My First "official" Ride Along

Wed Feb 01, 2006 8:57 am

This Friday I will be doing my first ride along as a member of the police department rather than a civilian. Have to ride with the Reserve Coordinator until he feels I am proficient enough to be released to another officer. It'll be interesting to see how I'm treated differently now than before. Wish me luck Big grin

So my ride along was fun as usual. Rode with the sergeant and had a good time.

Almost immediately after I walked in the door, we got a medical, and he assigned himself to it along with another officer. We get out in the 11 degree heat (lol..) and fire up the cold Impala. Finds out that the Stalker remote doesn't work...great. At the call, we find an elderly male with signs of a stroke, gets taken away in the ambulance on the request of the family.

After clearing the call he tries the remote again, now that it's a little warmer, still no luck. So he calls the CSO and asks for a spare remote. We go back down to the station to do roll call and get a remote.

Get back out in the car, new remote doesn't work either. Ok, let's change batteries the next time we're at the station. Make a traffic stop for possible drunk, run a bunch of plates. Then we get a loud music call. End up being no music from the apartment we got called to, but three others in the same building. Three officers, one apartment each, problem solved.

Head back down to the station (again) to find batteries. Still didn't solve the problem, so no radar tonight.

Between calls we just drove around and backed up other officers and ran a bunch of plates. We then get called back to the same apartment complex (different building) about a neighbor refusing to leave the complainants apartment. We get there, and they are gone, but we were unable to contact the neighbor.

We then get another call from the same complex again, this time a domestic in the parking lot. Get there, and it's just a loud argument, so they're told to quiet down. While we are there, a call comes in about a car parked in the traffic lane with a male passed out inside. Hmm..drunk? Another officer goes to it, and once we clear, we head over as well. Sure enough, drunk. Take him down to the station to book, and he was extremely drunk. Asked if he would do a blood draw, and he agreed, so off to the hospital we go. As we're walking out, a state trooper walks in with his own drunk. At the hospital, the nurse missed the vein, so he was asked if he would do a urine sample instead, which he agreed to. While we were busy with the drunk, another call comes in about the same people from the domestic comes in.

After clearing the hospital, once again, we get called to the "domestic people". This time there are kids running in the hallways and people going between three apartments. Keep in mind, it's now 3:15 AM, and little kids are still up and running around. I stayed in the car, so not sure what they got, but the one officer brought his ticket book with him and called for an ICR when he went inside  Wink

After this call it was 3:30 AM, and he said he'd be doing paperwork the rest of the night, so I might as well take off. This was fine with me, since I had been up since 6AM anyways. Had a great time, and can't wait till next time.

Oh, I did offer to buy the food, but he said he couldn't accept free food.

Great trip report! Sounds like you had a good time and got a taste for the more "mundane" side of it!

Hope you're able to go again real soon and let us know how it went, too! Very well written and enjoyable to read!

Thanks, I will  Smile I am doing another one this weekend, with another department (that I am not affiliated with), so it'll be interesting to see how they do things.
