Cost Of Living In Lucerne Switzerland

Wed Jan 25, 2006 5:17 am

Hey guys,

Got a question for our Swiss friends out there.

My current contract job is ending this month, so I am sniffing around for another. One that I am a bit curious about happens to be in Switzerland.

Can anybody familiar with the region give me some info on what costs to expect?

Costs in Lucerne are not cheap, if you compare to American costs. It also depends on what your standard of living is. I'd say that if you are single, you need an income of at least 4,000 or 5,000 Francs per month to live comfortably and not want for anything.

Here is a website where you can get an idea of apartment costs. I've already tailored it for lucerne.

You can of course get better deals if you live out of town, but you'll have to commute. If you don't mind that, I'd recommend going to one of the neighboring towns, where the taxes are lower.

I was born in Lucerne, and I still have family there and visit 5 or 6 times per year. Drop me a line if you need any help. It's really one of the most beautiful places in the world to live.

I am hoping that when I get the specifics on the job, they have something set up for their employees. But we will wait and see....

I haven't even looked at a map yet to see what side of the country Lucerne is on.

I hadn't been there for a few years till December - it is beautiful. Lots to do: lakes, mountains and, of course, the transport museum, all on your doorstep and it's not far from the Alps, Zurich, Bern, etc. And the quaint covered wooden bridge would be a novelty for a good few days.  Smile

I would say a rough estimate in US dollars for a very basic but confortable standard of living would require an income (assuming no saving or loans to pay off) of around $4000 (assuming you are single). I crunched some numbers once for Basel and it came out to be a little below that figure but Basel also it a tad bit cheaper.

(that wont be luxurious either)

Here is a link to an English language magazine and an excellent book on living and working in Switzerland.

Good Luck (it's a great place to live)

Beautiful lake. The entire country is beautiful in that Alaska/Wyoming mountain way.

If you can get the contract you really ought to give it a shot.

Agree, although Switzerland in fact is one of the most dense populated countries in the world.
A lot of people don't know that, but even the mountain areas are populated in Switzerland unlike the Alaskan regions.

It's quite weird to see valley floors populated by decent sized towns and then several hundred meters up, clinging to what seem like near-vertical mountains on either side, there are more small clusters of buildings. I guess that's why hang-gliding's so popular there!

I'd say take it if you have the chance. It'll probably be more expensive than in the US, but Switzerland's an amazing country, and I'd love to live there one day.

Well, I haven't heard back on that job...but the planets where aligned yesterday.

At 3:15 one of the managers of a different section came over to ask if I would be willing to stick around for another 3 weeks while a different buyer is out on vacation.

At 3:20 while I was looking up some contact information for the contract house I go through for him, I got a call from another company facility asking to set up an interview with them for week after next.

After that call I got a call from another supply chain company here in town asking to interview today.

So three requestions for interview in 15 minutes!

Wow! that has never happened to me before.

Add to that fact when I got home, the university sent me my blue card, which means that I can go down and pick up by Diploma!
