Phobias - What Are You Afraid Of?

Sat Jan 21, 2006 7:27 am

I came across this list and just had to publish a link to it. Some of the fears listed are common, others not so common, but perhaps understandable, while others are just plain whacky and bizaare.

I find these few particularly funny......

Bibliophobia: Fear of books.
Caligynephobia: Fear of beautiful women. (Very odd indeed!)
Coprophobia: Fear of faeces
Didaskaleinophobia: Fear of going to school (Sunday night and the homework's still not done!)
Logizomechanophobia- Fear of computers (We've all got that obviously!)
Urophobia- Fear of urine or urinating. (Going to have a problem, aren't we?)

http://www.psychnet-uk.com/phobia_list/phobialist.html

Have a look, be honest and admit to one that you'e got, or one that worries you most!

I, to start off, am very "Suriphobic".

Your turn......

Getting blood drawn. Why is it, there are never any cute phlebotomists?

Also, being confined in a small area and having to listen to show tunes!

I have a fear of open back, spiral staircases. At work I hate walking up them, but it's only one floor up, so I use the stairs. Once, I walked to up two flights and stopped half way up the second flight of stairs. I nearly froze to the spot and though I was gonna fall. I was so petrified, I thought I was gonna be stuck there for ages. That's the only fear I have, really.

2) Crowded places (Agoraphobia)
3) Loud noises (Ligyrophobia)

I think that's my list  Wink Only the ligyrophobia is severe though... the other ones, I can pretty much control.

Spiders (Arachnophobia)

Scorpions and spiders. ugh. I have let a tarantula crawl from my hand to the back of my neck though. Kind of a weird feeling. My neighborhood is notorious for scorpions. I'll find them every couple of days during the summer. We used to go outside at night with a black light and catch them with tweezers (they glow in the dark). I cut a large one's stinger off with nail clippers and kept him as a pet. I named him Roger, and I'd let him crawl around on my hands while I watched TV. He died two weeks later though.

I think it's important to face such fears and analyze what makes you scared about them.

I'm not too fond of jellyfish either. I did once experience a jellyfish fight in Canada. Think...snowbal fight, except with jellyfish. I sort of felt like I had been slimed. Sorry 'bout that, PETA.  blush

I've always wondered about this. Lots of folks are afraid of heights, but don't mind flying. Surely the thought of falling 30000ft to your death would be a lot more frightening than falling 600ft (off a tall building for example) to your death.

I suggest that it's maybe the serenity of the situation as you look out the window that helps matters a little, as opposed to a bustling street with people, cars, kids going to school etc and therefore it's not so close to normality as maybe it could be...

Just a personal opinion, I've no idea really.....  confused

I know what you mean. How is it that somebody can get an incentive ride in an F-15C and enjoy it thoroughly, but still be petrified about jumping off of a 3 meter diving board?

Perhaps it is a feeling of...security, maybe? I don't feel like I am going to fall off an airplane or a roller coaster. Balconies and such just don't feel as secure to me.

Exposed high edges - buildings, cliffs, roofs, etc. I'm just fine if there is either some sort of barrier (window, etc.) or if I'm in a harness (hang gliding, paragliding, etc), but if it's just me and an exposed edge, I freeze.

Balloons, if you can believe it. I hate the things.

I also am afraid of heights. I have no problem with airplanes, but I do not like unprotected heights, and especially dangly heights. Chairlifts are hellacious for me. I read once that the fear of heights is not the fear that you will fall, but rather the fear that you will lose control and fling yourself from the height. I could believe that.

We stayed at the Luxor in Vegas once, in the Pyramid. When walking from the room to the elevator, I had to walk next to the wall and keep my hand on it at all times. I hate atrium style hotels.
But that was when I ruled the world

checkmark  It's a tangible thing I think . . . I have something to hold on to in a plane, in a building, etc. Even fast roping from a helo - hell, I'm Air Assault qualified - I just won't jump out of the plane with a chute!

Weird, but I have a friend who is afraid of balloons - I had my wedding reception in a Marquee and she was one of my friends who helped dress it up inside - consequently we had very few balloons in it !!

Me I can almost pass out if a moth comes near me - the bigger the moth the more I freak to the extent of a near panic attack ! - not sure what the name for that one is ?

I truly dislike heights - not in themselves, but rather the fear of falling. So, I won't go near a drop unless there's a very sturdy support. I won't go near the edge of a cliff. I sometimes won't even look over the edge of a pier - even when there is a sturdy support. I have, in the past, told girlfriends not to go so close to the edge because it makes me feel weird.

Acrophobia (heights) - I can do the top of the Sears Tower or FL360 just fine. But open heights, like the 7th floor balcony of my mom's apartment, I'm not going out there anytime soon.
How is one Graphophobic (fear of writing or handwriting)? I worked with a girl that was afraid of balloons.

I have a fear of edges ... my partner tries to tell me that I am lying and that I really have a fear of heights - my reply to him is "Bullshit , I am perfectly relaxed at 39000 feet on an aircraft ... therefore I am not scared of heights" put me at the edge of a roof at only 5 metres however and I am jelly
