Movie 'In Jokes'

Mon Jan 02, 2006 7:36 pm

One of the things which has fascinated me about cinema is the use of subtle references which have been deliberately worked into a film.

There's a particularly appealing moment in the new 'King Kong' where the film-maker is looking for a lead actress. Someone called 'Fay' is suggested but passed over because she's busy working on 'something for RKO' - the characters are talking about Fay Wray, who would have been working on the original 'King Kong' movie for RKO studios at the time.

And there's a Sylvester Stallone film in which he's offered a Danish pastry but declines by saying, "I hate Danish"...about the time of his split from Danish wife Bridgette Nielsen.  biggrin

Any personal favourites?

From the classic movie The Cannonball Run, JJ McClure (Burt Reynolds) and his partner Victor (Dom DeLuise) are discussing what kind of car they should use for their cross-country race. After coming up with all sorts of vehicles JJ finally says:

"We could use a black Trans Am...nah, that's been done..."  bigthumbsup

The end of The Owl and the Pussycat Ryan O'Neal apologizes to Barbra Steisand and she says: "Love means never having to say you're sorry." which was the signature line from O'Neal's first movie Love Story with Ali McGraw. Ryan O'Neal responds: "That's the dumbest thing I ever heard!"

In "Twins" when Arnold Schwartzenegger come out of the airport terminal when he arrives in America there is a movie poster with Sylvester Stallone (I think it was Rambo). Arnie flexes his muscles and laughs at the macho pose on the poster.
After Monday and Tuesday even the calendar says WTF...

All the door and panel signage on Star Trek are inside jokes. Here's one of them. I'm not kidding and this isn't Photoshopped. Patrick Stewart mentioned it in an interview.

In the "ST:TNG Technical Manual" there are tons of mentions of these in-jokes, such as the dedication plaque on the wall of the bridge of one of the Federation ships that reads:

"...a three hour tour, a three hour tour..."

I'll vouch for this. Being a Trek Fan, I can show you the one and only place there's a toilet on a Galaxy Class ship!  rotfl

Hint: You can find it by looking at the Cut-Away of the ship on the Main Engineering Panel . . . in - where else- Engineering.

The movie "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back" has a ton of inside jokes:

Tricia Jones: [on "Bluntman and Chronic: The Movie"] Well! That was just another paean to male adolescence and it's refusal to grow up.
Alyssa Jones: Yeah, sis. But it was better than "Mallrats". At least Holden had the good sense to leave his name off of it.
Tricia Jones: Why didn't Miramax option his other comic instead. You know, the one about you and him and your "relationship"?
Alyssa Jones: Oh, "Chasing Amy"? That would never work as a movie.

[Cock-Knocker (played by Mark Hamill) has gotten his hand chopped off]
Cock-Knocker: Not again.

Jay: Hey, wait a second! Aren't you the guy who fucked the pie!
Jason Biggs: You see! It's never "Hey! You're that guy from Loser" or "Hey you rocked in Boys and Girls." No, it always comes back to that fucking pie! I'm HAUNTED by it!
James Van Der Beek: You put your dick in a pie!

Jay: Miramax? I thought they only did classy pictures, like "The Piano" and "The Crying Game".
Brodie: Yeah, but then they made "She's All That" and it went downhill from there.

Matt Damon: Just take it from "It's a good course."
Ben Affleck: Oh, now you're the director.
Matt Damon: Hey shove it, Bounce-boy. Let's remember who talked who into doing this shit in the first place. Talking me into Dogma was one thing, but this...
Ben Affleck: Hey look, I'm sorry I dragged you away from whatever-gay-serial-killers-who-ride-horses-and-like-to-play-golf-touchy-feely-picture you're supposed to be doing this week.
Matt Damon: I take it you haven't seen Forces of Nature?
Ben Affleck: You're like a child. What've I been telling you? You gotta do the safe picture. Then you can do the art picture. But then sometimes you gotta do the payback picture because your friend says you owe him.
[They both take a beat and look at the camera]
Ben Affleck: And sometimes, you have to go back to the well.
Matt Damon: And sometimes, you do Reindeer Games.
Ben Affleck: See, that's just mean.
