QFF Must Be Delighted - Australia Republic Poll!

Sat Jan 21, 2006 3:36 pm

Our very own QantasForever must just be dancing a jig at the results of this poll.

Most Australians would support their country severing its constitutional ties with Britain if Prince Charles becomes king, survey results published Saturday indicated.

I am sure he will say "I could have told you that".

I indeed WAS surprised in 1999 when they voted in favour of the monarchy, and I am still surprised to see that the support for the republic even after death/abdication of QEII only is to be a shaky 52% . The Commonwealth includes many many republics, so that THIS should be no problem for Australians, NewZealanders and Canadians. It just would be fun if they would claim ownership rights on a royal castle in Britain for each one, plus some crown jewels in the Tower !  duck   laughing   innocent

Australia can stand in line behind South Africa when it comes to claiming ownership of the diamonds, as the biggest ones in the Crown Jewels come from here! The biggest diamond ever found, the Cullinan, a 3,106 carat damond found in 1905, was cut into 9 stones, 2 of which are in the Crown Jewels. The Cullinan I (530.2 carats, the world's largest cut diamond) is set in the head of the royal sceptre, and the Cullinan II (317.4 carats) is in the imperial state crown.

Seriously folks, I wasn't dancing in the streets when I saw this one. It shows how much work there is left to be done. Strangely at the moment, this poll shows that 46% of Australians want a republic. In 1999, 46% of Australians voted in favour of becoming a republic - this referendum was lost. In 2004, 46% of Australians voted for the conservative Liberal/National coalition under John Howard. Howard won the election.

There's a lot more going on here than you first think.

The most recent poll notes that 22% of Australians are undecided on the issue. This makes my work pretty clear - communicate how (in real terms) they would benefit from their country being a Republic. In a country with compulsory voting - it's a big job.

Truly, I have no interest in profiting from the death of the Queen (god knows I'll be spending my life savings on champagne - kidding!), any backlash against Charles is going to be short-term. He will endear himself to the Australian people, I'm absolutely convinced of this.

So again - it's not an issue that really involves the royals, any argument relating to them is simply complimentary to our central thesis.

My god - as if we want those drafty old ruins. Seriously - the Misery Isles can keep them.

Yes it does get awfully dusty here in the leafy northern suburbs on the banks of Sydney harbour.

And let me assure you, I don't wonder why you get so annoyed with me.

Yeah you most probably don't wonder why we get so annoyed at you, but I thought you were an intelligent person but you seem to have to resort to cheap sniping at people, I mean why exactly do you dub us the 'Misery Isles'?

You probably treat your oppostion in Australia the same way, it's no wonder you can't convince your fellow countrymen to become a Republic. Maybe you should try to be more positive instead of hurling insults at people.

Feeling a little insecure today, Gman? Has the British composure been rattled?

I can assure you that it was entirely a joke. The reference to your country as "The Misery Isles" harks back to a television show that was extremely popular in Australia (and also in the UK I believe) called "The Micalleff Pogram/Programme/Program".

Perhaps you feel you know the Australian constitution better than I do? Perhaps you feel that convincing the overwhealming majority of 20 million people is an easy thing to do? I don't tell you how to whine, don't tell me how to do my job.

To be honest QFF I don't really give a toss about whether Australia is a Republic or not or how you go about convincing your fellow countrymen, but in future if your comments are meant to joke you can try adding a smiley then I won't have to pull you up on it.

No the composure is fine though I am a bit tired and grumpy after a stressful night at work and if there was a problem a nice cup of tea would solve it. Big grin

Something slighty off topic:

It does depend on your budget - but my favourite Sydney hotel is the Hotel Intercontinental. Of course the hippest and newest is the newly renovated Hilton which is absolutely mindblowing.

I'm a bit surprised the percentage in favour of a republic (with the Charles as King factor) isn't higher.

I'm not sure that he would endear himself with time, although he may in Britain. I think the more likely scenario is that he will just garner some sort of benign acceptance among the undecided, with people wondering how long it will be before William takes over. That is the danger scenario for the Republican movement.

I dont blame Britain that we are still in our present situation. Personally, I think that these days Britain would be perfectly content to have an arm's length, non Commonwealth relationship.

Cheers

I couldn't give a f*ck what Britain thinks about this issue as it has nothing to do with them. Still, they don't care - as they repeatedly point out.

I have had this strong belief for a great deal of time. The Brits will hate him, Australians will love him in time. You wait and see.

There were similar results in Canada about 8 months ago. I believe it has more to do with a dislike of Charlesand horse face than a pro republic reaction. Now when HM goes, hopefully Charles is smart enough to be passed over in favour of William. Then problem solved.

I would have thought Canada would be a long way ahead of either Australia or New Zealand on the road to becoming a republic after all Canada actually has a proper flag of it's own ... and has had for over 40 years now while we make do with the tired old versions of the British Blue Ensign

When I was in Sydney I stayed in the Mercure hotel in Darling Harbour, not too expensive and handy for the harbour ferry, also a nice pub across the road in the Pyrmont Bridge Hotel.

if you do a survey inside any prison, you will find a majority of the inmates are in favour of escaping.

nope, he's dead set on becoming King George VII.

Personally I just wish he'd retire to his Duchy Originals sausage factory and concentrate on talking to plants.

I think they are more interested in getting on with life than the piss and wind moaning of pseudo-republicans. If Canada does fully detatch then it's their own business, but they seem to have other priorities. Not like it means anything in the real world anyway.

As for flags...where did I put that Australian one I designed for them....

Of Canada, Australia, and New Zealand - Australia is much closer to becoming a Republic.

Also the issue of the flag is quite separate from the republican debate.

If that was an attempt at wit, I'm afraid we're unmoved.

Every time you belittle the fight for a Republic it does nothing but make you look ignorant. Really ignorant.
