How Illegal Is It To Rip Coded DVDs

Tue Jan 10, 2006 10:12 am

I have the 40 Year Old Virgin DVD and I was going to burn a copy of it. However, I went to use the program I have to burn DVDs and It said that the DVD is CSS encrypted and the program could not do it.

So...how illegal is the DeCSS thing? I'm guessing that it is, I'm just not sure how illegal it is. Basically I was going to burn a copy to keep at my girlfriend's house and mine in case the Feds are wondering...lol.

So, is it like they're lurking watching people download this illegal, or more like "file sharing"  Wink illegal?

Or you could buy another copy and have a clear conscience.

Or you could make a copy, i'm those Hollywood people have made enough money from this flick?

But you're making a copy to give to your g/f, so it's illegal.(didn't read the whole thing the first time around  Yeah sure ) Personal copys are legal, though

Generally speaking its about as illegal as ripping non-encoded DVD's. In the end, you're doing the same thing, the MFR has just made it harder to do so.
And all at once the crowd begins to sing: Sometimes the hardest thing and the right thing are the same

What does "How Illegal?" mean, anyway? It's absolutely illegal, and that's really all there is to it. Is there any such thing as "a little bit illegal"?

Whether you'll get caught, get a big fine, etc., is another matter, and probably depends a fair bit on your jurisdiction.

JL

p.s. It seems to me that you also know, deep down, that it's wrong - but that part of you is hoping to get vindication from other here, saying they do it all the time. That's just my opinion, of course.

So your criterion about whether you should do something is whether you'll get caught? This is troubling.

Did you ever go on one of the newsgroups or torrent sites? Tons of stuff to download. From whole books on how to beat the taxman to the latest software, movies, games and music. Not to mention the guys that have hooked up their satellite-dishes to their computers and can plug into about every TV-channel and more.

It is simply the modern way of taping records on a cassette and hooking on two videos to make a copy of the rented VHS tapes (remember: the 70's and 80's). The tapes have gone by now and the DVD or CD has taken its place.

Is it illegal? Is it legal? It is neither; things done with computers (call it advanced calculators) are often in a big grey area. You are making major calculations using a device that only knows 1's and 0's. The outcome is a result that might be called mp3 but still exist only out of 1's and 0's. How can that be illegal?

Intellectual Property, regardless of its format (whether the 0s and 1s of computers or a's and b's in print) is property nonetheless.

get a program called Dvd decrypter. Will solve your dvd copying issues but not your legal and ethical ones.

It is illegal yes. But if you don't go out selling hundreds of copies you will generally go unnoticed.

And keep the copy as well as the original yourself.

It's actually quite illegal. It's theft. Of course the pirates will claim that noone gets hurt and therefore it's not illegal but I HAVE seen people get hurt seriously.
Friends lost their jobs because of lowlife pirates, they lost their homes and pensions.
Thanks to pirates thousands of people end up on the street every year.

I rented it and burned it with DVD Shrink, I did the same with The Wedding Crashers. Screw Hollywood, they make anough off theses movies, its my way of sticking it to the man.
