Whom Do You Blame, If Anyone, For The Coarsening

Fri Feb 10, 2006 5:31 am

...of societal discourse?

Here are some possibilities:

1. Norman Lear, for his sitcoms (such as All in the Family);
2. Rush Limbaugh and others;
3. Public schools, for failing to effectively teach manners;
4. President Bush;
5. The Democratic Party;
6. The Republican Party;
7. The left;
8. The right;
9. Hollywood;
10. Madison Avenue;
11. The Internet;
12. Politicians as a whole;
13. Sports celebrities;
14. Other.

Thank you.

#2 (not just Rush, but political pundits in general), #12, and another option that isn't mentioned yet should be, #17 - CNN and the other 24-hour news networks.

It seems as though politics is no longer the act of governing a country; rather, it has become just another medium of entertainment to keep the ratings up on the news networks. I strongly believe that most of the animosity between various political parties is as a result of the media playing up the rivalries and the conflicts, to which the politicians rise up to meet the portrail set forth by the media.

All we see of government is the circus show that the politicans put on, as opposed to any of the actual governing they do.

Good points, everyone!  Smile And I welcome international factors, as well. I'm not cosmopolitan enough to think of them, unfortunately. It is a good thing we have an international audience that can supply them!

It used to be that there were strong influences in favor of civility. But church attendance is down, and many schools have featured a "let-your-hair-down" kind of looseness that emanates from a liberal viewpoint. If, as is said, parents themselves don't encourage civility in their children, then I wonder how the next generation is supposed to learn it?
