The best of Scotland, like "Old Lang Syne", belongs to the world; it refuses to be confined to the bleak lands north of the Tweed. It's the rest of Scotland I can do without.

That's a bit harsh isn't it? Can't we just turn all Scots into Solyent Green like in the movie?

I'm expecting Alex Salmond and Sean Connery to be taking out a contract on him after this bit:

6. When it comes to sport - and I do not count the one decent tennis player - Scotland is the Belarus of the West.

7. In fact, when it comes to just about everything, it is the Belarus of the West.

what a load of shite. Thats exactly why we SHOULD be independent, we are a great nation of great history, but thanks to the english they have destroyed our education system and everythign else.

Let us run the country ourselves and return it to its former glory.

As a nation we are cursed with a superiority complex. We really do believe that we are better - not just better than the English; better than everyone.

If you want a serious answer to that, the truth is that the Romans did go into Scotland, but felt that there wasn't anything worthwhile there to justify a campaign of pacification. It wasn't that they couldn't, it was that it wasn't worth the effort.

Without Scottish inventors the world would be without:

-Adhesive postage stamps
- Anaesthetics
- Bank of England
- Buicks
- Pneumatic Tyres
- Decimal Point
- Encyclopedia Britannica
- First cloned mammal
- Golf
- The Kelvin scale of temperature
- Logarithms
- Microwave Ovens
- Penicillin
- Paraffin
- Radar Defense System
- Refrigerators
- The Steam Engine
- The telephone
- Television
- US Navy Founded by John Paul Jones, a Scotsman.

Seems that without Scotland and it's people, the world would be a lot worse off than people give it credit for.

Not bad for a wee Country sitting on top of England Big grin

Not just the BofE but Banking all together was invented by a scot. Also economics was founded by Adam Smith, another scot.

Are you suggesting that without these great Scots, no-one else would ever have discovered/invented these things? Perhaps if it hadn't been for the Scots, we'd all still be living in caves, hunting and gathering? /sarcasm

We would be a few years behind in the tech tree if it wasnt for scotland. For a small nation we had a big impact on the world.

Exactly! Then they built a chuffing great wall to keep the Scots out from the decent parts of the UK (well OK, England).

if you take the "Northern/Nordic countries" you should add Denmark and Iceland, if you mean Scandinavia you have to deduct Finland. Each of the 5/five has a seat in the United Nations.
