What Kind Of Beers Do You Keep?

Mon Jan 02, 2006 4:17 pm

Living in the US, I know it's kind of limited. Not counting Micro-Breweries. We have here in ATL 420, just to mention a few. I only drink liquor on special occasions. Otherwise- Guinness-Harp, Hieniken, LaBatts and Molson. I love Bass Ale draft, but don't have room for a keg. Every day beer is Miller Lite and I mean weekend only. I like wines and collect a few- but don't have the opportuity to drink wine that often. I got a mini-wine cooler last year. What's your favorite or poison?  Big grin

I just about always have some of the aforementioned Sweetwater 420 in the fridge (Or another one of the fine brews from Sweetwater Brewing. Right now I have some 420 along with some Exodus porter sitting in the fridge). If not that, then probably one of the following brews:

Sam Adams (Usually the Boston Lager)
Smithwicks
Newcastle
Bass
Guinness

On occassion, I may pick up a four pack of Boddingtons or Tetleys. When I go to a liquor store with a great beer selection, I'm like a kid in a candy store. I usually end up by a few bottles of various beers in addition to whatever else I'm buying. I lost count on how many different beers I have tried over the last 10 years, but it has to be somewhere between 300-500.

There is some swill beer, but it belongs to the relatives I live with, as does the jug of wine. I'll buy the occassional bottle of wine, don't have any right now, but do have some sake.

I keep the usual budweiser in my fridge. However when I am in the mood for an excellent beer then for sure its Newcastle.

Whenever I go to the UK I only drink Tetleys but I can't find it here in the states. Is Tetley's sold exclusively within a certain region of the UK ?

Most common:

Guinness
Abita Turbo Dog
Sam Adams

Wish we could get XXXX bitter here. Great everyday brew. Unfortunately all they sell here is the lager. WTF, we've got enough lagers, give us something different!

There is Tetleys English Ale which is sold here in a 4 pack of Draught Cans. I'm not sure to what extent they sell it here in the US. I can find it here in Atlanta pretty easily. I would figure that most of the major cities in the US should carry it. I first found it and fell in love with it in Washington D.C. (the liquor store @ Union Station sold it), and found it on tap at an Irish pub in Boston, and when I found it in a liquor store here for the first time, I was in heaven.

SRBMOD,
Thanks for the info. I've been to all the beer distributors here on Staten Island(NYC) and none have it. I'll try a few places in Brooklyn. There has to be someone here who sells it.

I have to admit though drinking Tetleys in an pub n the UK is pretty cool. And tasty.

My dad only likes certain beers. Mainly cream ales like Sleeman or Kilkenny. We do not have beer in the house that often.

None really as I gave up regular drinking. Although of what's on offer for 'general' types of beer, I always used to like to keep a few cans of Miller in.

I'm quite fond of Michelob Ultra as well. Tastes lovely when properly chilled.

It's more of a northern brand, which used to be Tetley Walker. There is an important distinction there.

The stuff west of the Pennines came from Walkers Brewery in Warrington and was foul. The real Tetleys came from Leeds and was completely different. Thankfully Warrington got closed down. I was never a fan of bitter but the Tetleys stuff from Leeds was a very acceptable pint.

Good British bitters are plentiful if you do any travelling here, some can be as bright as a lager (especially ones brewed for southern tastes). Lots of people I know enjoy Flowers when they can get it.

Grolsch, Becks and Stella should be banned as toxic girly water.
Lead me not into temptation, I can find my own way there...

In Germany we call Becks a "womans beer" but it's the only one I really like as I'm not such a big fan of beer, but Becks rules

James Boags, a great Tasmanian beer. Although now that the Christmas/New Years period is over I am going to attempt to wean myself of the 20 per day diet I have been on for the last few weeks.

I'd probably come out of retirement if I could get Ten Penny Old Stock Ale....I drank an ocean of the stuff in Nova Scotia and never got tired of it.

i've got a 24 pack of Coors Original in my fridge right now.

The night before everyone left Iowa City for christmas break, my friend Blake and I went to this undergrad party with Coors original stuffed in our coat pockets...everyone else was drinking shit beer, and we were drinking Coors original. We were definitely the only grad students at that party, and the girls strangely enough gave us quite a bit of attention, haha.

If you're talking about cellaring beers, like you would a red wine, then your best bet is something belgian...a nice trappist ale (Orval, Duvel, St. Sixtus). Doppelbocks age well, too (Spaten Optimator, Paulaner Celebrator or my favorite, Tucher Bajuvator).

I'd avoid trying it with pilseners and lagers. They'll most likely oxidize and leave you with a carefully stored b ottle of cardboard.
