Do You Like Howard Stern?

Tue Jan 10, 2006 6:49 am

I don't get it, I just find him vulgar.

I don't think it's an age thing, as I know a lot of people my age who think he's great.

Maybe it's a straight guy thing?

Yeah, he's pretty funny, and used to be good for a few laughs on the way to school. Too bad I'm not able to listen to him anymore. Did anything he say ever offend me? Sure, but that is when I just start listening to something else.

I found him vaguely amusing while he was broadcast here in Toronto...but the 10 minutes of broadcast then followed by 20 minutes of commercial ads turned me away.

Maybe now that he's in outer space, the quantity of advertisements may have reduced.

I do know for a fact that there will be a response from Lnglive1011yyz very, very shortly!!

He's a vulgar asshole who makes fun of retarded people. I find no humor in his shtick...it was midly amusing a loooong time ago and only in small doses.

But if you think your idea of "hearing about" big titted women makes for good radio, more power to ya.

I enjoyed him for about a month as a teenager. Howard Stern is like any other controversial media talking head the likes of O'Reilly and Franken. There is always another choice for one to listen to or watch, not paying attention to them is the best way to get rid of them.

I think there is something wrong with the way he acts. If I am correct,I think
he is 50 now and has a 20 year old daughter. I wonder if he would like it
if people treated his daughter like he treats women. I am no looker but
he might be the most unattractive man on TV or radio. He needs to grow up.

No ads on his show on Sirius at all.

This morning was the first time for me to hear him live. Before he switched to Sirius, I only had his t.v. shows as a point of reference. His show never made it to the Atlanta market (was long rumored though).

Is his show vulgar? Yes
Is his show childish? Yes
Is his show funny? Depends on what you find funny.

I listened to a good chunk of his show this morning (missed the first hour or so due to forgetting he started on Sirius today), and will probably find myself listening to him every morning (and if I miss anything, I can catch the West Coast reply on the other Howard channel).

I find his sthick very immature and not funny. I feel he insults women, the handicapped and others. Now without the need to filter his language, he will get worse and will even turn his hard core audience off after a while. I would rather hear some good Rock music than some blatering fool.

He said this morning that even though he can get away with now, he's going to try not to use obscenities on the air. A few slipped out, but I doubt he'll do nothing worse that let out the occassional F-bomb and the various names for female genitalia. He even played the radio edit of Eminem's "Lose It".

Just read in the paper that the show will have some ads, just not to the extend that his old show had them. They said that his old show had about 18 minutes of ads per hour, while the new one will have about 6. Only the first show today would be ad-less.

I have a 30 minute bit of Howard Stern and Andrew "Dice" Clay arguing on the radio (Howard kicked his a*# - figuratively speaking of course)

Howard Stern is paid to be a shock jock, so he's going push the envelope to deliver what he's paid to do. I used to find him funny, when his show was farting, porn and vulger references. It was funny, but then he went all political, and the censors went crazy with his show. The past year really dove to boredom with the fact they just basically talked about "how great it'll be when they go Sirius", and really went away from what made the show funny. I had bootleg copies of his specials Crucified By the FCC, Butt Bongo Fiesta, and US Open Sores. They were funny then, but I would pay to subscriber radio to hear that stuff. Not worth it to me.

i have a buddy who went out and bought the whole satellite radio setup for home and car...........just to be able to listen to him. wow....unreal.

If my memory serves me right. Years ago there was a big push to censor music lyrics. And, again if my menory serves me right, the person spearheading the action was Tipper Gore a.k.a. Mrs. Al Gore.
Personally I feel that there are more people on the left who want to see Howard Stern silenced than those on the right. I think the attack is coming from the left with the help of the media

As far as howard goes I have listened to his show since he started here in NYC on AM radio. And he has never said anything that I found to be repulsive. He may be the king of all media but I feel that he is a media god on the same level as Rush Limbaugh, Bob Grant and Michael Savage.

I met the asshole at a NABET convention in LA at the Biltmore Hotel in 1978. I attended a "Listening Party" for an up and coming group called "The Fixx". The F'n guy wouldn't shut up, was loud, told a CBS records A&R guy that he wouldn't play the record because the food was shitty and he didn't get enough "blow". I could go on and on. He makes Rick Dees look like a gentleman (Dees is another major radio sphincter). I don't understand how assholes like Stern can succeed.

Well, I'm going to don the asbestos suit and admit I enjoyed listening to Howard during the morning commute.

Did I think everything was funny? No. Was he in bad taste? Frequently. (Calling Air Florida after the 737 crashed into the Potomac to ask what was a one way fare from DCA to the 14th street bridge was one example. But it WAS funny.) But the prank phone calls (like the one to Peter Jennings during the OJ standoff) were priceless, and he has a keen ability to puncture the pomposity that is rampant among US entertainment elites. And when he wasn't on a topic I found amusing, I simply turned him off. All in all, he was a hell of a lot more interesting than 99% of the crap on US commercial radio, and I'll miss being able to break the monotony of a crappy DC commute.

Unfortunately, he picked Sirius, and I'm an XM subscriber.

And Westy, he's apparently got George Takai as his announcer, so I suspect he's going to be an equal opportunity insulter....  Wink

He reminds me of the Jerry Springer. It was funny for a while watching trashy people go at it cause it was new, but it got old real quick. I have nothing against Stern though. He is s smart man and is good at giving the majority of people what they want to hear (vulgar or not)...

I really think he's a jerk and wouldn't listen to him for free, let alone subscribe to Sirius for the ability.

Others, of course, disagree with me...if the information published in the Feb, 2006 issue of Car And Driver magazine is accurate, he receives US $384,615.00 salary PER SHOW, or, in their estimation, the healthy neighborhood of $100,000,000.00/year. I find it hard to believe. Regards...jack

This is correct - 6 commercials an hour versus the too-long commercials of the past. And, if I'm correct, I do not believe they will actually break for all of them.. most of them will be read/performed by Howard and the gang in between bits, and then they'll end up taking occasional breaks to play music when washroom breaks are needed.
I believe MOST of the ads will be for Sirius as well, if not all of them.

No matter where you stand, everyone agrees that Stern is dirty, raunchy, and extremely controversial. The fact of the matter is that this man had (when he was on terrestrial radio) over 16 million listeners DAILY. You don't gain 16 million daily listeners by doing nothing. The man is a genious when it comes to radio and what people want to hear.

Most people who hate him listen to him to find out what he'll say next, and most people who are fans of him (such as myself) just would rather listen to something I can laught at, or even just groan along with most of the 'haters' when he does something *really* outrageous, instead of listening to the same music that's played over and over and over and over and over.

I respect everyones opinion about him, and would never fault anyone for not wanting to listen to him, and only wish for the same respect back from the naysayers.

Genius?

Genius would be the old time radio shows, that really brought things to life. Stern essentially has a stage show, an ensemble cast of people usually talking at the sme time, or doing things that are VISUALLY oriented, but with an audio microphone. Half the stuff he does doesn't even translate to radio whatsoever. Genius is knowing your audience...if pandering to the least common denominator in society, and from a production standpoint doing it poorly, is your idea of genius, I'd respectfully tell you you're way off base.

And yes, 16 million CAN be wrong....

I have listened to him for over 10 years and now I listen on Sirius. He is by far the best radio show out there and now that he has Bubba the Love Sponge on in the afternoon it amounts to some of the greatest radio ever.

Yes he is vulgar etc. but that is really only a small part of the show. He talks about stuff that whether you will admit it or not you want to hear.

No, he goes on and on about how he invented everything. Goes on and on about how people steal bits from him. From what I understand on his first show alone, he ripped off bits done by others months and months ago. He is also a cheap bastard. Why does the horse tooth jackass have to do shit on the side? Because HooHoo does not pay them shit. He also has all those skank whores on his show, and what does he do when his daughter strips naked on stage? He pulls her out immediately. Eventually Sirius is going to go bankrupt having to pay his bloated salary, or go back to 45 minutes of commercials per hour.

If you were intelligent enough to actually know about the issue, you would know he HAD nothing to do with her leaving the play she was in. SHE left the play on her own because the producer/director whatever lied to her and was using her images in ways he told he he wouldn't.

Jack Diamond? You have GOT to be kidding! I'd rather stick needles under my fingernails than to listen to that boring pompous ass......

Nothing better than screaming up the HOV lanes with Diamond blaring on the radio!

I've even called in a few times . . . .

Does this mean I don't get to be on your RU list anymore

I would never let a little thing like a momentary lapse of judgment affect that!  biggrin

On a side note, since Virginia seems content with letting more and more hybrids in the HOV with only the driver, the utility of those lanes is fast eroding, as they are becoming just as clogged as the main lanes.....

Funny, Sirius has tripled its members since announcing Stern. Hmmmmm.

Stern and Sirius will be the first to admit, it's not cause Howard Stern all the sudden jumped ship from FM, to XM. (Stern had 12 million listeners on FM, where are the other 9 million?)

The reason for the increase, people are just tired of the FM/AM bullshit. I can't stand the radio in my car...all the silly morning shows, the stupid callers, the lack of selection of music, the advertising...kill me now.

I bought a Sirius membership, and may or may not listen to Stern's show, but I get a million more options to listen to, commercial free. I absolutely love it and recommend satellite radio to all.  Smile

Just read in the paper that the show will have some ads, just not to the extend that his old show had them. They said that his old show had about 18 minutes of ads per hour, while the new one will have about 6. Only the first show today would be ad-less.

The way he made it sound Monday was no ads period, but he did mention today that they were going to have a total of six ad breaks during the show. The whole thing with the ads got totally FUBARed today by Fred.......

And the cussing thing is pretty out of the picture due in part to Bubba The Love Sponge........

The only thing remeber Howard Stern for was talking about circumcision and how sex is better after the cut .He downsized Luke Perry for not being circumcised

Here is an extract taken from a Howard Stern website

Howard and his female co-host were discussing a photo book which was recently issued, and banned from some states. Howard and his co-host noted, that all of the children in the book appear as young teens, or younger, and they made a point of noting that all of the boys were uncircumcised. To this, they both kept noting through the segment that none were circumcised. Neither host were in favor of the uncut penis and couldn't seem to fathom that these boys still had their foreskins.

Howard Stern et all continued their condemnation of foreskin when they talked with Luke Perry (from TV's Beverly Hills, 90210) on May 7, 1998. Luke's a regular caller to the show, but had not before let everyone know he was not circumcised yet. They ask Luke where he grew up and he states in Ohio.

Howard: So, are you circumcised?

Luke: In the farm… uhh… hold on a second

Robin: They do circumcise people in Ohio, don't they?

Howard: So are you circumcised, Luke?

Luke: Uh…No, I'm not.

Howard & Robin: (unison, surprised) You're not?

Howard: He's not… he's not circumcised. I'm telling ya... Oh my goodness..liste nall. Luke Perry is not circumcised !

Luke: No I'm not.

Howard: Yeah. Do girls get scared of it when they see it?

Luke: No

Howard: They don't?

Luke: You know what the trick is? Have them bring a friend along. If they get afraid, then there's someone they can grab onto. (Trying to change the subject to size)

Howard: Are you sorry that you weren't circumcised?

Luke: Never had any complaints (misunderstood question)

Howard: Did you ever have any problems with it, like it hurt or got infected? (laughing)

Luke: I'm good, no. I have troble fitting it into tight pants, but that's it. (trying to change subject to size)

Conversation continues for some time, with Howard asking things like "does it get infected" "wouldn't you rather have 'convertible', how wife reacted, was she freaked out, did he 'warn' her first, sound effects of women screaming. Luke indicated he felt it was "very hippyish, very European" to have a foreskin and also stated that "so is not shaving your armpits if you're a woman, and that's no good." Luke also mentioned that his "business penis" (erect) looks about the same as a circumcised penis, so his wife really didn't notice on their first time together. Luke was born and raised in Ohio, as was the CIRCLIST founder/editor. Don't they circumcised boys in Ohio? Seems like a valid question! : ) Since Luke doesn't think being "very hippyish" is very good, perhaps he is considering the dance with Mr. Gomco!

Most of you guys have your panties in tied in a knot. Sure, he's can be really obnocious and I switch stations. But, at times he has me rolling in my car seat so, I stay tuned for a good laugh. Is he a jerk? Probably but, every once in a while some good ol' sophomoric humor makes my day.

So, 2 million subs in a year and a half? Using Sirius's numbers, they still only have half as many as the competition. The compitition also added almost as many subs, as Sirius has total subs in 2005. They may get more of an increase of subs during 2005 Q4/ 2006 Q1 due to the Howard factor, but in the end, they are not the better company. Their stock price (currently $6.24) went up after the announcement, but has settled to around the current low price, where it has been for quite some time.
Sirius also counts unsold Sirius equipped cars on the dealer lot as subscriptions - http://www.thestreet.com/pf/tech/scottmoritz/10246148.html

Then again, ignorance laced hate is hard to argue.

Yeah I guess you're right. Some unfunny things are easy to not like. Stern has admitted to doing sub par radio, the only difference now, is that they use a few more words they were not allowed to use on commercial radio.

Why does he have Bubba on his channel, he has said before that he does not want to be in the same industry/room as Bubba.

Well in some parts of the country right now, it is practically impossible to find any Sirius receivers in any of the retailers that sells them. Even most of the online retailers are out of receivers as well. There is such a backlog of folks needing to get their receivers activated, that at one point the other day, the wait was 3+ days. Sirius honestly did not expect the rush of new subscribers to be as big as it were.

I've had Sirius for four months now, and Stern going to Sirius was probably lower down the list of why I went with Sirius. At first, I said I would listen to a little bit of the show the first few days just to get a feel for it. Needless to say, by the end of the first show, I got hooked. We never had his show in Atlanta, so most of this is a totally new thing, as the E! show was not really indicative of how he is.

Yes Howard admits that the last number of years he was on regular radio he wasn't that good. This also coincides with the FCC fines and the ever increasing pressure put on the show and the stations that carried it. He originally had intended to walk away from broadcasting completely when his Infinity contract was up. Sirius coming to the plate and offering him what they did keeps him on the air at least another 5 years (I have a feeling he'll probably reup the deal for another few years as well.).

There are some that have excelled in radio using those same rules. Using that excuse is ridiculous.

If howard invented everything, why didn't he invent better rules?
