Most Orderly Society?

Fri Feb 03, 2006 1:09 pm

Which society on Earth do you think is the most orderly?

Some people say Switzerland. Others say Sweden. Still others say Singapore.

(Hmm.... Just noticed that they all start with the letter "s"!  Confused Coincidence?  Big grin )

I just thought of a society that's even more orderly than any of the above: The Vatican!

I think that, ideally, a country should be as orderly as possible without affecting personal freedom.

Americans are probably too rambunctious to be too orderly, though.  Smile

I have to go with Switzerland. Their transit system is, well, clockwork itself. Same with their postal service. And they employ armies of people to clean the streets and sidewalks in the mornings.

I would go for Switzerland indeed. There is something boring and eery on those over regulated countries like Sweden, Austria and Switzerland.
I'd sometimes complain about the disorderness and casualness of the Netherlands and especially my hometown Amsterdam but then think: oh wait, if everything gets fixed here and people behave, we end up just like Germany or Sweden but then without the mountains.

I would probably go with the Japanese. Can't say exactly why. But it seems they have a high level of discipline and order.

To older I grow to more I like the orderly way, I think the Nordic countries are much alike in that sense, I like it when it's safe and things go smoothly, that's why I am paying the hight taxes. I can have adventures somewhere else.

But Singapore goes over the limit, I think. No wonder their subway is super clean: the fee for eating & drinkig there is 250 Euros, 500 for smoking...

The North Korean Wins here.
However, I will say Swiss comes first if we choose not to count dictatorships.

The Japanese are only orderly when someone (eg boss, teacher) is telling them what to do. Some of the most appalling manners I've ever seen have been from Japanese men. E.G. two days ago I saw a man in his 40s running and pushing in front of an older woman to get the last seat on a commuter train. A few months ago, I saw three men walking on a polished wooden, decorative platform next to their table in the imaculate lobby lounge of the Hong Kong intercontinental, then make derisive comments about Chinese people when the waiter politely asked them to desist in perfect Japanese. Tonight, a friend made truely shocking comments about homeless people - an incredibly ignored and neglected undercaste in Japan.

So Japan is orderly in the respec that there is a protocol in most social situations which people are bound to comply with, however, outside of those confines, it's feeding time at the zoo!

One wouldn't think Singapore is in that category (obviously prejudicial thinking).

I find Austria to be clean and orderly indeed. Sometimes I prefer to be disturbed with chaos, but sometimes I like it.

New Zealand, a peaceful, stable democracy.

Singapore has more organised crime than they would like to admit to. New Zealand is certainly the choice I would have of somewhere to move to if I had to leave my home country for precisely this reason, it's a grown-up society with no more problems than anywhere else but still an orderly and stable image.
Lead me not into temptation, I can find my own way there...

I have heard very good things about New Zealand, as well.

To me, the word "orderly" evokes a free society that runs extremely well, with a minimum of crime and a maximum of mutual respect. Good manners are held in high regard.

In an orderly society, people freely go about their business without fear of chaos. Citizens enjoy their lives in liberty and peace, doing what they please, going where they please, secure in their person and property under the law.

Civic services are provided as promised. Traffic jams are minimal. The economy and the environment are protected, and a responsive government represents the interests of all the people.

That, ideally, would be my idea of an orderly society. No society quite matches this ideal, but some are closer than others.

Texas is a great State, but I don't know if I would call it "orderly". It can be pretty freewheeling. Also, Texas is vast and its regions are varied. Austin has some pretty bohemian districts, for example, whereas Houston seems relatively straight-laced (or is it "strait-laced"? I can never remember which one is the correct spelling).
