Egyptian Cruise Ship Has Disappeared

Fri Feb 03, 2006 7:51 pm

"AP report: Egyptian cruise ship with 1,300 people on board has disappeared from radar screens in Red Sea off Saudi coast" CNN says...

http://www.cnn.com/2006/WORLD/meast/02/03/egypt.ship.ap/index.html

Quote:
An Egyptian helicopter spotted a lifeboat carrying three people, an official said. He added the search was being hampered by bad weather.

Doesn't sound good...  Sad

This is very sad news, and a tragedy, if true.

Fox News Channel is repeating the news from the AP.

Fox also reports that bodies have been seen floating near where the ferry could have gone.

 Sad

The ferry looks like a fairly large vessel, if the photo that Fox has been showing is accurate. And 1,300 -- what a huge number.

If these reports are true, what a shame that there couldn't have been rescue and recovery efforts mounted much earlier! Right now, it seems like they're just reporting bodies.  Sad

A bit early for that I think. Plausible, yes.

Interesting the ship didn't send a May-Day - or at least that's not been reported.

Also, CNN HN has just revised its caption from "Some 1,000 aboard" to "Some 1,400 aboard".

If the reports of sinking are true, I do wonder where God is for the people on the ferry in a time like this.   Why would a loving God permit such a thing to happen? There are so many tragedies in history. It all seems such a waste, a terrible waste.

It's said that Voltaire and others concluded from the discovery of Vesuvius that there was no sense or reason to "acts of God". Indeed, aren't we insulting God by attributing to him such things, and earthquakes and tsunamis?

The world can be a very horrible place.

From the preliminary reports this tragedy seems to bear the hallmarks of the Herald of Free Enterprise disaster - when a roll on-roll off ferry left Dunkirk bound for Dover with the front doors open and the ferry took in sea water. Within seconds it capsized.

God rest the souls of those in this tragedy.

I realize this ship was a ferry, but was it RO-RO?

Also, looking at the picture it appears as though several decks of superstructure have been added to the original ship's superstructure. Anyone have the history of this vessel?

It is not unusual to add decks on older ships to increase passenger capacity . . . . even the SS Norway (nee France) had the same thing done - two decks added to the superstructure when it became the Norway.

Ironically if you look at the company link below from the BBC website, then the pics of their ferries show many of them still in P&O colours, as if they were old UK ferries. Townsend Thorensen which was the company that lost the Herald of Free Enterprise became part of P&O soon after (or rebranded if it already was).

If it was one of the ex-P&O ships in their pics then yes it ws Ro-ro despite them saying it wasn't. But the ships there look somewhat different to the one in the news pics which looks more like a liner than a ro-ro ferry.

Looking at the picture of the ship on the link below it appears as though there is no bow door, but rather a car deck door on the starbord side forward on the hull.

There appears to be no question that the ship had superstructure added, and in the case of a capsizing, she would likely roll over pretty quickly - wonder how it affected her sea handling abilities?

One of the former SNCM ships I think.

Anyway - for her to have gone down that quickly there would have to have been water ingress below-decks, on the vehicle deck (filled with cabins now i think) - collision perhaps, or something more sinister. Holed belowdecks they wouldnt have had more than a couple of minutes - if the water was deep she would have gone right down like a stone. Horrifying.

My mistake - I misread the 89 (the old British ferry) as the 98. The Britsh ferries had front and rear opening doors, but as you say ANC this one would most likely have a rear door and perhaps one on the starboard - or so it appears.

And if she is flat bottomed like most ferries, then if water got into the vehicle decks (and i'm guessing on an old ferry - 30 years old) it wouldn't have been compartmentalised, then it would'n thave taken much for a tall ship like that to roll over Sad

Sure they do. In 1990, the F/V Aleutian Enterprise sank off of St. Paul Is. in less than 30 minutes after hauling up a cod end that was larger than expected and caused the vessel to capsize. They barely got off a distress call.

In 2004, the F/V Arctic Rose sank in the Bering Sea. It was last seen on radar by a sister ship at 2359, and disappeared, with its EPIRB finally issuing a signal some hours later.

And the Ferry Herald of Free Enterprise, which I believe capsized in the North Sea(?) after it's doors didn't shut/came open, flooding the ferry almost immediately.

Egyptian authorities apparently have confirmed the ship has sunk. My sincere condolences to everyone affected by this tragedy, no matter if they've been storming Danish embassies lately or simply led a peaceful life. No one "deserves" to die or lose a family member like that.

I thought the same. The decks have been added giving the ship its odd looks, this is how good it looked before. The same has e.g. been done with some of the ships (e.g. M/S Vesterålen) on the Norwegian Hurtigrute shipping line.

Not necessarily - if you can get a ship for a good price (or already have operated it for some time) and need extra capacity, it can be a good option. It appears the modification was made in 1991, eight years before it was sold to El Salam Shipping: http://www.faktaomfartyg.com/boccaccio_1971.htm

A far more complicated way of increasing a ship's capacity is to insert length, as seen on M/S Prinsesse Ragnhild (Color Line, Norway). But oh does it look better!

Edit: I keep forgetting that flag!

Perhaps complicated, but I believe smarter.

Alaska has ferries. Three of them (Malaspina, Matanuska and Tustamena) have been stretched rather than had superstructure added. One of the primary reasons - sea keeping ability. Smarter to stretch a ship that'll operate in rough, deep ocean swells. Malaspina and Matanuska were 352 feet long when built - they are now 408 feet long. Tustamena is 296 feet long - can't remember her original length.

But I digress . . .

Adding length may be more complicated, but it is a hell of a lot safer than adding to the superstructure. I've boarded fishing boats in the Bering that were so illegally modified with added superstructure that in some cases we immediately terminated their voyages as being manifestly unsafe.

What's with the Buy Danish flag Aloges?

just a small gesture of support for our little neighbour to the north... I found one less commercial, I'll use that to replace the "buy Danish" one.

Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened.

Yes she is, and renovated in the mid-1990s. New cabins, they extended the bridge forward, new engines, new vehicle elevator.

Wow. She DOES look different.

Thanks for the photo. I do miss Alaska.....

Depends, the way it was done on M/S Vesterålen and her sister ships probably didn't affect things that badly: old stern vs. new one; sorry but I didn't find any better photos.

Those modifications look pretty benign . . .

The ship in question above appears to have had a significant increase in superstructure. Obviously, one would hope, it was properly engineered and the proper eyes dotted and tees crossed and there was on question of her sea keeping ability.

Halls . . .

Here's a great link for you . . . a lot has happened to the Alaska Ferries in the last 5 years. New ships, retired ships (Bartlett), etc.
