I Got My First Job Interview!

Sun Feb 05, 2006 5:31 am

OMg I'm really excited! I just got an interview for a job! YAY! lol. It's to be a busboy at a Thai restaurant. I know, just a busboy, you gotta start somewhere though! I mean, I was kinda hoping to be able to be a waiter, but since I'm underage, I can't deal with liquor, but only three more years until I'm legal. I'm meeting with the manager in a few hours, so I'm really excited! And actually, I submitted two audition applications to two talent agencies here in the area, but I don't think I'll make it, but still! Hehe, I'm really excited about this. I mean, this would be my first job!  bouncy

Don't ever loose that attitude. Especially the part of working your way up.

There are too many kids who think the entry level type work is beneth them.

I think the only reason that I'm not in that group, is cuz since 15 is an awful hard age to get a job, so I am grateful for anything that would bring in some extra dough! I mean, I am a server at my school's functions, but that is only like, once or twice every other week, and the pay isn't all that great lol. Only two more hours to go! Big grin

Don't knock bussing... I did that for my first job every summer for 3 years or so, and I would say that I made close to $10,000... I would always work for well over $10 an hour with the tips, occasionally make more than the waiters, and a few times made over $200 a night.

Of course I don't know how busy your restaurant is, or how expensive it is, but it's a great job to start off with---much better than working a fast food joint

Agreed!
With that attitude you will very soon be a good employee in the job you want to do!
I wish you good luck on the interview and with you're future career!

I started in my very early days as dishwasher and mise en place cook, today I' am an experienced chef getting an interview on tuesday at Gulf Air as inflight chef!

Hey everyone! I just got back from the interview. When we walked in, the waitress recognized that I was Thai, and spoke to me in Thai, which totally caught me by surprise, cuz I haven't spoken Thai for about a month, and I didn't think I looked that Thai anymore, cuz of my highlights. But the manager was really sweet and understood about school and homework and stuff. So anyways, she is going to let me work next Friday and just test it out. She needs to figure out how the child labor laws will come into play if she hires me, and how she will pay a minor and stuff. But ya I'm really excited hehe! Big grin

Congratulations!

As was said above, don't ever lose the attitude that you need to work your way up. My first job was sealing envelopes, but that led to other good jobs and some good references for university. Keep working, everyone has to start from somewhere, you can't jump in at the top.

A busboy is the kid that hauls dishes from empty tables to the kitchen, sets the table for new customers, fills up water if needed, you know, that kinda stuff. Big grin

I'm not familiar with your the laws regarding sale of liquor in the US, but there may be a course you can take that'll allow you to serve it. My school runs a bar-tending course that gives you a certifcate for the responsible sale/serving of alcohol (yes, that sounds dodgy but it's actually a pretty exclusive catholic boys school. The school career councellors are really good and they openly tell us that bartending is a fun way to make some money during UNI so they arrange the course for us). This course is open to anyone from year 10 upwards - 16 year olds - so maybe you're a little young for the course if there's one over there but it may be an option later on if you get the job.

Hope friday goes well mate  crossfingers

Lemme tell ya somethin'

There are people who were once bus boys and are now owners and chain operators of some of the most well known restaurants in the world, so yes, you are right, you gotta start somewhere.

Here's a little fact. There is nothing like the feel of money in your pocket that you earned yourself, especially that first time. Money nobody gave you or that you are obligated to anyone else for. Every last penny of that first wage will be special and you will never forget it.

Good luck to you. It's your first step out into the world of work, and there is nothing in the world like being able to spend money you earned yourself. You'll see what I mean hopefully very soon when you get that job and start earning.

Good luck and enjoy your new job, there is nothing wrong with starting out by bussing tables and moving up from there, do a good job and you could be waiting on the tables in no time. Also check out the laws in your area about waiting tables and serving drinks if under age, I do know my niece who at the time was underage was able to serve drinks in the state of TN, so it is possible. Maybe the owner of the restaurant is unaware of that possibility or changes in the law.

Good luck and have fun in your new gig! And keep up that good attitude! And, right now, don't let it get in the way of your studies. I found that by working a p/t job, I made better grades b/c my life was that much more structured! Of course, whatever works for you...

You may need your parents to sign off an underage permit for you to work: Check in with your school admin office if you need one of these. And there are restrictions as to how many hrs/wk you can work and what hours during the day. Once you turn 16 (are you there yet?) child labor laws no longer apply as you have gained partial emancipation rights (another topic entirely).

In the State of IL, a minor 18 & above can serve alcohol legally in a family run establishment, which this restaurant sounds like it is family run. You can defiinitely bar-back along with being a busboy. You cannot accept shipments of alcohol, though. In my business, I routinely hire high school kids for one-off projects (mailers, filing, in-city document deliveries) and pay cash. And my past employees are all doing well in college and life, I am proud to say!

Damn straight!!!

Keep it up and feel free to keep the dialogue open. A lot of great women/men are regulars on this site and happy to help!

Little different here in NJ, you can pretty work pretty much where ever you want as soon as you turn 18(chain, casino, ect.)

Hey guys! I just returned from my first night at the restaurant, it was so much fun! I was there from 5 until 9:30PM, and OMG it was so much fun! It was really busy, but I like having a lot of things on my plate to do (no pun intended). I'm working on Sunday evening for a couple of hours, so I'm really excited about this! Two families that I know from school came in tonight. Actually, one of them was the guy who is doing my photoshoot on Monday lol, so that kind of caught me by surprise when I went up to him with a tray of waters, lol. Anyways, I came home with a box of fried rice, so I'm gunna go chow down.  Big grin

Hi Shaun,

I'm glad you like what you are doing. A lot of guys I know hate their job but all thy want is the money and benefits. So, you are doing something that you like. I bet that's can be a fun job and to meet a lot of new people. It's always good for someone young enough like you, to start working part time and going to school full-time instead of kids hangin' out on the streets and associating with gangs and doing drugs. But, you are right....everyone starts at the lowest position. When I was 15, I used to sweep hair around at my local barbershop and during the Xmas holidays, I used to stock boxes into UPS and FedEx trucks at my local packaging store for $7/ hr. I got my flying money there, that's all that counts. Good luck, buddy.

Kevin
