Make Me Smile (Come Up And See Me)

Tue Jan 17, 2006 6:27 am

I really like the track Make Me Smile (Come Up And See Me) by Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel. Do you? Which other older songs do it for you?

Perhaps a better poll would be whom among us has actually heard of them?

While I'd be more than amused to compare transcultural experiences with the likes of yourself, sweetie... keep in mind that you just blew a chance to tell a potential new listener/fan about whomever the pissant little performers you enjoy are, and what makes them worth listening to. Good job.  thumbsup

As an ex-DJ I dumped all my old vinyl records (1970-1990s) three years ago. There were a lot of old classics in there including the above mentioned record. Must say, having heard it numerous times too many over the years, it completely lost its appeal.

As an aside for all you aviation freaks, one of the members of Cockney Reble was killed in the Pan Am 747 over Lockerbie.

James, The Wedding Present did a much heavier version of the song in 1990 which is cool, but obviously sacrifices the nice classical guitar solo in the middle. I agree it is a cool song, I like both versions. There is a lot of excellent music from the 60's and 70's and to be discovered by the younger generation. My favourite 70's song is probabaly 'Shake Some Action' by the Flamin' Groovies, a San Francisco band.

Never heard of that. It'd be good to listen to that sometime.

That is quite unfair. While many UK artists are given exposure over here, most aren't. According to my google research, Cockney Rebel was band formed in 1973, had several hits on the UK charts, toured in the UK and in Europe, and broke up in 1974. After Steve Harvey formed a new band, it toured briefly in the US as a lead in for the Kinks, but never achieved more than cult status in the US.

So how are we living in a shell if we haven't heard of the group?

It was a tongue-in-cheek remark, hence the   and   . However, it is evident that both you and Concordeboy seem remarkably concerned about it, to the extent that one must ask: what have you got to hide? Could the answer be that you live in your own shell?  Silly  Wink

Which is why, of course, you have not heard of this band.   Evidently, you are not as keen to learn about non-US bands/entertainment as you might think: if you were, you'd have known about this rather well-known UK band. So don't give me this 'I care more about other cultures shit': I have travelled very widely and I have lived in three other countries. Thank you.

In the event you missed it, I said I enjoy learning of such; I did not say that I had encyclopedic knowledge of evey foreign music maker out there and about.

I really like it. For those who've never heard it, it's on the Full Monty movie (as well as on the soundtrack CD, of course).
