In other words, Exxon is scared by energy independence and its something they see as a real threat.

With less dependence, someone wouldn't be seeing a 10.7 billion dollar quarterly profit.....

Consider the source.

Wow, what news!!

It's not really a bad thing that we rely on foreign oil. Its the extent to which we rely on it.

If Bush, a man I have so far despised, is able to get us away from OPECs penis, I will forgive all of his ills.

Exxon will profit for a few years from this attitude. I sincerely hope that if they are incapable of being innovative, that every single employee of Exxon rots in the dearth of hell for being so short-sighted.

Innovation? That's what American corporations are allegedly about. If the people at Exxon are too stupid to see this, then let Darwin sort them out.

Meanwhile - to all of you at Exxon who actually do the work, GET OUT WHILE YOU CAN. Let the management take the fall for this stupidity. Typical blind capitalism.

Canada, which is not in OPEC, is the single largest supplier of crude oil to the US.

Rotten bastards at Exxon. I would love to have them eat their words. I want new, modern refineries, hydrogen power for cars, nuclear power proliferating, and Exxon and the rest to eat shit.

That's a little extreme, however.

Pot, kettle, black

Everyone is so pissed at Exxon. What is wrong with a 10% profit margin? Have you checked Google's?

But if Exxon were smart, they will redefine themselves. They should stop calling themselves an oil company, but an energy company. After all, if Hydrogen cars or something else finally gets to market, it will need to be distributed, and they are already well placed to do it.

I think Bush and Cheney have more or less done that in their own minds. But there's a couple of pipeline proposals to the west coast, and China is hungry. Don't take it for granted.

BP has already done so ("beyond petroleum") and is one of the largest producers of solar panels in the world today. Royal Dutch Shell also has a rapidly growing also still minuscule alternative energy division.

I would not be surprised if some of the smarter oil companies (I agree that XOM is not one of them) were to buy out large scale ethanol producers such as Archer Daniel Midlands in the near future.

By the way, Brazil has achieved energy independence by relying on sugarcane-based ethanol to power the world´s largest fleet of flex-fuel vehicles and all gas sold by Valero in CA already contains 7.7% ethanol, up from 5% last year.

If the US succeeds in implementing clean coal to liquids technology and producing cellulosic ethanol on an industrial scale, it might eventually be able to subsist on Canadian imports only. (Note to Canadians: Better beef up your armed forces NOW  Wink )

It's very dangerous to a countries economy to rely on other countries for their energy needs. That country is at the mercy to the other country and can be "controlled" by that country. Don't expect oil to be freely flowing in the future. We don't learn anythig till we are sorry. Energy independence is a must if the USA wants to survive. There are many USA enemies in this world that can easily dissrupt the oil flow by damaging refineries in other countries which i expect will happen. And people think "all is so well". Robert NWDC10

There is one problem with airbus. Though their products are engineering marvels they lack passion, completely.

Well I am still pissed they are contesting the 5 Billion they owe Alaskan Fishermen in punitive damages for Exxon Valdez.....they want it reduced to $40 mil.

I am still pissed that they are sitting on oil and gas field leases up on the north slope and are not developing them as required as par of the lease agreement with the state....the state a couple of months ago started to make noises about declaring those leases in default.

I am actually cool with the profit margin.....they have to do something with that cash....which means reinvesting it.

Have to give them credit for the advertising campaign.

The US is doing that, both on a federal and a state level. Problem is that there is a several year lead time in proposing a plant until it actually starts to function.

So look for the use of ethanols to increase as more of these plants come on line.
