Saving A Photo As JPG

Fri Jan 13, 2006 7:10 am

When I try to save a photo - even when I know it is a JPG - it only ever gives me one of two options regarding 'Save as': either Art or BMP. Why is this? How can I get JPG as an option again? Cheers.

What software are you using?

I know Microsoft Paint, Microsoft Photo Editor, Google Picasa, Adobe Photoshop Elements, Photoshop Pro, and virtually all other photo applications allow .jpeg format.

Thanks - except to 9VSPO.

Well, let's say I find a pic on A.net which I wish to save. I'll do the usual - right click, save, etc. - and the 'save as' options will only be Art and BMP - even when it's a JPG. :| Same as everywhere.

I suppose you are using Microsoft IE6 as your browser?

I use Mozilla (non-Fire Fox) and I am given the option to save pictures as .jpeg when I Right Click -> Save Image As.

Try the "save type" drop-down menu and select "all types." Then just type in .jpeg behind the file name.

Assuming your browser is Internet Explorer, this link might be of use to you:

Thanks.  Smile

I deleted all the temp. internet files etc., but it's still only giving me the choice of BMP or Art - not JPEG/JPG - even when the pic is definitely a JPG/JPEG. :|

In some software that does allow you to save an image as a .jpg there is one possible obstruction to it. If somehow the mode is not compatible with that format it will not save it so until you make a change.

Be sure you save an original before you mess around with this unless you don't mind losing the file!

Go into a menu that gives you the mode or properties of the image. Somewhere you should see that it is in an "RGB" format. If it is not, try to convert it to that. Once that is done the regular save menu should offer you the .jpg choice.

For example in Adobe Photoshop 7.0 which I am currently using it goes like this:

>Image
>> Mode
>>> RGB

If you have been working with the picture make sure you have "flattened" the layers. There are a number of actions you can perform that causes image software to change the working file into their own proprietary format and it cannot be changed back until you complete the action, as the layers example above.

If you don't find what you need here, try the photorgraphy forum as there are some wizards over there.

Strange! That always worked for me. Never had the problem with Firefox.

Open a new browser window. Copy and paste the URL of the photo into the address box of the new window. Then do the "save as." Works for me every time.

Try this?

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=810978

SUMMARY
When you save an image in Microsoft Internet Explorer, the image is saved by default as a bitmap (.bmp). You do not have the option to save the image by using an extension other than .bmp. You experience this behavior even when the image uses a different format (such as .gif or .jpeg).

For example, when you right-click an image on a Web page, and then click Save Picture As, the file name that appears in the File name box is Untitled, and the file type that appears in the Save as type box is Bitmap (*.bmp).

CAUSE
This behavior may occur if a damaged program file (for example, an ActiveX or Java object) is downloaded to the SystemRootDownloaded Program Files folder on your hard disk.

Depending on the software your using....you could always "export" the image as a jpg....

By using the export option under the File drop down window, it should allow you to change the file extention of the file....jpg...tiff...giff....etc. (they are all jpg/scanned image file extentions)
