Well, It IS a BETA

Microsoft BETA's generally have a bad reputation and I know from personal experience, Used Windows XP Server BETA (later became Windows 2003 Server) - Used heaps'a BETA's of MSN (More lately 8.0 and went back to 7.5) - They're not the only products I've used but they're the only ones that come to mind, I like trying new things though so I'm a sucker for BETAs 15 minutes remaining on download! Big grin

Weeeee! I like it... It's... nice... It's different... It's Unyewsual! just gotta add google to the search bar now... I'm all for these tabs and the bar up the top not taking up as much space... It's certainly a far cry from the traditional IE look, considering I've used all versions of IE since IE2

Yes, this 'hole' is a lot of hot air:

1. the remote code exploit claim is false, theres no evidence to support it
2. IE is beta
3. the IE team already knew about the hole just after the beta release was finalised, and it will be patched in the next beta

If you are relying on IE7 for anything, you are an idiot. Its beta software, bugs like this are meant to be found NOW rather than later - it means the beta process is working.

I don't need it, If it died I'd be annoyed and a little inconvenienced but It wouldn't be a major problem, and I'm liking it so far, except I turned off the Main menu bar (File, Edit View etc) and can't figure out how to turn it back on at the moment... It's nice, I think I'll keep it

Screw IE7.

Firefox 1.5.0.1 is also available now, most users of 1.5 will find Firefox updates itself automatically.

I must check Opera too although I don't use that as much as I should due to incompatability with many secure sites.

I hate IE after using Firefox for a while, and I'm certainly not going to download a Beta version of anything from Microsoft. Microsoft products are unreliable as it is without using a Beta version.

Its interesting how views change - up until recently, automatically updating software was viewed as a negative thing because it had the potential to add code to your install that you might not want.

My Firefox install at work today announced the presence of the update, and so has both my home systems, but I dont recall ever turning this feature on. Its too late now, Firefox will automatically be updated on my next execution of the application.

I can distinctly remember the derision Microsoft got for including the automatic updates feature in Windows, for exactly the above reason even tho it was turned off by default, and yet here we are with firefox doing exactly the same thing and people think its fantastic.

It sucks.

Uninstalled. If anyone wants to uninstall it go to Control Panel->add/remove programs->check "show updates" at the top->Go down to the bottom of your list and you should see it somewhere near Windows XP something or other.

That's nothin'. There have already been security patches developed for Vista, the next Windows operating system that hasn't even been released yet. Hey, Microsoft might be onto something...develope the fixes before the actual product.

IE is still one of the main causes of Windows vulnerabilities and a major entry portal for malware of any kind. It is very unlikely that the newer version makes a major difference in that respect.

So please avoid!

It looks very interesting. It is a pity they did not make the address bar slightly smaller ( I can't remember the last time I had to enter an address that long into the address bar) and have other buttons in the backward and forward style. Apart from commenting on appearance I cannot comment on anything else as I have not downloaded it.

i downloaded it also.....its played havoc on some of my applications....grrrr..

it does load MUCH faster than before (and even faster than Firefox, which is my browser I use)......

i guess it will take a little bit of experimenting before I can pass an accurate judgement on it..

that being said, unless Firefox goes down the tubes, I'm going to be sticking with it, as I like it much better than all of the other browsers our there..

Potential hold-off patch: a) switch off network time synchronization b) set system date backwards by a few days c) perform disinfections as necessary.

I didn't need to follow the latest Windows threats all that closely, but wasn't there a disinfectant already for this newest worm?

Still: Good luck everybody running Windows!

I saw pictures of the current Internet Explorer 7.0 beta and the whole thing reminds me of Maxthon, the "shell" program for IE 5.0 and later. I'm using Maxthon 1.5.2 (build 21) and have no plans to upgrade to IE 7.0 until the final version is released.  Smile

Firefox 1.5 updates are now such that it will first try to download and install a patch -- just the changes necessary to make the move from 1.5 to 1.5.0.1. If that doesn't work out, then it will go ahead and try a full download of 1.5.0.1 and install that.

Wow. IE?

Haven't used it in 4 years. Took Microsoft what...5 years to catch up to Opera, Firefox and Safari. They certainly have some good programmers up there in Redmond...slow to catch up...slow to perfect...and totally irresponsible to the consumer. I bet that when MS releases a full version of IE, it will aready have updates available.

As for transfer of information or want to uninstall a piece of software without any hassles....easy...get a mac.

Asking around the office, three other people all have their Firefox settings to do the above as well, and theyve never changed the setting either.

This pops up the window after its downloaded saying 'update now or on next start'.

For people who fondly remember Netscape, there is also Seamonkey

http://www.mozilla.org/projects/seamonkey/

It's Mozilla based, and might be more attractive to some that Firefox. Complete suite (like Netscape was) in an 11MB download including mail/news, browser, web page composer and IRC client.

For some reason Microsoft didn't add any FTP client to the IE7 beta.  Sad Guess it's time for all of you using the beta to go find other FTP client apps.

You are correct RichardPrice, the default is "Automatically download...". Turns out my roommate changed it from that default to "Ask me what to do" shortly after I had upgraded to 1.5. I'm sorry for the misinformation.

Already done it, many years ago.

Also, the 'very compliant and easy web methods' in VBE2005 *are* IE (mshtml.dll).

All browsers are based on the Mosaic browser code, if you go back far enough (one of the reasons for having 'Mozilla' in the user agent string in all browsers - Mozilla origionally was Mosaics rendering engine before the name was adopted by the opensource browser project and all other browsers historically maintain compatability with it).

Netscape was based off Mosiac, and Netscape the company released the sourcecode to the browser suite so that the community could take over development. Mozilla and Firefox are heavily based off Netscapes code, if you take a look at the Mozilla sourcecode, you can see quite easily the Netscape legacy in the function names, includes, directory names and other stuff. Theres still a lot of Mosaic and Netscape code in there.

Pity IE is poorer at nearly all of those then, eh?

Security - better not mention this in earshot of IE, it will probably beg to execute any code you want. Infact, if you look closely at your computer, its probably got a red carpet laid out for any exploits. IE is a joke security wise, everyone agrees on that.

Crappy user interface - while FF may not have the best, it certainly has more function than IEs.

Slow as hell - only reason IE is quicker is because its always loaded (loaded at boot by the OS). Firefox is quicker at rendering pages.

Poor CSS - have you ever tried developing for the IE box model? Its broken, and by broken I mean fucked. Its horrible, doesnt have any relation to the W3C standard box model and it isnt consistent across versions of IE, even IE service packs change the way things work. IE has the poorest implementation of CSS ever seen. Dont even try and say FFs is worse, because firefoxes is miles ahead. I shiver at some of the hacks I have to use to get stuff to display properly on IE.

Javascript engine - again, Firefoxes is one of the better ones, IEs sucks terribly again because it doesnt follow the standards and breaks things.

Jwenting, Im actually scared that you have IT consultant listed in your occupations because your comment is completely ludicrous and bordering on stupid.
