Problems With My G String

Sun Jan 08, 2006 4:18 am

In my fifteen years of playing guitar, I've never been able to tune the G string in a satisfactory manner. I've been told it's mathematically impossible to get the g in perfect tune with the other strings, and I try to get it close, but on my Rickenbacker the G off-tune stands out like a dead nun in a snowbank. Do any other guitarists have tips for dealing wuth the G?

I assume you are stretching the string a bit after installation. Tune it up-SLOWLY-to a G#,then back off to about F#,then back up to G.

Some strings are "stretchy" - the Martin "bronzed" strings are a good example-while others have a harder composition.

Mark, the truth of the matter is that the B string is actually the culprit. Due to the nature of 4ths tuning of the EADG strings, the major third interval to the B string puts things out of what. Better guitars (of which I would have expected Rickenbacker to be) sometimes account for this in the design camber of the neck. Some possible solutions:

1. Use heavier gauge strings,

2. Raise your action

3. Tune in such a way as to exploit your fingering style. Avoid voicing chords with an open B. You'll never be able to get a properly intonated G Maj chord and a properly intonated E Maj chord unless you finger the D instead of the open B as part of your G Maj chord.

I know this issue sucks - part of the reason I switched mainly to bass.

hahahaha. Only someone familiar with the guitar could truly grasp the double meaning of that statement.

Seriously though, I have more problems with the B as opposed to the G. Whenever I tune my guitar, the B is always a lot more fucked up then the rest of them.

It shouldn't really lay across the nut, it should be "cupped".

if it does lay across the nut you should move up to a heavier gauge g-string. May i suggest denim?

I know what you mean, planespotting. The B is annoying, even when playing. It took me forever to make shifting up a half step on the b an automatic action.

Actually, let me re-phrase what I said earlier. If you lower the action at the nut (have a pro file down the slots, or risk it yourself), and raise it at the bridge, this may help the problem.

Quite the double-entendre wasn't it? Believe it or not, it wasn't on purpose.

Back on topic, keep in mind I'm a bass player, and the action on my upright is about 1 cm at the octave.

Your G string problem is probably due to uneven nut.

(ooo-err missus!)

Take it to a luthier and get the nut checked out, some Ricks came out of the factory with uneven depth on the nut. It can make a difference as the string then sits on a slant rather than running true.

if you look in the newsgroup alt.guitar.rickenbacker there have been a few threads about it and some guys even posted their fixes, including making new ones. But if you aren't brave enough get it checked.

Back when I was playing cello, the G string was a pain in the ass. I'd be trying to play on it, and I'd end up hitting the open C string with the bow as well, and it would just sound like crap.

Oh, and for the record, "Air on the G String" is perhaps the most boring piece of music I've ever heard, especially when done at half speed.

I wouldnt play with it yourself. I would take it into a professional and have them adjust it for you. If you adjust it even in the slightest way the neck could snap or bend into a really strange angle.

Is tuning the guitar by piano a good idea? I usually do it that way, the best I can considering my hearing impairment. Would that help the G string (assuming the piano is in tune)?

That's a reasonably well-made string,so the problem should be elsewhere. Does your guitar have a compensated bridge ? (If so, it could be slightly out of adjustment.)

By the way, when you say "11s", I assume the gauging is 011-014-022 -030-039- 049 (give or take) ; with your G string being wound.

There might be a bridge issue. I'm going to take it to a guitar repair guy.

Maybe I'll switch back to D'addario strings. I like the colored ball-ends.
