Turin 2006 Opening Ceremony - How Did They Do It?

Sun Feb 12, 2006 3:41 pm

I was watching the opening ceremonies for the 2006 Olympics in Turino.
There were certain parts where they had objects hanging from the ceiling.
Wait one second, there IS NO CEILING!
How was the whole thing even possible?
I thought maybe that they were hanging off of cranes from the side.
But I watched a clip again, and it didn't look like that to me.
How exactly did this work?

Hmm... maybe they were suspended from the sides of the stadium. I didn't notice these objects. What did they look like?

There were people "flying" through the center of the stadium, and spheres that were meant to look like balloons also moving through the air in a very scripted way.

Since they moved in winding paths (not linear) it was something more complicated than a simple line strung from one end of the stadium to the other. It looked pretty cool.

Maybe guided by circulated air?

They were definitely suspended from the sides of the stadium. I heard the system is very complex, and therefore allowed objects/people to move in various directions.

I don't recall which parts you're referring to. I remember they had one part where there were a bunch of acrobats who formed a dove, but they were definitely hanging off of a screen with something to anchor the ropes at the top. Some people hung off the Olympic rings. Other than that, I can't remember anybody flying around.

It's quite common to have these sorts of objects hanging froma grid of cables suspended above the stadium. They did it at the 2000 opening ceremony here, and then in Athens 2004.

It's clear they were suspended by wires and trusses. But how they accomplished the movement (large oval shapes, etc.) is still a mystery:

Possibly the three-wire technique, the same way they move cameras at sports games. You have a camera attached to three wires, and by adjusting the lengths of each of the wires (reeling them in or letting them out), you can move the camera pretty much anywhere at any height.

Thanks for the feedback!

That makes a lot of sense.
I think this could be exactly how they did it.
