People With Funny Names

Wed Feb 01, 2006 3:36 am

Since my last topic here was a bit of a downer, I feel like lightening the mood. When I do the deposit at the bookstore where I work, I add the credit card tapes, and come across several funny last names. Here are a few of my favorites:

Goodblanket
Glasscock
Titz

And the best of all:
Nicewanger

What funny names have you come across?

As my own causes some merriment, I will not comment. However, mine is in the annuls of aviation history (yes, it is my family).

as a travel agent I used to see some great ones - particularly due to recent immigration where names that are perfectly fine in one culture just do not transplant well into another .... eg lovely Thai lady who came into our travel agency with her very sweet little 3 year old son called Wankit. I also had one client whose parents thought it was very funny to call her Carrie - what's so funny about Carrie , nothing.... unless your surname is Beehan ( say it fast and you'll get the idea ) . Even more astoundingly for those of you who like 'telephone' jokes there are actually people out there with names like Mike Hunt ( I'm not kidding ) .

Confession time : I am also extremely pleased that when my grandfather got my grandmother pregnant he did the decent thing and ran away rather than marrying her ... otherwise my surname would be "Wildgoose"

I remember, years ago, seeing a shop in Copenhagen called Boghandels.

I hope it wasn't named after the owner!

Anyone familiarising theirselves with the works of Charles Dickens will encounter some very funny names.

Ebeneezer Scrooge, the miser who with the help of three ghosts redeems himself in A Christmas Carol.

Uriah Heep - not the British rock band, but a devious and fraudulent clerk in David Copperfield.

In The Pickwick Papers we meet Mr. Pickwick (after whom a brand of Dutch tea is named) and his three friends Mr. Winkle, Mr. Snodgrass and Mr. Tupman.

Leafing through Bleak House you can chance upon a  grumpy  old  baronet, Sir Leicester Dedlock, a money lender by the name of Grandfather Smallweed and a hapless law clerk, Mr. Guppy.

To name but a few.

Regards, Robert  bouncy

In the county i grew up in there were three listings under "Whalebelly"...you'd think someone would have changed it.

Anyway, 19 and drunk, I phoned one of them up one night, the retarded conversation went thus:

"Cromer 547654"

"Is that Mr Whalebelly?"

"Yes, speaking"

"You've got a funny name haven't you?"

"click"

Oh the folly of youth...

Here in Arizona, there is a fellow in the Phoenix area named FUN. That's his legal name which was changed when he lived in Texas. Evidently the folks at the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles are more reasonable than our Arizona Department of Transportation as they had no problem issueing him a license. He got his license here but only after extra hassle froim ADOT.

My kid was taking swimming lessons and there was a mother of one of the other children there who appeared to be of Pakistani or Indian heritage (forgive me, I'm not very good at distinguishing people from that part of the world). Anyway, she kept calling one of her smaller children what sounded like "Junkie". Is that a common name for that part of the world? Was I just hearing the name wrong? If so, how is is spelled?

Working for a firm of solicitors, I send lots of letters. The main one that I can remember is writing to Mr Fuk Qu.

I was going to meet someone called Eileen Dover, but she had already fell off the cliff.

There used to be a NASCAR driver by the name 'Dick' Trickle which is short for Richard Trickle. But for some reason he calls himself 'Dick' and not Richard...

Two come to mind! No offense if I was stuck with these surnames, I'd change them lickety split.

  • John Fugelslang: some non descript reality show host with a stupid sounding last name. In the same vein as Ryan Seacrest, total white bread.
  • An olympic sno boarder named Tommy Czchine (ryhmes with machine)

Just my 2 cents worth.

When my son was born he was premature and we got to spend the better part of a month in the NICU and the most entertaining part of this was the names of these kids. The best was a super premature(<2 lbs) black baby whose parents named him Mont Blanc. The irony in this name damn near killed me.

Good news is he made it OK - far from a certain thing at that low of a birth weight.

Why should we search for funny names over there when we have such a great example here on A.net?  Confused

The well known A.netter Pilot Kaz has a nickname that in Italian sounds like "Pilot Cock"... not bad!  duck
