning wizardry or magic. She might go off in an entirely different direction, or simply stop writing and retire early.

It's not as if she needs any more money...

there are all kinds of rumors like that floating around. Harry dies to kill off Voldemort, etc. etc.

it has been stated by Rowling herself that she HAS completed the ending of the series at least. now it's just a matter of her getting the rest of the story finished.

i predict the final book will not be published at LEAST until the very end of 2008 or 2009. i think she'll take her time with this one. and the final book will be the largest advance sale of any book in history.

Well, her film rights wouldn't be worth much then, would they? Can you imagine trying to market that plot line to a zillion children world wide?  Angry

And their releated.... how? Ok so you go write an 800 page novel, win literary awards, make millions of kids read it write five more, make millions on books, movies, other stuffs. Then we'll talk.

I personally really enjoy her books. Their great fo both kids and adults. Her stories have great twists, and suprises you would not expect. I hated B6 for that, but i digress.... But to say their bad, tosh. Go read one, bet id change your opinion.

As for book 7, harry wont die, but some one else will and i dont mean Voldemort, but what do i know. But that rumor that harry dies has been around since book one and i was in 6th grade.

OMG, cant beleive i just wrote all that. Im a nerd, god help me.

They're not related, at all. J.K. Rowling and I have nothing in common, apart from the fact that we live on the same planet and speak the same primary language. Any comparison between us and what we do is pointless. As Logan says, there is no requirement for me to do better in order to say that her writing isn't up to par. If there was, this forum (and others like it) would shut down, because 99% of those who say that the A340 sucks wouldn't be able to design a better plane if their life depended on it; 99% of those who say that Doug Steenland is a horrible CEO who's running NW into the ground would run NW into the ground even faster, etc. I'd venture to guess that society as we know it would collapse if we had to be able to do better than someone else in order to criticize them. I'm not asking her to do the impossible - numerous examples exist to show that it can be done (an excellent one being Phillip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy). I could have chosen to be a writer as a profession. I didn't, but that doesn't mean that I can't offer my opinion of her work. And if I ever fly her around one day, and have a subpar landing, the fact that she's not a pilot herself doesn't mean that she can't poke her head into the cockpit on the way out and comment on it.

Ok, rant over. Admittedly, there was a good deal of hyperbole in my initial comment that shouldn't have been there. Her writing is not awful - it's decent, but it doesn't match the quality of the story. Notice that I've never said that the storylines are bad - they are damn good, and that's what makes them popular. My beef is with the writing. I've read the books, and I'll certainly read the seventh, and I know that she's brought reading back to the children of the sit-in-front-of-the-TV-all-day era, and for that she should be commended. But I'd be lying if I didn't say that while the plots were excellently crafted and engaging, I was constantly frustrated by the quality of the writing not matching up to the quality of the plot.

It seems that my opinion has been misunderstood (which can be attributed to me describing it so badly - remember, I'm not a writer  Smile ). I'm not saying she sucks, I'm saying that she can do better (the two are not the same). In fact, I'm hoping she does do better, because it would make the books much more enjoyable to read.

Other authors have thought the same thing. Agatha Christie fairly early on wrote final books for Poirot and Miss Marple and locked them in a vault to be released after her death.

The woman has sold 300 million copies of only six books. She ranks right up there as a storyteller and maker of myths with J.R.R. Tolkien, Isaac Asimov, and C.S. Lewis, although they all write better than she does.

Personally, I take stock in the Hermoine is gonna get what she deserves theory. She's been making enemies, and it's about time for her hubris to trip her up. I don't think she'll die (I don't think any of the three core characters will die, although Harry would be the likeliest candidate), though.
