Car Nutters - Which Should I Get?

Tue Jan 31, 2006 12:31 pm

Hey guys,

Since my little car accident last year in Monaco I *still* haven't bought a car of my own. I've been driving a 2001 Holden Commodore owned by my parents-in-law while they're out of the country, but they'll soon be coming to Australia so I have to vacate the car.

I've been a big fan of Jaguar for a long time and drove an S-Type when I was in France. I'm keen to re-live the experience, so I've been looking at a few alternatives. I've narrowed it down to either the Jaguar XJ6 X350 or the Mercedes-Benz E350 Elegance W211. Do you guys have any advice for me? Any experiences with either cars or a similar model?

Buy a more economical car so you can buy a motorcycle along with it.

Go for the Jag mate, it will remind you of the superior majesty of the colonial motherland!!  Wink Merc spares and servicing can get a little frightening in the southern hemisphere, have you considered a big V8 Holden or Ford? Just as much fun!

As beautiful as at least some of them are, outside of Britain, Jags are rather tacky.

Look, I've been driving this Holden for a fair few months now and I'm just not feeling it. There was something really special about cruising along the winding bends of the grande cornishe in my little Jag. There's something about those shiny european cars that really floats my boat.

Over the past few years, reports have said the Jaguars have been lacking in quality. Go for the Benz!

Hve you read reports about Benz's of late? The only Benz I'd currently buy new is the CLS and possibly the new S Class.

My father had a 2000 built S500 in the UK and after 4yrs the ignition motor went, cost $1500. Then in April that battery started failing for no apparent reason, the Benz dealer couldn't fix it and it was becoming a big hassle. They thought it was a problem with the COMAND system (Navigation, TV , CD player unit) but weren't sure as it was a new thing to them. They were going to have to take the dashboard apart and then put it back together without re-assurance of fixing the problem. With worries about it rattling like buggery and a bill for new brake pads and disc estimated at $12,000 the keys were handed back. This was only after 90,000 miles!

At one stage my father was doing a lot of daytrips to AMS from LHR and was getting up at 3.30am to find the car battery flat. He was jump starting it and driving it to the airport and would come back at 9pm to find it as flat as a pancake so he started taking my brother's car and showed me how to jump start it off my mother's car and gave me the keys for a couple of months. I was miffed by the end but was fine for trips into town, nights out, boarding school reunions etc  Wink

He spoke to another chap who he knows that had similar issues with his S Class and work colleague has a new style E Class that is showing similar problems at 1yr of driving.

Apparently the new CLS is meant to be much better, but time will tell. If it turns out to be decent it could well be on the shopping list next time around. MB just dropped the ball when it came to build quality in the late 90s until late and I think the present E Class is part of that phase.

Have to say I am not a fan of Jags and would never buy one, but the present XJ gets good reviews. If I were in your shoes I'd consider an Audi A8 or top of the line A6.

I just bought a new E280CDI. Trust me before you by any car drive one of these. 35-40MPG on the highway and has more power than you would have ever though possible. They are sensational. The Jaguars have resale like a gliding brick

Get a Bentley then but if its political credibility you're after you really should drive Australian made and nothing that could be associted with England or Englishness, both the Rolls and the Bentley are British Upper class cars but really they're German...remind you af any Royal families in the UK??

Serioulsy though, if it could bite you in the political butt I'd be very careful what you buy.

True true. Still if I were to get either it would be a second hand for $60,000. So it's not likely. Honestly, I really don't like the look of the new bentleys. Those crossed grills look cheap and unfinished.

To be honest, my political associates couldn't care less what I drove. If they questioned me driving a British car, I'd tell them that in the same manner we welcome British immigrants into this country - why not British cars that wish to defect?  Wink

I would say that in your price range, consider a Lexus LS. They are by far and away superior to anything the Germans build these days.

Fbg is right - the current E-class in particular has got a bad reputation for reliability - a shame as it spoils a very good car. also Mercedes quality is not what it was - the interior is getting cheaper all the time.

checkmark  that would be my choice - but then I'm Audi-biased. Certainly for superb build quality and a fantastic interior then these are the ones to go for.

Jags break easily and costly to fix. British cars were always known for their lack of reliability. Personally, having always wanted a German car, and having just bought a Belgian built German car, I would go for the Merc.

Look at it from the point of view, whats going to cost you the least to operate and what's the best value for money at the time of purchase. I used this theory and came to the conculusion that the Astra was a sensible purchase.

Not to mention the Board of Directors.

As Automobile manufacturers "Globalize" (my word), it seems that the corporate philosophy is unclear. Is seems that manufacturers want to be everything to everybody, build a global vehicle that appeals to the masses. That is why, in general, design has gotten so homogeneous.

Now the pendulum is swinging the other way and manufacturers are making "image cars" and using retro styling to make a statement.
The problem is, with global ownership and global management, they don't have a clue as to what their image was, is, or should be!

Hey, I drive a Mercedes!  box

I do love it, but the electrical system is worrying me a bit. Before it comes off warranty I will have the dealer take a good look at it. Stuff like headlights that go out and then come back on a week later for no good reason, and a window that won't go all the way up on the first try.

But as for Jaguars, I do NOT like the last few model years of Jags. They look like Ford Tauruses. I did like the XJR in about 2002 - it is considered a competitor to my CLK. But I do prefer the Mercedes.

I think when you're getting into this class of car, unless you're willing to go Japanese, you should realize that repairs will be not unlikely and not cheap.
But that was when I ruled the world
