If Alcohol Had Just Been Invented... Banned?

Sun Jan 08, 2006 8:01 pm

If alcohol had just been invented, do you think that its consumption would be prohibited? It can be, after all, a very serious mind-altering drug with numerous potentially very dangerous and tragic consequences. I suspect that it could be, in extreme cases, worse than almost all other drugs.

without a doubt it would be illegal , fortunately for those of us who do like a drop or two governments get so much revenue from alcohol that they will never do it now

Indeed! The revenue generation idea gives it a nice spin...

I dunno , they said the Irish would never allow non-smoking pubs to happen and it did , maybe they will go to no-alcohol pubs as well - the ultimate Irish joke  Wink

Cigarettes would certainly be banned as Tobacco is a class A narcotic. Just the government would never do this as they would loose too much money from tax.

They should seriously look into legalising some other drugs though. They will never be able to stop people taking them, so may as well get some tax revenue from the sale of them and also would improve the quality of what is on sale.

Thing that amazes me is that hundreds of thousands die each year from cigarettes and alchohol related problems, but death from drugs is in the low hundreds, and yet the ones that kill more people are legal.

The issue with that logic is that tobacco is not a drug that modifies behaviour. Alcohol modifies behaviour, but only in fairly large quantities. It is possible to drink without getting drunk. The PURPOSE of drinking or smoking is not to alter your perception of reality (unless you are in college  Smile.

On the other hand, drugs from pot to heroin are intended to alter your perception of reality. You can't smoke a joint without it effecting how you drive your car. Coke definately changes your behaviour, etc.

They are not talking about banning it now....wht the originel poster was saying what if it was just invented now...NO one would have a history with it .....no lost revenue.....so yeah i think it would be banned like drugs...

Does not alter reality....????What about all the dumb things guys do when drunk.....And as for women look at all the hot women going home with ugly guys cause they are to drunk to see what scuds they really are...  wink

There are only two offenses.

1. Being broke is a misdemeanor.
2. Failure to get Government permission is a felony.

The consequences of violating either one are minimal so long as you are not guilty of violating the other.

Violate them both and you will do hard time!

If, as the Surgeon General (the US Government's health EXPERT) says, cigarettes cause cancer, then cigarettes are an etiologic agent, arguably a weapon of mass destruction and the dissemination of cigarettes is a terrorist act.

Similar arguments could be made against my personal drugs, varietal wines and strong coffees.

The really interesting corkscrew logic is that the Government will not legalize (and TAX) marijuana because it might be construed as the Government endorsing the product. Well, okay then how does that logic apply to the carcinogens in cigarettes?

Recently, many new recreational drugs have been legal to make and use until enough people die to bring it to the limelight. GHB is a good example.

Ten years ago, I used to buy DIY kits for making GHB from Canada. They came via Canada Post and US Postal Service and the customs declaration labels clearly stated what they were. And, of course, they were stamped "OK" or "passed" by US Customs.

Then people started dying and women started to get raped. In the blink of an eye, GHB was a Schedule I narcotic.

Without a doubt, alcohol and tobacco would be somewhere on the Controlled Substances Act list if they weren't grandfathered in due to popularity and social acceptance. Who knows where they'll be in twenty years. Maybe they'll be illegal.

Great question. Have often wondered myself  Smile

It would probably be, unless we were able to overlook the addictive consequences. Facts are that many drink alcohol now and then, but aren't addicted, and the volume is harmless, so their health is not threatened. Among smokers, a much higher percentage are affected somehow in terms of health, due to the amount of the drug used.

Scary to imagine that you can only buy alcohol on the black market. Kind of imagining that you are an American youngster  wink

Well, the Irish housewives somehow figured out how to get the pubs closed at 11pm. What do you think their next move will be? Big grin

But you don't have to get drunk. It is perfectly possible to have one or two glasses of wine or beer without getting trashed.

If you smoke a joint, however, you WILL be noticably affected. Anyone who says they are not affected is smoking more than just occasionally.

hmmm,
If Alcohol was illegal, there would be a lot less people on this planet  Smile)

Less attendance at Church. I mean cmon, that whole water to wine thing by Jesus was a pretty good converter for a lot of people.

Less people alive due to the medicinal use of alcohol as an anasthetic and as a wound cleanser.

Without Alcohol, the world would still be in the dark ages.
