How Hard Is "copy And Paste"?!1!

Sun Jan 29, 2006 8:02 am

Ok a little rant.....

Every time I go to my dad's its complete hell.... For me anyhoo lol

My dad has a laptop and has no idea on how to use it most of the time, I have to explain every program to him in complete detail, I ask If I can take the laptop and show him but no, I have to talk and he does the work which is not easy to do for me...

Now on the subject of copy and paste... I have had to show him at least 20 time and explain the function to him way to many times, He has even called me demanding to know how to do it because the laptop has apprently "locked him out" because he has "tried to do it so many times" lol

Ok, Rant over... Anyone have similar friends, or family members who has no idea??

*grr pulls out hair*

I find the solution is easy - my standard charge of £150+VAT per hour tends to put off all but the most desperate of luddites.  Silly

My mom is kinda like that, however for her it is typing. She is a "pecker". That is she pushes each button one at a time and if she is typing a paragraph in an email for example, and makes a mistake 5 lines up she doesn't click over the error and correct it, she deletes the entire paragraph back to the point where the error was and spends another 30 minutes "pecking" to get back to where she was before...
A total waste of time if you ask me!  bomb

Worse, my mother pimps me out  Sad

Countless number of times shes come home from work and said 'oh so-and-so is having problems with her computer, i said you would take a look, do you mind?'.

I dont get anything out of it, and the problem is Ive found that once Ive even touched someone elses computer, suddenly all their problems become mine.

Even worse - I stopped using Windows at home around a year ago.

I have to start charging!

I support about 1,000 people just like this every day where I work. Guess that's why I get the big bucks, huh?  Yeah sure

I used to do the same, then I switched to writing applications. Support just pisses me off these days, I really hate doing it.

Sounds like any woman who's ever asked me about a computer issue. Most know what to do or not to do, but as soon as you meet one who doesn't... good luck!

Seriously, tell your father to get a little paper notebook where he can write step-by-step instructions for everything you teach him. My mother did that, makes the whole thing so much more relaxed - now the things she asks are actually stuff you don't usually run into.

Buy him a copy of "Windows for Dummies" or similar and tell him it's his birthday's gift in advance.

My dad is EXACTLY the same. I have to show him how to save documents onto a floppy disk, show him how to copy and paste and other such tasks. I'm amazed he manages to plug it!

My mom who can type excellently on her work computer seems to think that our home computer has "many viruses" because it doesn't function as fast or the exact same way as her work computer. She's constantly calling me in for help, and never remembers it afterwards. Very frustrating.

Geeeeeee..... I could waste all the bandwidth of A.net to bitch about that. Last Saturday.... no, it was actually Sunday, I came back from ZRH, I stayed at my parents house since I flew out of DUS. I was awake for more than 30 hours but the first thing I heard after opening the door was "Patrick, this shit here doesn't work, make that it works". My reply: "Only when you organize a Schnaps and a Bier".

My father organized the Schnaps and the Bier and I explained Excel to him.  Wink

Sorta the same, but I turned it into an actual part time business. Now showing people how to use the computer and clearing out spyware and viruses nets me an extra 20K a year - my travel and play money!

My dad still faithfully uses his Apple IIE to do his business finances with, so I'm not even sure he knows what "cut and paste" are, much less how to use them (he also has a modern computer, but needs constant tutorials in its use).  old

So, my dad's 80 and we get him a computer. He learns e-mail and basic word functions, the internet, etc.

At first he would send an e-mail and then call us to see if we got it.

The best one was when he got message to the effect of:

"MS word as performed an Illegal Action"

So he calls me up and said, "I am a lawyer, I didn't do anything illegal!
