What Is Santa Monica, CA Like?

Wed Feb 01, 2006 7:53 am

I have a possible job offer with a company in Santa Monica, California.

I want to know, what kind of place is it?

Have you traveled or lived there? What did you like or dislike about it?

I'm sure Diamond can give you the best 411 on Santa Monica.I used to live in that area, many years ago and it wasn't bad, just expensive. But in So.Cal. it's all relative.

Put it this way, if an aunt of mine hadn't screwed me out of renting a room in a house on Lincoln Blvd that she inherited, I probably would have stayed in SoCal rather than moving here in '87.....

.....of course, then I wouldn't have met my wife kiss  , and been blessed with two great daughters, my first grader of which is now a finalist in the school spelling bee highfive . So it all ended up good in the end.

Santa Monica is a nice, expensive area, with a busy beach area, and an awesome pier: http://www.santamonicapier.org

Santa Monica is quite expensive, and the city government is pretty far left politically (often referred to around here as the People's Republic of Santa Monica).

However, if you got a job there you wouldn't necessarily live there. SM is just one piece of a huge megalopolis. You might find a place to live in any of thirty or forty cities within commuting distance.

The big problem will be that commute...many people out here spend a couple hours each day on the freeway. Brutal!

Where would you be coming from? Your biggest adjustment will probably be housing costs. A reasonable house could well set you back $700,000 or more. An apartment $1750/month at least.

So...$2500/month housing + $400/month for gas...you're out close to $36,000 and you've hardly gotten started!

Good luck...

Santa Monica itself is a pretty nice area. On the coast its pretty nice but the 3rd street area is full of bums.

On aggregate I'd say its a nice place to live, as has already been mentioned I don't know if you'd actually end up living there. Southern California ends up being quite expensive and totally not worth it.

What do I like about it? Pretty good restaurants, nice landscape, the pier, plenty of babes. In short, its the Los Angeles which is exported to the world.

What do I hate about it? The rest of Los Angeles which is a complete shizzlehole.

If you're in Scottsdale, isn't that a pretty nice place to live? Unless this is a huge step forward in your career, steer clear of LA.

What I remember from a visit there a few years ago was the incredible number of Mercedes convertibles on Santa Monica Blvd. Amazingly, many were being driven by blue-haired, grandma types.

Lots of vanity plates, too.

Oh that O.J.'s jury had been picked from Santa Monica's populace like it should have been. He'd be a goner now.

Santa Monica is a fantastic city! I was just there a few weeks ago at the beach. Before you walk down to the beach there's a nice grassy area with lots of palm trees, but it seemed like there was a bum convention there that day! I've never seen so many bums in one place at a time. Also, there's a lot of people that smoke pot down by the beach, even the bums. The beach itself is just fantastic, and the sand is very soft! The views are spectacular, but of course it comes at a price. Like the others said, this place is very expensive, along with basically all of southern California. I'm not sure if I'd like to live around there, if I were to live anywhere in southern California it'd probably be in Orange County. It's one hell of an upgrade from Minnesota, but that area just seems extremely crowded. It has great restaurants and shops, and that's part of the reason why it's so crowded! I have a lot of pictures from Santa Monica that I took recently, so if you'd like to see them just ask!

What everyone said above is true. I used to live right next to Santa Monica I'm sure you're already planning on this, but come and check it out for yourself. You might or might not like SoCal.

One thing thats for sure, is that housing is going to be WAY more expensive than Arizona.

If you get a chance, I recommend a trip to "Philly Steak" for a hearty steak sandwich.

If it is still there, the shop is at 1551 Ocean Ave (Corner of Ocean & Colorado).

Enjoy Big grin

Ya, that's what I dread. I spend two hrs a day alone commuting here in PHX.

Scottsdale is great, but I've had it with the AZ summers.  fire

LOL, this seems to be a rather common consensus.

So, overall, what parts of the LA area would you like to live in if you were to work in Santa Monica?

Thanks everyone for your input so far.  Smile

Since the houses everywhere outside of Santa Monica are expensive as well, I don't see anything wrong with living in Santa Monica. Besides you'll be close to work, because getting on the freeway there at almost anytime is just a nightmare!!

So what about renting in the area?

Are the places in Santa Monica worth the money you pay for rent?

We (UTAette and myself) went there during our last New Year's vacation and we loved it !!!

We were in T-shirts/shorts in early January with bright blue skies and sunshine when it was freezing in Eire, heheheh.

nice Mid-east restaurant there. Very good food but expensive.

For what? A 3 bedroom? You can get a decent 1 bedroom in Santa Monica for $1000 or under. Also, place like West Hollywood, Brentwood, Southern Westwood and Palms all ring in around that level (even less for Palms, but it is a really bland place to live). If I were you, I would try and find a place in Santa Monica itself. It is a lively, vibrant community and there is lots to do. One of the best parts of the city to live in is the part close to the Venice/City of L.A. border. It is near lots of shops, restaurants and only 10 minutes from LAX.

Santa Monica has "Rent Control". Landlords are restricted from rent increases until the tennant vacates.

Nearly impossible to find a rental.

You'll wind up in Pacoima.

Actually, rent control is not as much of an issue anymore.

Not true, the rental market in Santa Monica is still rather robust

Good to hear. It's been a while since I visited my friend Kevin Mc Ewon (Mayor wanna be) for the latest scoop.

Any idea on rates? I'll bet a Kenmore washer carton on 24th st. rents for $2,000 p/mo.

Love Santa Monica!...something there for all walks of life. Has a unique mix of the fast-paced LA and laid back beach city lifestyle. Great apartments all over the place especially around 5th and Washington area (but not cheap). There is an incredible cafe just a block from the sea that serves breakfast all day called Jinky's... been there many many times, try the chicken and sun-dried tomato sausage, also a nice asian fusion restaurant that I love on 3rd street called Yangzee. Always something to do, somewhere to go, or something to see.

my sis lives in Santa Monica and i visit the area a few times a year. she's near National and Sepulveda and its a very nice area. as everyone has confirmed, it IS an expensive place to live. the pier is kinda cool.....but that oceanfront area IS swarming with the homeless. kinda sad.

its not too far from LAX, has a great weekly (or monthly?) open air market, it has the Apple Pan (great restaurant!), its real close to Venice Beach. i LOVE going to LA to visit.......but i dont think i would want to live there. the traffic is just so incredibly bad. alot of times, i'll get a call from my sister because she is sitting in traffic and has nothing better to do. unreal.

good luck!
