"Political Correctness Is Damaging Britain"

Tue Jan 03, 2006 8:51 pm

PC is damaging Britain and turning the country into a nation of victims, according to the author of a new anti-PC book. I'm sure this applies to all countries where this is getting out of hand (thankfully not here yet). Anthony Browne says that PC has become a form of "soft totalitarianism" which has led to "moral cowardice" and "intellectual dishonesty".

In addition the social policy think-tank Civitas has said that PC is threatening UK society and has created "Muslim Ghettos" that have produced young terrorists.

There do seem to be people who have too little to do apart from think up ways not to offend people, viz Christmas/Winter festival so non christians won't be offended.

A neighbour of my parents is an education assessor for people who, frankly, are little above the status of vegetables, but they can have "education". She gets frustrated because she can see people with a certain disability and the next time the disability has a new name, so it's less offensive or whatever. When she uses the old name she gets leapt on by the right-on pc nazis.

Sticks and stones. Yeah.

Political correctness is the lesser of two evils. I would rather offend someone and have a better chance at averting a potential probelm than be too afraid to and have some sort of tragedy result.

That being said, I do believe that random searches are needed in addition to profiling. If we just search Muslim males at security checkpoints then we risk danger due to domestic terrorists, not to mention the fact that many fanatical terrorists don't fit the profile that we have all come to know.

Of course, this is just one facet of political correctness. There are others, such as the whole Christmas/Holiday issue, but my main issue lies with our (western societies) reluctance to profile.

Too right it is destroying the UK.

If I went to any far eastern country I wouldn't expect them to start changing the name of the major religious festivals just because I might feel offended. I'm open minded enough to accept that they celebrate these festivals, and don't get all offended by it. So why our government and councils feel the need to placate people who may feel offended is beyond me. It infuriates me!

What major religious festivals have had their names changed in Britain?

Church leaders have clashed with a council over its decision to call Christmas festivities Winterval.

Birmingham City Council used the phrase to describe its programme of festive family events over Christmas and the New Year.

The change is being made because city council officials hope to create a more multi-cultural atmosphere in keeping with the city's mix of ethnic groups.

Thanks for pointing that out.

Its rather absurd, I say. Bordering on foolishness and guaranteed to offend everyone. I can understand trying to bring other religious groups into the mix, but they can easily partake of the Christmas festivities without necessarily adopting the religious nature of December 25th.

PC means you're so afraid of offending him that you'll never even address him/her/it and so cannot avert the tragedy that is sure to befall you if you don't address him/her/it.

I agree , I think one can celebrate 25 December without having to follow pagan rites , in fact I suspect that for most revellers the only connection now between the date and it's original significance is the enormous amount of feasting that still goes on much as it did in pagan times . I dont think many people really still associate it with the old religions , do they ?

That's complete BS. Trying to be sensitive to other people has nothing to do with averting tragedy.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: PC has certainly had its excesses, but it has done ten times as much good as it has done harm. The basic premise that people in groups who are traditionally ignored or discriminated against also deserve consideration, is sound. It IS a shame when it is taken to ridiculous levels to pre-empt offending people who aren't even offended in the first place. But those stories, so popular on Fox and in the UK tabloids, are the minority of cases.

This period of backlash will pass too--I believe. Some of the things Bill O'Reilly and his conservative ilk object to today will one day seem commonsense. Remember that forty years ago two thirds of Americans thought interracial marriage was a travesty to the status quo...

It is only a shame when the right uses the backlash against PC to attack the idea of multi-culturalism as a broader phenomenon, because this is one of the greatest achievements of anglophone nations in the last couple of generations, I think.
