How to Lose Weight?

alright.

i'm in the process of trying to lose more weight right now.
in the past year and a half i have lost 40lbs.
i went from 230 to 190. my goal is 170.

i found that changing your eating habits and execise are the best ways to lose the weight.

i was happy with the preliminary results, but i want more. so i joined the gym and i love going. it's what i look forward to everyday now. i feel guilty if i miss a day.
weight training and cardio is what i am doing to lose the weight.

my eating habits have changed. i am more concious of what i am putting into my body. i eat 5 or 6 smaller meals a day. i try to avoid eating past 7:30 at night. no soda. lots of water.

you just gotta find something active that you enjoy and stick with it. the weight will start coming off.

good luck.

Like others have said eat less and move more. Or if you want the easy way out like so many others who are using that route these days, have your stomache stapled! Though do not take the last suggestion seriously.

How to Lose Weight?

Sat Feb 11, 2006 11:44 am

What I found to be a big food problem is eating out. Often I would eat out for dinner when I worked late. That meant I was more hungry, often ate fast food or foods heavy in fat and light in veggies and usually the larger helpings. One can with care eat out and still lose weight. Side salads instead of french fires, small burgers instead of the jumbo extra cheese burger with mayo, skinless chicken instead of deep fried breaded and skinned chicken and so on.
Try to eat at home and don't buy food when hungry. Look at the ingredient and Nutritional labels and choose the lower fat products. Eat microwave or air popped low fat butter flavored popcorn instead of potato chips. Eat a piece of fruit instead of a handful of cookies. Cut down on the size of the servings of food, especially fat loaded meats, cheese, carbs you put on the plate. Choose skinless chicken instead of steak. Certain fish at least once a week. Watch the use of fat laden salad dressings, butter, margarine and cheese. Stop buying snack foods, cookies and candy for home or work consumption.
Take long walks instead of a car ride. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. Park your car father out from the enterance of the store or mall instead of waiting for one closer. Work or personal stress as well as being bored can often cause one to eat more too, so try to reduce that where possible. Excercise can be a good way of dealing with stress.
It isn't easy to lose weight, but the benefits if you get closer to the preferred weight for your height are priceless.

All in all some very good advice from LTBEWR, but one thing to note is that vegetable fats such as those found in salad dressings are much better than saturated fats found in butter, margarine, and red meat.

Use olive oil for cooking. Eat plenty of vegetables. If they're not your bag, try grilling or sauteeing medallions of zucchini, yellow squash, sweet potato, carrot and red onion in a flavored olive oil such as rosemary-infused oil. Use a bit of freshly-grated parmesano on top with some salt and black pepper. Cut carbs several days a week. I'll often eat just meat and sauteed vegetables.

It is important to learn to cook for yourself. There is an amazing world of flavor out there that you'll never get from a fast food joint. IM me if you want some help.

Well I guess to each his own, but I dont agree with cutting carbs several times a week. My style is to plan my meals every morning or the night before, and I plan it for 40% protein, 40% carb and 20% fat and about 2000 calories. Also agreed that cooking for yourself is very benificial because you know exactly what you are putting into your body. If I know I have a busy day the next day I will cook the night before. I eat lots of chicken, and fish and also enjoy steak at least once a week.

A lot of it has to do with your activity level. Carbs are pure energy, and if you aren't burning the energy, they do indeed to go fat. Right now I'm more sedentary than usual, so I'm very carefull of my carbs, and no processed sugar at all. Once this stretch is over and I'm back to a more active routine, then I add back rice, pasta, etc., but still in very moderate amounts.

I do the same thing, but i stop eating at midnight because i usually go to bed at 5am. ( i work 3rd shift 7:30pm till 4am).

Here's what you should avoid eating:
- Fast Food (McD. BK... etc..)
- Fried food (Baked or grilled is better)
- Soda products.

I limit myself to 1500 calories a day. I work out everyday except Sunday, and sometimes i take Saturday off as well.

I dont know if you have the eqivelant in Canada, but I joined Weight Watchers last October and have lost 21lbs easily. I am still losing weight and it's getting easier.

I just look at the content of saturated fat in everything I eat ( that's what counts) eat loads of veg and generaly low fat foods.

I am on the lazy side so dont realy do any exercise, but if you do then that's a big bonus as the replys above have noted.

Good luck

eat less crap and exercise regularly.

Simple as that. Avoid processed foods, watch the calories and avoid foods which are heavy on fats and carbohydrate. Junk food and soda are killers. As is High Fructose Corn Syrup which finds its way into so many food and drink products these days.

Exercise? Buy a bike and use it if you don't fancy being a steroid-crazed gym bunny. Take a walk every single day, and do something which gets your heart beating faster such as a brisk ride on the bike.

Also remember that fast weight loss is not a good idea. Weight that comes off slow but steady is more likely to stay off, fad diets which give you a quick start and fast drop generally just mean you put it back again. Slow and steady weigh loss is accompanied by changes in your body and eating habits, and that's why it stays off.

The best way to lose weight is to sleep. When you sleep your body "rebuilds itself" and uses a lot of energy. Back in my slightly podgy days, i would always wake up and feel thinner than the night before. Also, drink lots of water.

However, sleeping isn't going to be a miracle worker if you eat crap. Do not, at all costs, have any fast food. Always have your 5 fruit and veg a day, but don't go over the top. Remember that fruit has sugar in = calories. You could be feeling really good as you have the equivelant of 12 or so fruit portions a day, but that won't help. Also vitamin overload is bad for you. So have your 5 fruits/veg's but don't go too far with it.

Of course, excersize. When you get up in the morning, stretch all your major muscles in your body. This helps get the blood flowing around you body and can actually make you more active during the day.

Also, excersize doesn't have to feel like a chore. Playing golf is excersize, but is enjoyable at the same time. Playing any sport is excersize. Even just going outside and playing a bit of catch excersizes your body.

However, if you are quite a bit overweight, don't just go outside and try to run as fast and as far as you can, it won't help. If you're not used to running and you force yourself into it, it increases your chances of having an injury, such as pulled muscles or worse. Then you spend a fortnight in a chair, putting on more and more weight. Walking is just as good as running, just takes longer, and lowers your chance of picking up an injury.

Also, if you are not losing weight, then don't let it get to you. Feeling depressed over your weight usually just makes you reach for the food. Just remember that on average almost 60% of your calories are burnt off just by being alive.

Simple.....If your NOT lazy that is....

1. EXCERCISE....Use stairs instead of elevators for example..

2. Eat small portions during meals...(And do not skip meals) either...Thats no good.

3. Dont eat late at night..Set yourself a time limit like 18:00. And dont eat after that...You can eat fruits past that time..no biggy..

4. Drink ALOT of H 2 O.......WATER... Between meals...

Thats it.

Join a club swim team lol. I remember my freshmen year when the swim season started I lost 15lbs in less than 2 weeks, no joke. Just shed right off. Great excercise, swimming. I swim during the off season to keep in shape- I feel great & can eat whatever I want. During workouts we usually burn around 2000-2500 calories an hour with hard sets. Can't get much better than that. Plus it's easy on your body (as far as structural stress) but works every muscle & is great for the heart.

Since August of 2005 to the present day I have lost 45 pounds. I was 215 this time last year and now I am 170 at 5'8. I want to loose 10 more pounds. People are really starting to notice and my uniform/clothes are kinda big on me now so I need new ones.

My Plan:
I read Men's Health now on what to do RIGHT when it comes to weight loss. I cut DOWN not cut out junk food. I can't cook so I bought little things like organic low fat milk, turkey meat as I no longer eat pork that much, low fat yoplait(it's so good) STOPED going to mcdonalds and whole wheat bread! Most importantly I was going to the gym and running on the treadmil and mixing in Tae Bo on other days. I averaged 3 days a week starting out. People fear workouts! If you want weight lose to have to burn it off, burn more calories than you consume! It has worked for me. Now I can run 3 miles on the treadmil when it used to take me 20 minutes to go a mile cause I was not in good cardio condition.

Now my goal is to loose 5-10 pounds this month before my birthday in March. Before april I want a completly flat stomach. Once I loose enough body fat I'll start some strength training!

Cut fast food, eat sensible portions, and WORK OUT! EXERCIES. It is a comitment and a very hard one! My 2005 resolution started 8 months late but I stuck with it and now im 44 pounds lighter! You can do it, just try! Remember anything you eat in moderation won't hurt you.

This isn't intended to be silly or smart-a$*ed but working a lot of hours helps. Whenever I work 80-90 hours a week, I not only had no appetite but had to force feed myself. I would always lose weight whenever working 80+ hours per week, especially during periods of hot weather.

I found the best way to lose weight was to go to a dietician. She gave me a diet were I eat a lot, yet lose weight. The key is to eat 5-6 times per day, drink lotsa water(I drink at least a gallon a day), walk 30 to 40 blocks and go to the gym.
This way you lose weight and you don't regain it.
So far in 3 weeks I've lost 3 kilos. She told me that the goal should be set to 6 months, so the weight doesn't come back.I started at 106 and have to go to about 85.

Cut out the over eating and workout ... HARD

I joined a local Boxing club , I am sure their are harder work outs but it is pretty tough. Lots of abdomen work, and upper body strengthening. Plus a great stress release pounding the bags. I work out about 20 nights a month for an hour , I have not lost alot of weight yet (15lbs 2 months) but I have dropped two pant sizes. Try to find a work out routine that you enjoy , and make weight loss a secondary issue. The weight will come off if you stick to it and enjoy going.

Good luck ,

I think I was six years old when I learned that a healty diet and exercise are how you both lose weight and keep it off. Learning how to get the willpower to actually act on that knowledge, well, that's the difficult part.

What I did is I reduced cabohydrate and have more of protein.
And do a lot of excercise and drink Thai herbal tea every evening.

My waist size was from 36" and now 31.5"

But I'm working out more at the gym to get my body built.

Just wanted to verify this for anyone interested in the best possible exercise. Of course, follow the eating tips given by all thus far (I unfortunately do not, but I'm 20 so my metabolism is still high), and exercise as much as possible. I've found that one hour of hard swimming in a pool or the ocean will burn more calories than just about anything else, and it has the added benefit of working every major muscle group. I joined my high school waterpolo team my sophmore year at 225 pounds (I'm 6'3"), and by the end of my 2nd season I'd dropped basically all my body fat and ended up at 180 pounds, despite the fact that I was eating more than ever to try to fuel myself for practice/games. If you have access to a decent length pool, nothing is better!

The key to a healthy life is a concept called 1x3x7=21. It works like this:

1 - think one happy thought a day
3 - exercise (preferably aerobic/cardiovascular) three times a week
7 - get seven good nights of sleep (including NREM and REM)
21 - eat 21 nutrititous meals a week (can be split into smaller portions, but should equal 21 full meals)
