Siblings: Do You Get Along With Them?

Fri Feb 03, 2006 8:24 pm

Do you get along with your siblings? There's no rule which says you have to, but it's always good, I think, if you do. I don't get along with my sister (she's 34 and very much the older sister, much to my frustration) but I get on pretty well with my brother (he's 27. He does act like my bigger brother sometimes, though, which I don't like).

Pretty well actually  Smile we have the same condition so he just understands me right away and vice versa.

We were pretty mean to each other from when I was 13 until I turned 15 and started travelling more and more- and now that he's at boarding school and is only home during weekends and we don't get to see each other too often, our relationship is even better.

We still have our clashes... but I couldn't have hoped for a better brother really  Smile

When i was younger, my older brother (4 yrs difference) and I didn't get along in the slightest. Especially when he was in the army and I was at university.

After he'd come out of the army and been studying himself, and i'd worked abroad and then did my MA, much to everyone's amazement HE suggested we looked at renting a place together in London when we started work there.

Everyone thought we wouldn't make it last five minutes, but we actualy got on really well and realsised we were more similar than we thought. The only time we ever argued is if mum or dad visited and then it would be non-stop until the moment they left  Wink

We shared a place for 5 years quite happily until I moved out to live with my partner. These days my borther works in Iraq and although I would NEVER admit it to his face, I do worry about him.

I half a half sister too who is 9. She's cute and a lot of fun and we both give my father lots of grief. Even more amusingly she looks like she could be my daughter, which we've played up on in the past. Once in Cyprus with Dad, his considerably younger wife, and my little sis, I got complimented on my lovely wife and daughter - much to my dad's horror and much to the amusement of the rest of us  Silly

Same age group as you then Big grin

My half brother is 9 years younger than me, my half sister 16 yrs younger. Last time I saw them was my Step fathers funeral in Feb 2002. We got on OK there.

My brother and sister are twins. They're 23 months younger than me. We're getting closer as we age.

But those adolescent 3-ways were a blast....

I have two brothers, they're twins (but non-identical - in fact, they don't even look like brothers!), and 9 years older than me.

We all get along very well with each other, as they've always been quite protective of me when I was the little kid of the family - well, except for the inevitable, occasional "older brother" moments  Wink

One of them now lives in Berlin with his wife, so I don't see him very often, but we keep in touch on an almost daily basis. We always have a great time when we do see each other, and I get along very well with my sister-in-law, too.

My other brother moved from Venice to Trieste in 1998 (I was 12 at the time), and until my whole family moved to Trieste last year I didn't get to see him that often, either. Now that we live in the same town, I am very happy to be able to see at least one of my brothers every day - I realize that with little things like meeting for a coffee, or maybe going to his place for dinner... it's almost like having a newfound brother: with me growing up, our relationship has changed a lot in the past couple of years - it has become more "fraternal", in a way  Smile

I get on OK with my half-sister now. My niece being born 13 years ago actually kept us from not talking to each other for the rest of our lives.

Wish I could say the same about both my parents.

I've seen my father once that I can remember in 38 years and that was just for 1 day, and I swore never again.

I have just about disowned my mother who has just walked out on her 3rd husband, so she can get "involved" in who knows what way with some Iranian illegal immigrants/asylum seekers she has been doing voluntary work with.

I have two older brothers one is 29 and one is 26. I get along better with the one who's 26 than the other. But, I've had heaps of fun with both of them during the years.

I have a brother who is two years younger than me but I don't speak to him. As far as im concerned, I don't have a brother. He has caused so much trouble and heartache at home, I couldn't care less about him. My parents don't care much for him now.

I have a half-sister (same mom) and half-brother (same dad). My younger sister is 7 years younger than I and I adore her. Of course we fought as kids, but even then, as soon as she started crying I'd melt. You take your life in your hands if you threaten or hurt my sister (as her husband found out - very close call before he straightened out). On the other hand, my brother and I barely communicate. I never really liked him as a kid, and as an adult we have zip in common. We have each other's email but he hasn't responded to anything I've sent in over a year.

I get on fine with my sister. She pisses me off to no end when she comes over as she acts like she still lives here. She comes over when no one is home, makes a mess and then goes back to her place leaving it for everyone else to clean up. My mother dosn't seem to mind but it really irritates me.

For many years my brother and I didn't really get along all that well. That changed at some point about 7 years ago, though. Now I can honestly say that my brother is the most interesting and fun person I have ever met. In those questionnaires where it is asked, "If you could have dinner with any person ever, who would it be?" I always answer my brother. I'm rolling on the floor laughing within 15 minutes and it doesn't stop until it's time for bed. Plus he's really smart and we can argue about history, sports, foreign policy, etc. So yes, we get along extraordinarily well now  Smile
