7 Dead In A Postal Shooting In Santa Barbara

Wed Feb 01, 2006 4:08 am

I just heard on the radio that a former postal worker opened fire on a sorting facility in Goleta, CA outside Santa Barbara. The kicker is, it was carried out by a woman, so could this just be a case of PMS?

If I am not mistaken, PMS cases don't normally result in the sufferer going on a murderous rampage. Therefore, no, this is not just a case of PMS.

I'd like to know why the postal service seems to have a lot more of these types of crimes. Do they really or is it the news just reporting on these more often than others?

What is it about the postal service workplace that causes these outbursts? Any postal workers in these forums care to elaborate?

I doubt it. Sounds as if she was just poppin' caps at some people that pissed her off.

It's a shame, 7 people dead. Doesn't say if she was an employee there.

It says the last shooting at a postal facility was in 1998, in Dallas, TX. So it doesn't happen as often as you might think.

Incidents like this is what makes those of us who own and carry firearms safely and legally look bad in the public eye.

There will be public outcry about this, but there is not nearly as much public outcry about cases of road rage or drunk driving, which kill many times more people each year. Why not?

I had a girlfriend once who would. In fact I wonder if she's living California now. Wouldn't surprise me if it was her...

Well, the local news outlets are all over this story, as this lady has a connection to New Mexico. Apparently, she had lived in my home town since 2003:

Quote:
Postal authorities said Jennifer Sanmarco, of Grants, had worked at the Santa Barbara Processing and Distribution Center more than two years ago but was given a disability retirement in 2003 for an unspecified psychological reason.

The post offices here in North East Ohio are staffed with the walking dead to say the very least, so I really do not understand how or what stress these people are under. And do not get into delivering wrong mail, as almost once a week I get delivered the wrong mail, how hard is it!

Is it someting they put in the airconditioning at post offices over there, or are they all just screwed up?

The high numbers of incidents like this involving US Postal Service employees is quite pecular and should be subject to a serious academic psychlogical study. I know and have known many whom work for the USPS, what they have to do, and from that let me suggest some resons for this.
If you notice, most of the USPS employees that 'flip' into violence are inside people, not those that do the home or business deliveries, spending most of their day outside the local post offices. Working in a USA post office is highly stressful. There are unrelenting volumes of mail, you have the pressure for 99.999% accuracy, with a lot of supervision to tight numerical goals of monitoring. Then add the internal politics culture at each post office facilities especially the fights over the easier and more preferred assignments based upon time, the affects of disipline upon your opportunites for better assignments and you have a pressure situation.
One also has to wonder if the people whom end up in the USPS are disportionally psychlogically troubled. Far too often people look at USPS employees as losers at any other jobs, like those with other Civil Service and union protected government jobs which makes is near impossible to fire bad employees.
That is my thoughts on why these sad acts of violence seem to occur far too frequently at USPS facilities. It is something the USPS needs and has tried to deal with over the years.

Why? Are you fascinated that I own a firearm? Are you fascinated that I carry it legally? Are you even more fascinated that I carry it safely?

Or do you just find it fascinating that anyone could actually own a firearm and not use it in a threatening or lethal manner against another person?

I hear about bad things that happen in Canada, but I have never said to anyone that I am "fascinated" that they have the Canadian flag by their name.

So please don't try to imply that anyone who owns a firearm is like the person who committed this horrible act. What happened was that a crime was committed, it just so happened that it involved a firearm, and that's why I said what I said in Reply 5. It makes people like you who jump to conclusions and live by stereotyping try to use an event like this to put all those who own firearms into the same category.

I hope I misinterpreted what you were implying, but I feel confident that I did not.

She was on Postal Service property, I think that pretty much answers that question. Somebody dropped the ball along the way in her psychological assesments, she had some very deep problems.

And the weakest link in any security setup, as most of us know, is the "typical user". She tailgated another car into the facility. How can you teach people that they need to stop just past the gate to let it close so that the next person has to offer their credentials to enter? Not to say that would have stopped this person, this obviously had been at least somewhat planned out. But at least it might have alerted someone in authority that something was going on.

Well, it appears the dealth toll has risen  Sad :

Quote:
A hospital official said a sixth postal worker shot by a former employee has died.

Meanwhile, a former neighbor of the woman who opened fire inside a Goleta, Calif., mail processing center has been found dead, a possible seventh victim of the woman's rampage.

The body was discovered Tuesday evening at a condo complex where former postal employee Jennifer Sanmarco, 44, once lived. Sheriff's deputies have determined the victim was killed by a gunshot wound to the head Monday evening.

http://www.thenewmexicochannel.com/news/6648950/detail.html

When this story first broke, I thought it odd that I hadn't come across this woman or even heard of her, as Grants/Milan is a small community. I was talking about the story with a co-worker today, and I realized I had. When I worked at Wal-Mart, she'd come into to the store at least once a week, always talking to someone who wasn't there. Management always kept a close eye on her.

One time, she scared the hell out of a friend of mine who was gathering carts in the parking lot. Out of no where he hears screaming. He thought someone was being attacked in the parking lot, but turned around to find her having a very heated argument with the empty passenger seat of her car.  scared
