Poll:Palestinians Want Hamas Reform

Thu Feb 02, 2006 7:51 am

Nearly three-quarters of Palestinians want the newly elected Hamas movement to drop its call for the destruction of Israel.

http://english.aljazeera.net/NR/exer...B5-793F-4409-9CEA-A4F7E4985850.htm

While Hamas's international reputation is based on its campaign of attacks against Israel, its popularity in the West Bank and Gaza stems in part from its providing a safety net for some of the poorest Palestinians.

The Palestinians have spoken in the elections, electing Hamas. Poll from Al Jazeera says they also want reforms and peace with Israel.

Your thoughts please.

Seems about right...the vast majority of Muslims the world over just wants an improvement in their living conditions. The whole "death to Israel/the West" is really not a priority.

Hamas was elected mainly because Fatah was unelectable.

So what appears to be happening is that the Palestinians are saying that they elected Hamas for its people, and not its policies. Now they want Hamas to implement their wishes by adapting to the reality of the situation.

There is a very clear political message there, whether the Hamas block has the ability to act upon it and remake the political landscape remains to be seen.

As stated on another thread, this election was about sending the Fatah a message loud and clear, "quit stealing from us". It is well known that lesser officials were corrupt and that is what drove the vote. The stage has been set for some serious drama in the upcoming months. Either Hamas will change its ways, which it's people and the entire world save a few lunatics want, or the Palestinian people will be force to yet another low in their history.

Add to that, two Arab nations have stepped forward and told Hamas to foreswear violence and accept Israel's right to exist. Hamas really is boxed in. The only way they can effectively run Palestine is to follow the example of ANC and Fatah before them. If they don't they'll be foresaken by not only the disillusioned Paletinians who'll see their already tough situation get worse, but also by all but the most radicle nations (Iran), which also means their funding will dry up.

That will no doubt be a tough sell.

Agreed, particularly if they start getting their aid cut.

Then God Bless the Palestinian people, who, it seems, are finally getting fed up with generation after generation dying for nothing.

My concern here is when the next elections come up, is that if the people want to throw Hamas out, Hamas will try to hold onto power. That could be a huge problem.

If this sentiment is true, and I have no reason to really doubt it, we may have turned a psychological corner in the Middle East, insofar as the I v P conflict goes. I hope to God it is.

Agree 100% Gilligan. Hopefully, Hamas doesn't pull a "Yassir", and blow a golden opportunity to advance the fortunes of their people.

It seems quite natural. After all, so many both Palestinians and Israelis died since late 1940s and all of them just want to live in better conditions (for Israelis it means safer environment, for Palestinians better living conditions and creation of their own state).

I saw Hamas win as a result of two factors:
1. Hamas did a lot to help the poor
2. There wasn't much of a choice (people were not too happy with Fatah and Hamas was the only strong opponent). Situation might have been completely if there was a strong third party.

Agreed, but I think/hope that the urging of Arab states would carry much more weight with Hamas than the US/Israel, and to a lesser extent, Europe.
The next few weeks, and how Hamas handles the payrolls that will come due will be very telling, as will the reactions of the average Palestinian if payroll isn't met.

I think the past of Hamas must not be forgotten, but also they deserve a 2nd chance to change. The recent years have seen a change in the policy of Hamas, they actually stopped with the suicidal bombings, not like other groups. Call that a cynical policy to get elected, but it seems that Hamas is having a functioning command structure. This makes them more predictable and therefore trustworthy than the other terror groups.I think if it is possible to get Hamas on the negotiation table, chances for peace might very well get easier.

But it is too early to judge, I think we will se the real face of Hamas after the Israeli elections.

Hamas has a golden oppurtunity to really pursue peace with Isreal once and for all. If they blow it, heaven help them, because no one else will.

Not sure if you are being sarcastic, but it came out of Al Jazeera, and I wish the US media would report this in thier "mainstream" coverage.
