Private Car Registrations/License Plates

Fri Feb 03, 2006 8:02 pm

Who has a private car registration number/license plate and why did you choose it?

Do countries other than the UK have private number plate schemes?

I've got "EW D1C".

A friend had it on his works van, and I managed to acquire it from him for a very reasonable price.

It attracts a fair bit of attention from the police - but most see the funny side of it.

On the Isle of Man you can buy your own personal numberplate. Only problem being it has to end in "MN", "MAN" or similar. Nice and cheap though.

America has vanity plates. Once saw a dentist with "GUMS" as the plate.

Many country's plates are restrictive because it's either lots of numbers or the letters denote particular towns or cities.

My old Astrhaa is 707cmf's former vehicle, hence the Elbonian license plate reads "707 CMF 73".

Don't exist in Portugal. I read somewhere that the DVLA makes about £80 million a year out of personalised plates in the UK.

I once had the registration B737 JFK and had it transferred to my new cars as it seemed pretty cool for an aerosexual to have.

You imported an F reg (+/- 89) left hand drive civic to the UK? Didn't that cost more than the car was worth?

In Ontario you can buy a vanity plate for about $200 with a maximum of 8 letters/numbers. You can also choose from a large choice of symbols (teams, clubs, associations) and have 6 letters on those plates for a cost of around $260.

In Quebec you cannot buy a personalized plate.

Here in California, they're about $50 or so, with an extra $40 (last I checked) a year to keep the plate.

And yes, I do happen to own SAXDIVA...

My license plate reads "CONVAIR". I had requested "880 990" but it was not allowed.

My parents' cars had a couple of interesting letter combinations on 2 of their standard state-issued plates (Massachusetts at the time).

My mother's car plate was 863-BBC from 1979 to 1992.

My father's plate was 300-NHL from 1983 to 1987.

My personal car's plate is nothing special (be a cold day down below before I pay the state $135 for a license plate) but when I was living in Maryland I came across a Cadillac with Virginia plate 747 CAPT. Coolest plate I've ever seen.

Here in Victoria, there's a huge range of personalized plates you can choose from, you can even get German-style plates! Seen a few of these on Merc's & BMW's & they suit them quite well.

The local registration authority even has a website where you can choose what you want,
