The nex "open" days are on Sun 1/15/06 and 2/19/06. If anyone is interested in goin and then up for some spottin, lemme know!

I'll be in Boston that weekend. Perhaps we can make a detour to BDL if it's not a far drive.

I can probably make either date. The museum is very nice for anyone who has not been there. It would be nice if the open the canopy of the newest display, an F-14.

My Dad lives in East Windsor, just minutes from BDL, but I'll be in school. Does the museum allow you to go inside Excambian during an open-cockpit, er, -cabin day? How about the Caravelle outside? It's a regular picture, or I'd post it, but I've got a picture of myself three years old in the cockpit of their B-29 (1987). Must've been an open-cockpit day.

Hey All A.nuts! Lets Meet At BDL! 2/19

Wed Jan 04, 2006 2:22 am

Unfortunately, both Sundays (1/15 & 2/19) don't work for me; I have a prior commitment on the early afternoon of Jan. 15th and I will be away visiting family during President's Day weekend (Feb. 17-20).

If my President's Day travel plans get aborted due to bad weather occurring either that Friday, Saturday, or Monday (which has happened to me twice in the last 5 years); then I might (key word might) be able to head up there. But for now, I wouldn't bank on it.

As I mentioned to Justin/Cadet57 earlier; in general, Saturdays usually work better for me. Does the museum offer the Open Cockpit Days on any Saturdays?

My available Jan./Feb. Saturdays are as follows:

Jan. 7
Jan. 14
Jan. 28 (would have to leave in early afternoon, though)
Feb. 4
Feb. 11
Feb. 25

Keep me posted.

No, unfortunately its SUN only, but they also have on on 3/19 we could bump it til then, if anyone would want to.

Does the museum have the Open Cockpit Days on every 3rd Sunday of each month? What are the museum's hours of operation and the Open Cockpit hours of operation?

While March 19 can work for me (since I will have sufficient notice); don't bump the date by 2 whole months solely on my account. Go by majority consensus; that usually worked in past A.net meets. If I can't attend, I can't attend.

Yep third sun of each month. Museum is open 10-5 mon-sun, but on open days, the planes close at 4 but the musuem at 5. I think we'll keep it in feb, i'll take your advice on that one, as I dont think we should keep changing it on people.

Any thoughts on whether we should spot first, then do the museum? We should probably base this on air traffic - I know at BOS on Sundays, Noon to 3 PM is fairly quiet, but it picks up after that. Maybe we could meet about noon, get some lunch, go to the museum from ~1-3 PM, and then spot ~3-5 PM?

Hey Guys,

I spot at BDL all the time, so I may be able to pop in at the Feb 19th date.. I'll let you know as time goes on. Keep in mind as far as the tentative schedule Logan22L mentioned above, 3-5pm at BDL is tough in February. Sunlight may be pushing 4:30 or 4:45 if you're lucky, but the lighting is tough. Mid- to late- morning is usually good as far as lighting goes. Early afternoon even works. I'd suggest spotting 10-12 or 1-3, and have the museum visit opposite with lunch wedged in from 12-1. Just my  twocents

Absolutely. Non-av is the best place for this thread according to the Mods, and we've had good luck with other meets in non-av.

I thought about the lighting issue; I would suspect that it will be light until at least 5:00 PM by that date, but whatever everyone thinks is best. Personally, I'd like to see as much of the larger traffic as I can, and I'm guessing that 1-3 may not be peak time for that. At least it isn't at BOS. 10:00 AM is pushing things just a bit for those travelling any distance (I hate getting up at 7:00 AM on a weekend  gnasher  Wink, but let's see what people think.

Hey again...

I'll do my best to be there on the 19th. I'll need to be reminded, so hopefully John from Yahoo BDL (hint hint) will remind me on the boards.

Every time I spot, I create a spotting report on my computer, which I keep in a spotting book that I bring with me when spotting. (Yada yada yada...) Anyway, I just created an HTML version of my spotting report from Sunday, October 23, 2005, at BDL. It's the last time I spotted on a Sunday. I'm assuming the lighting conditions then may be similar to February. It just so happened that I was out from 3 - 5:00 pm. So, for a reference to what you can see at that time, take a look at my report: http://tinyurl.com/b9ta8.

If you're interested in more of my reports or other information about BDL, BOS, PWM, or HVN, feel free to visit my blog at http://360.yahoo.com/flytweed or email me at Marcus.Hanscom@gmail.com. Thanks!

-Marcus

Sorry to keep plaguing the board, but a few other notes... I just looked over all of my reports for BDL to confirm, but there really isn't much "larger traffic" at BDL besides the MD-88's that AA and DL fly in there. Until this week, Song had several flights in a day on the 757's, but i'm not sure how DL plans to utilize these a/c after this week. I've also seen a few UA 757's in there from time to time. WN certainly flies its share of 737's in there, as well as US and CO.

In terms of when you'll see more or less "larger traffic," you'll see all of the larger stuff as mentioned above throughout the day. Several DL MD-88's found their way in between 3-4pm on 10/23, and I caught an AA MD-83, another DL MD-88, and a UA 757 after 4pm on Sunday 10/2/05. I'll upload that spotting report shortly as well...

I usually have pretty good luck regardless of the day around 11am - Noon. Keep in mind that the other times mentioned above only pertain to Sunday. Weekday spotting times sometimes vary significantly from weekend flights.

Anyway, I hope this all helps...

It does help, and thanks. I can drive 20 minutes from my house to Castle Island in South Boston and see a greater variety and some heavies, but I'll gladly make the trek to BDL to check out the Sunday cockpit deal at the NE Air Museum (been there twice before, but it is quite enjoyable), and to meet some other A.nutters. Considering it'll probably be cold as crap and I'm not a photographer, I'll concentrate on lunch (beer) and the museum; a bit of spotting would be OK too, but it won't be my focus.

I look forward to it.

You may want to take a look at this thread A.net Meets? to get the general gist of where A.net meets are usually posted.

Actually, the original (long-since archived) BDL meet thread was posted in the Civil-Av. forum. From what I've observed (at least on the related threads) is that people will post meets in the Non-Av. forums for one of (or both) two reasons:

1. To generate a wider reponse/participation.

2. The gatherings may involve more than just spotting and/or aviation-related activites.

So, I suppose that I really should have had my camera on hand, when I saw the pink Song 757 when I was letting the dog out at lunchtime today.  Big grin

Expedia's showing a Song 757 scheduled to arrive from FLL @ 11:34am on the 19th. However, I'll admit that I haven't been paying close enough attention to the reintegration of Song to know what that means for A/C and flight schedules.

(Depending on other commitments, I might walk over for some of the fun.)

I guess the transition with Song doesn't exactly cross Song off the list. Apparently customers can book flights on Song through May according to their website (news.flysong.com). Then, the Song product will be modified into a two-class product for long-haul routes. Initial reports suggested that the Song product would be rolled into DL mainline, but the Song site says otherwise. It is unclear whether Song will remain with the current livery, or if the 757's will be repainted with DL's standard livery but booked under the Song name. Time will tell I suppose, but I guess we'll still have some time to spot Song at BDL...

I've been on their tours a few times with JROTC and Scouts and their ok, i wouldent recomned them as they can be time consuming, and plus its really basic on the aircraft features, and there are no "behind the scenes stuff" the restore shops are closed to the public.
