What Is The Strangest Food You Have Ever Had?

Title says it all.... For me:

Pickled blackbird from Cyprus
Swallow's nest from Hong Kong
Lamb's testicles from Iran

I had jellyfish while flying in SQ's Biz Class. At first I didn't want to touch it but then my seat neighbor (who was from SIN) persuaded me. I am glad he did, it was actually pretty good and certainly something different.

An Alaskan Native dish - whale blubber (muktuk) mixed with berries and sometimes dried meat, frequently fermented. One version I had wasn't that bad, they used store bought frozen strawberries and added sugar. I lost my cookies when I tried a mouthfull of the 'traditional' version.

Raw sea urchin taken straight out of a fish tank in a sushi restaurant. Have had jellyfish and while it wasn't gross, it was like trying to eat rubber.

HAGGIS! I think it is spelled this way.

I spent 10 days in the Highlands, and it was nasty!

I don't like eating fancy meats but purely for diplomacy I've had:

  • Kangaroo in Australia
  • wild bear sausages in Finland
  • various parts of goat's heads in Arab countries, also had camel once
  • and the best of all was reindeer and cheese soup in Finland.

That was one yummy soup!
and with that..cabin crew, seats for landing please.

Chicken feet with claws and everything. The Chinese love those things-but I will never go for it. It's nasty watching my friend eat it.

You don't like Eskimo ice cream? Not too surprising. I haven't had it with muktuk, but I have had the Athabaskan version which uses moose or caribou fat with the berries and sugar. It actually wasn't too bad.

As for the weirdest food, it would have to be muktuk, just straight muktuk. Can't say that I really enjoyed it. My Eskimo friend said that I should have tried it dipped in seal oil, but she doesn't like muktuk anyway.

Lets just say I wouldn't serve it at a formal dinner. Like I said, with strawberries and sugar it wasn't too bad. But the 'real' version they served me next did me in. It had been fermented (including the blueberries they'd blended in) and had no sugar. I was able to eat a couple bites in front of everyone, but it came up about five minutes later. Muktuk itself is bearable, but I haven't tried it in seal oil.

I once ate Mungi chutney (A paste made out of ants) in a small tribal village near Karjat(A small town near Mumbai). Almost puked after having that.

Correct spelling, incorrect views on haggis! It's absolutely fantastic!

I too have also had jellyfish. I had on my last day in BKK, it was fantastic! (I was in HKT when the tsunami hit).

I've also had snails which were horrible!

Like they say, the Chinese eat anything on 4 legs except the table.

Strangest food I tried was Blood Sausage from Scandanavia as well as "lutefisk". Both at my friends house and both tasted horrible.

I have consumed the flesh of an endangered species....the Bowhead whale.

Haven't tried the eskimo ice cream though.....I have heard of the "City-fied" version of it which substitutes crisco for the animal fat.

As for myself, the "strangest" things would probably be roasted or grilled chicken hearts and some of the seafood I enjoy every now and then, so nothing really weird.

Kangaroo tail in Dublin, Ireland back in 1998. Tasted just like beef, but i was more interested in the lady sat opposite me.

Cheers

You mean okra? Was it fried? If it wasn't fried, then that's why it was gross. Although frying a vegetable defeats the purpose of eating a vegetable, fried okra is quite tasty. Texas isn't exactly the best place to get them though, I'm sure there are better-suited places in the Southeast.
