Sandwiches: Your Favourite Fillings

Mon Jan 09, 2006 8:57 pm

What's your favourite filling for sandwiches if they're homemade and bought? For me, I love a nice well-packed salad sandwich at home - full of smoked ham, cheese, tomato, cucumber and lettuce. If I buy one, I'm likely to go for a curry-type one. I don't like butter - or at least only when melted on toast - so I don't put butter or anything like that in my homemade sandwiches. I also don't like mayo (or at least very little of it), so I try to get sandwiches without it.

A man after my heart... first Five Brothers Burgers, now Chicago style Italian Beef. When I was living in Tucson there was a good Chicago style grease-pit called Luke's. Vienna beef dogs, burgers, and Italian beef. And yes, I will say it first, a Chicago style Italian beef sandwich is FAR FAR FAR superior to a Philly Cheesesteak.

A big fave in my family is a good corned beef sandwich. And despite how simple corned beef seems very few places get it right. When I was in Phoenix over the holidays my brother and I made it a point to go to Chompies to get our corned beef fix.

And you can never go wrong with a BLT or a grilled cheese and bacon.

Bacon, ham, turkey, lettuce, tomato, onions, & mayo - all on toasted wheat, white, or rye. Delicious!!

Prefer a toasted roast beef and cheese when purchasing one.

Making one is usually out of leftovers: turkey and ketchup; meatloaf; many different types of chicken. All of them are good  Smile

I like pastrami, club, and roast beef sandwiches, either store-bought (including deli) or made at home. But I'm not finicky, and I like pretty much all standard sandwiches. Realistically, I usually make ham and cheese sandwiches at home because they're easy to make.

I've recently discovered the joy of crumpets. Although the package says "English style" they're made in Canada. I like them with a filling of smoked salmon, tomato, 'cress, a little red onion, and dill mayonnaise.
If it pisses off the right, I'm all for it.

A few years back Asda used to do a Tuna mayo with crunchy veg in a french stick and that was THE best out there. Sadly, they scrapped it and now do some other rubbish instead  Sad.

Yes they do, just like Hawai'ians and Poi  vomit

As for me, I love any sandwich that is absolutely filled with vegetables and has some sort of lean protein in it. This is why I like places like Subway so much, I get so many vegetables, it is hard to close my sandwich. I have been really big on grilled chicken breast and hummus (with lots of vegetables) on wheat pita from the Pita Factory on Hespeler Road in Cambridge, ON whenever I visit my girlfriend up there. Also, like Fred said, it is hard to beat a good grilled shrimp po' boy, fully dressed, minus the mayo (I agree with James here, that stuff is horrid)
