Got terribly snowed under at work, on a project I should never have been given, writing a program in a language Id never touched before, covering a feature set I had never investigated. To a deadline that was unrealistic. With no support from my managers apart from 'is it ready yet?'.

In the end, I panicked and thought I could get away with taking an opensource application, removing all copyright and trying to pass it off as my work. I was seriously desperate, young and nieve thinking I either had to produce or be sacked.

I was caught out. They found out what I had done, and while I was severely reprimanded for it, my bosses admitted to me and themselves that I had essentially been given an unworkable task with no support, and nothing serious came from it. The worst thing that happened to me was a 3 month written warning in my file, and the embarresment of working with my colleagues whom I had let down.

But I did learn from the mistake, and I wont ever say that I wish I hadnt done it because of the lessons I gained from it.

But it was one hell of a dumb thing to do.

About 15 years ago, at a friend's bachelor party, we started with a round of golf before the other festivities. Needless to say we were slamming down many cold ones...anyway on the fourth hole I pushed my drive right and down a steep hill. The cart path was to the left, but I said screw it and drove on down the hill after my ball. About halfway down the hill I dumped the cart - completely rolled it, and my friend and I flew out.

After a couple of seconds, we collected ourselves, and then I saw the cart. It had righted itself after rolling, and was making steady progress toward a water hazard that was about 100 yards away from me. Trouble was, the cart was already halfway there. I missed catching up to it by about 20 feet. Somehow all those empties that had managed to stay in the cart as it rolled were now blithely floating across the surface of the water hazard. The cart was about ten feet out from shore, and the top was about two feet under. I stripped down to my tighty-whities and went in after our clubs. The silt was terrible, and I was only able to save a couple of clubs.

Now here comes the club owner, and it's a woman, and I'm there in my wet underwear, drunk, trying to reason with her. God, the humanity. I ended up paying for the cart to be towed out, a new brake cable, and a new set of clubs for my friend. After I had paid the club a couple of weeks later, I got a letter suggesting that it might be best if I "never came back to that club again."

I don't know, maybe misspelling "dumbest" would be pretty ironic.  Smile

That reminds me of a time in highschool when a bunch of us had a friend who worked at a golf course. After the course closed, we'd drink copious amounts of alcohol and get wasted. We'd tie off the governers to the gas powered golf carts and ride around the course at night. We'd jump the carts over sand pits to see who could get the most air. Often times we'd end up flipping the carts. We'd get right back in and keep driving. One night we all had way too much to drink. One of my friends rammed into a metal pole sticking out of the ground. I remember the cart hitting the pole and seeing the cart's back-end fly about 3 feet into the air. We flipped more carts that night than any other night. The owner found out about it the next day and our friend got fired.

You know those small cars used in airports to transport passengers needing assistance? Well, I was driving one of them at 1am in YUL to get to an arrival gate quickly, and I stupidly backed up into a glass frame... shattered the entire thing... Thank God no one was hurt, but the security guards didn't find it funny... and I'm sure I cost my airline lots of $$  banghead

Forgot to remove the jack after changing shock absorbers on my car once. That was pretty dumb. But not as dumb as thinking "Man, these absorbers doesn't work" when I was test driving...

Oh, and I once tried to lift a 64 tone heavy boat with a 56 tonne capacity crane. I got halfway... wideeyed
In my defense, they said the boat weighed in at 61 tones and a crane is supposed to have a 10% over-capacity...

And another dumb thing I've done is to let my friend tow my car to the junkyard. My friend is generally confused, and halfway to the junkyard he forgot that he had me on tow.  yell

so many dumb things to choose from - probably my two 'highlights' of stupidity are the following

1/ several years ago in the middle of winter I went to bed with the flu at about 4 oclock on Sunday afternoon ... I really , really , really did not want to go to work on Monday and was dreading getting up . I woke up , looked at the clock , and saw that it was 7:00 so got up , showered , got dressed and drove to work .. as usual I was the first person there and I did my usual monday morning routing while waiting for the rest of my team to arrive ... after about half an hour and nobody had showed I was starting to feel really grumpy ... if I could make the effort to turn up feeling half dead with the flu then the least they could do was the same .... another half hour went past , I noticed that it seemed to be getting darker , not lighter .... yep , you guessed it - I had not been asleep for 15 hours as I thought , just three .. it was actually still Sunday night .

2/ earlier this year my partner and I went to Gent for the day and had lunch in a very nice restaurant - the old building had been nicely restored and had a very modern and trendy interior . I went to use the toilet - there was a common foyer area between the mens and womens toilets - then there were the cubicles , all with glass doors - transparent - until you closed the door and locked it ( I think you can see where this is going !) so I raced into the cubicle - pulled the door shut , dropped my pants and sat down thinking "wow , this one-way glass is cool , I can see out , but they can't see in" it took me a couple of minutes to work out that in fact they could see in because I hadn't locked the door properly .

When I was a kid I lived near a busy street. I decided to get my large Water Gun (Super Soaker) and shoot water at cars as they drove past. It was funny up until the point that a guy turned around and came back. The rest is history....

By the way I was 7 years old....

Waiting until one of the old cesspools failed before putting in new Title V septic tanks!
Now it may cost me $35K-$40K plus about $5K to hook up to town water due to location of existing well...Ouch!

And pulling a neighbors borrowed trailer with 1100 lbs of brush to stump dump and screwing up tranny in my car...cost=$1700+- as older car couldn't handle it...

Turned 21 and accepted a bet to drink 21 Yukon Jacks and coke in 2 hours and 10 minutes. I lost more than the bet. Took almost 2 days to recover. To this day I can't stand even the smell of that liquor.
Warm winds blowing, heating blue skies, and a road that goes forever, I'm going to Texas!
