Roof Collapses At Polish Convention Hall

Sun Jan 29, 2006 9:49 am

It happend in the Urals, it then happened in Germany, and now once again the roof of a large public structure collapses possibly due to the weight of the recent heavy European snow. This time, near Katowice, there was an estimated 500 people inside. So far, 20 have been killed, including some children. Sad 100 are still believed to be trapped.

It has just been reported on Sky News that snow does not seem to be the cause, a Polish journalist said that the owners of the building had been careful to sweep the roof regularly due to the large amounts of snow they had been receiving.
After Monday and Tuesday even the calendar says WTF...

I read those details too recently. And they say the building was completed in the late '90s, thus still relatively new. I wonder what the inquiry will say.

Time is running out in these temps, though rescuers are now blowing warm air under the rubble to help give survivors a fighting chance in this cold. Thoughts and prayers with them...

Reports now say at least 60 dead, possible hundred or more still trapped, up to 500 inside at the time of collapse attending a racing pigeon show.

The town where I live in New Jersey has a high % of people from Poland. I would hope no one here lost a relative or friend there. I bet the local Churches added prayers for those affected by this. Apparently heavy snows triggered this collaspe. There also could have been poor roof or roof drainage design that could have contributed to this, but that will be among the subjects of the investigation. It is a sad situation there.

Pretty bad; It's been the headliner in the news here since it happened. Sad

If it wasn't for the snow, maybe the unusually cold weather had a part, making the metal more brittle and thus less strong than planned by the architects...

Indeed a suggested possibility. Conflicting reports are coming in now, some say warm air was not blown into the wreckage for fear it would melt the snow that was essentially holding what was left of the roof up. Melt the snow and the debris further collapses on still trapped victims.

How horrible. And at a Pigeon Exhibition...hundreds of peaceful people there enjoying a peaceful hobby and this happens. Sad
