There was an incident with a Seabourne yacht several weeks ago, in the same location. There's a thread somewhere . . . don't feel like searching for it  wink .

Why couldn't there be piracy still . . . there's still slavery. . . . there's still anarchy . . . there's still dictatorships . . . the world is a hosed up place . . .

Pirates? We don't need no stinking pirates!

Designed with this specific thing in mind, allow me to introduce the
Barrett Model 82A1 Semi Automatic Ten Round .50 Caliber Rifle

The bastards better have something bigger than AK-47's! They'd never even get within a half-mile!

Actually, I think that Arleigh Burke has something a bit better than that. Introducing the Mk 45 5" gun

Yeah, I know. But the yacht that ANC was referring to (and the cruise ship a couple of months ago) shoulda had a .50 on board. Cheap insurance.

Here's the story about the criuse ship:

Source: http://www.heraldnet.com/stories/05/11/06/100wir_apirate001.cfm

"Pirates attacked a luxury cruise ship off the Horn of Africa early Saturday, waking passengers with a daring sunrise fusillade of grenades and gunshots before the ship outran the two boats carrying the assailants, the Miami-based cruise line reported.

None of the 151 passengers aboard the Seabourn Spirit were injured in the 5:30 a.m. assault, although one crew member was hit by shrapnel and the ship sustained minor damage, Seabourn Cruise Line spokesman Bruce Good said in Miami."

"The captain came on the loudspeaker, telling everyone that there were 'unfriendly' vessels on the starboard side and to stay in our rooms. The plink of bullets on the side was very noticeable,"

"The pirates, about four or five in each of two 25-foot boats, continued firing and trying to board the ship. The captain ordered all passengers to assemble in an interior lounge for safety, and the ship accelerated toward the portside, Supple recounted, in what appeared to be an attempt to ram the assailants. The ship then took off at full speed, he said."

I haven't heard about that book but will check it out.

William Langewiesche also covered modern ocean piracy in his book The Outlaw Sea, which is a great read. In an interview on Fresh Air from a couple of years ago, he gave an interesting perspective on how sea piracy has gotten very sophisticated. If you cue 10 minutes and 15 seconds into this interview you can hear about it:

http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=1912599

Also, he goes on to talk about how in 1999, a Japanese freighter was hijacked by Indonesian pirates near the Strait of Malacca, who made off with the ship after setting the crew adrift in lifeboats. By a stroke of luck, they were eventually intercepted thousands of miles away by the Indian Navy after a running gun battle of two days.

You can also read about it here if you scroll down to Section III. The New Piracy:

The Somalia coast and the straits of Malacca are the world's most dangerous areas where piracy is concerned but other areas of the African and SE Asian coast are dangerous as well.

Local naval and law enforcement forces are spread too thin, underequipped and/or corrupt and incapable of dealing with the phenomenon.

The cruise ships are better armed than we think. Here is a partial article.

The crew of a luxury cruise ship used a sonic weapon that blasts earsplitting noise in a directed beam while being attacked by a gang of pirates off Africa this weekend, the cruise line said Monday.

The Seabourn Spirit had a Long Range Acoustic Device, or LRAD, installed as a part of its defense systems, said Bruce Good, a spokesman for Miami-based Seabourn Cruise Line. The Spirit was about 100 miles off Somalia when pirates fired rocket-propelled grenades and machine guns as they tried to get onboard.

Here's the link http://www.breitbart.com/news/2005/11/07/D8DNUV2G3.html

A Google search on cruise ships and sonic weapons turned up loads of stuff. They are even listing it in their brochures as a perk.

Piracy on the high seas is the domain of international laws and enacted typically by the captain of the ship that captures the pirates.
Penalties are severe, usually involving a rope, a noose, and a yardarm.

Of course in these degenerate (also called "civilised" by some) days, the more usual approach is to turn them over to the country of origin of the ship they were in for trial.
