How Did You Discover Airliners.net?

Mon Jan 16, 2006 11:12 am

Well...the topic is farely self-explanatory.

How many of you lurked around the forums for years before becoming a member?
How many of you became a member the day you discovered the website?

I discovered A.net whilst searching for plane pictures on Google. I must have browsed through thousands of pictures before finally discovering...the forums.

Tell us your stories about discovering A.net.

I found a.net when looking for a photo to use as a background on my computer before my first trip to St. Maarten. One of my friends who'd been there before told me about the landings, and I went looking for possible photos and hit the jackpot. It wasn't until a year or so later that I even discovered the forums and joined up a few months later.

I'm love photography. I love flying. One day, I entered "Airline Pictures" into Yahoo! and this came up. The rest is history. This was back in 2003. But I only joined in past few months.

A friend and I were looking for pictures of an ONA Electra for a mutual friend who had flown them. We found airliners.net but they didn't have such a picture in the database. They do now.

Later a commercial artist applying for a job at an airline where I worked used a video presentation that included toggle switches to select the various parts of it. He'd gotten the idea from this site's old home page.

I've been a regular here since then.

I was on a week-long exchange with the Air Cadets to Inuvik, Northwest Territories back in 2002. A couple of my friends were looking through the site in the small library up there, and so when I got home I checked it out a bit more, and now here I am.

I just checked and saw that I've been here since June 2000! It didn't seem THAT long ago...but given all that has happened to me since, I guess it has been a while..

I was looking for some info about either seating on a plane or info about an airport or something like that...I ended up here via some search engine...and stayed away from Non-Av for first 2-3 yrs as I recall...as was just needed info...Seems that I went to FlyerTalk or similar also...

Now that I basically don't fly anymore, since I left the corporate life, this forum is better suited to my needs now...

Kinda funny because I used to think that only the forums on the homepage were available....little did I know there were LOTS MORE! Sooooo, one night I finally decided to join.......

I been loving this site since late 1999, early 2000. I even tried to get some of my photos uploaded in late 2000, but they all had minor "defects" which got them rejected, it was worth a try. However it took me until Dec 2005 to actually become a member, but I wish I hadn't waited so long. There is so much more here than just great photos.

I was smoking up with my buddies and I was telling them how crazy the landing is at MLE. One of my friends asked me to try find pictures, so I went looking and found this site. Good thing I did.

As for the forums I lurked for a while till one day, one of the boeing cheerleaders said something so stupid about the 343 that I felt I had to sign up to correct him.

Was working in a computer lab at the end of a school year back in college. Decided to see what random websites might come up. I typed in www.(word).com, www.(word).net and www.(word).org.

Restricted myself to nouns and in alphabetical order.
When I came across www.airliners.net I bookmarked it.
After that I was just looking of swears and things along the lines of a 4th graders' mind set. You know...fart.com, fart.net, fart.org.

Since then I read A.net. But it wasn't till I was truely bored did I sign on.

In 98 when there was no google I went on askjeeves.com and searched for an-12 and a Balkan Bulgarian An-12 popped up. I was extremely happy so I click on it. It lead me to some sort of aviation portal. From there I saw it was from airliners.net but I didnt bother checking it out right away. I browsed through the portal and forgot the URL so then out of the corner of my eye I saw a little clicky link with a 747 that said airliners.net and the URL came back to me so I click on it and it leads me to a.net. No forums back then so I just went through all the Balkan pictures which were like 10-20. Now there's probably 2000 Bulgarian pics. Didn't discover the forums for 3 years until 2001. I've been going here for a while lol.

I was searching for pictures of Aer Lingus aircrafts in the 1970s then I found a.net. I didn't bookmark a.net or did anything. The next time when I searched the browsing history I couldn't find a.net. I decided to search for 1970 Aer Lingus aircrafts again and I found a.net again and I became a member since.

I stumbled upon a.net whilst looking for aircraft photos. I joined the dite about a month afterwards, but didn't realise there was a forum until about a year later, and then I only found civil aviation. I found non-av and the rest about 6 months after that, cos I was using a dreamcast for my internet at that time. I couldn't even load up the while front page, and half the page would take 10 minutes.

Before I knew about this site, I would type "airplane pictures" into google to satisfy my thirst for aviation. Eventually, like 5 years ago, I noticed the a.net URL on google. And since then I've been hooked, I never again had the need to use google for pics or anything to do with aviation. This site answers all my questions.
