What Do You Think Is Romantic?

Sun Feb 12, 2006 9:17 pm

As Valentine's Day is nearly upon us, what do you think is romantic?

I'm probably going to shoot myself in the foot here, but I don't like the usual typical V. D. stuff: it's all too commerical and quite meaningless. WOW! A rose. How lovely. I bet it took you all of 10 seconds to buy that.

For me, something like walking along a beach together is very romantic, as is sitting atop a cliff and looking out into the horizon.

WOW! A shop-bought card. I bet it took you all of 10 seconds to buy that. A handmade card is much better - and it shows you've actually thought a lot about it and put proper effort into it.

I don't understand why it has to be on one specific day and why people think you have to spend a lot to impress.

I can't even spell the word.

I think it starts with an "R".

SO, needless to say, for me it's the old standard. Candy, Flowers, Card, perhaps jewelry . . .

Long as it gets the job done.

The combination of media and business owners really are making up that day just to increase their business. Just the as it works with other "celebration days" like "Mother´s day" and "Father´s Day" - and of course "Christmas".

Coming back to the original question: If you really want to treat your partner something special, look for something unusual (a "mini-break" or some theatre/musical tickets) but present this only at VD, but carry out the actual event at a different time. That way, you will have the advantage that your partner gets the "treatment" twice (for only once the price and the thinking) ...

Never have cared much for Valentine's Day. On Tuesday evening we are going out for dinner with a girlfriend of ours, but that's a coincidence.

We live about four miles from the beaches and these beaches here face north-west. In June and July it doesn't get really dark here until about 11:00 p.m. We'll cycle to the beach after dinner and sit outside one of the less well visited beach cafés and drink coffee and Cointreau until after the sun has gone down. That is quite romantic. And much more so than a very commercialised Valentine's Day.

Valentine's day. Ah... another marketing scheme. Just another commercial holiday.

...which I give in to (meh..) I bought a necklace. I won't be able to see my gf on valentine's day though, so she's getting it today.

I don't do Valentines cos I think it is commercially exploitative crap ... but I do believe in romance .... the most romantic thing my partner has ever done for me was to surprise me by coming home a month early after 15 months working overseas ... he gave up the chance to go to several places he had always wanted to go ... and somehow persuaded LH to make an illegal reroute on a Star RTW so that he would be home unannounced for my birthday

THIS WORKS EVERYTIME!!!

I send my girl flowers to her work for no reason at all. I can't tell you how much "affection" I received from her that night she got home!  bouncy

Well, since no one has ever done anything romantic for me at all, I would be over the top getting a store bought card and rose.

Well, if you're trying for romantic, VD is probably a good thing to avoid! Big grin

We're going out to dinner, but we do that several nights a week anyway, so it's not that big a deal, we have picked a place we've never been before tho.

To me being romantic is just doing the things that show you've really learned whats important to your partner, then doing it for no reason at unexpected times.

I do think cards are romantic as you do have to read them and pick one out to give, though really romantic gestures are the unexpected and surprise ones.

I'm with you on that, especially if it involves watching a sunrise... *sigh*  Silly Other than that, I just heard "Nine Million Bicycles" on the radio, that one I find romatic as well.

Valentines day is something i dread.............only because i work in the 'flower' business and i'm on the go from sun up till sun down. Still, on that day at least every woman i talk to is friendly and smiling! I've even had a few ask for my number, but having just delivered her roses or whatever i didn't really think it appropriate to be handing out MY number, so i give the number of the company! Yes, i even deliver to guys....one guy last year got all p!ssed off because i delivered alot of things to him! I simply said i was doing my job and that someone thought highly of him, lol. So romantic to me is definately something other than flowers, like watching the sunset from a beach on a warm night, but each to their own.

Cheers

Ps, Mothers day is the best! Not a single sad face to be found, even if they lost their child and i give them flowers, they still beam through their tears.
