Computer Help Needed... Urgent!

Mon Feb 13, 2006 5:16 am

I'm not an expert when it comes to hardware. I was just on my computer (not this one), and it turned itself off. So I tried to turn it back on, and a blue spark pops out the back... Anyone know what is wrong and what I need to do...?!

Thanks in advance for any help  Wink

Tom- I'm guessing the spark came from the area of the power supply?

If so, DO NOT TURN IT BACK ON AGAIN!!

See if you can get a replacement power supply, because when those things go bad you can lose your entire system with shorts, spikes, or inconsistant voltage..

What make/model/etc?

blue sparks are never good. Sounds like you might have a faulty power supply. Remove the power supply from the PC and have an experienced electician give it a once over. Turning it on again may destroy your PC / yourself...

Most probably your power supply is fried.

You'd be lucky if it's just a defective power chord.

Steps:
- Unplug the power chord from the wall socket.
- Check if the power line is plugged in correctly on the computer side.
- Check the power chord. If it is charred, its isolation defective or some other visible defect, your computer may have survived and could possibly work again with a new power chord. But it could very well have suffered damage as well, so having it checked would still be advisable (risk of fire!).
- If none of the above is true, the power supply is almost certainly fried and you definitely need to get professional service for your computer.

Do not leave the computer connected to the power outlet if it could be defective!!!
There is a risk of fire in the worst case. Don't take any chances!

Tom, if it was your power supply, it will probably blow the computer up if is turned on again, and maybe it has short curcuited.

Did it go through the process of shutting down or did it just go off.

If you can you should take it into PC World, or somewhere similar to get it checked.

Another good suggestion, buy a curcuit breaker and put it into the wall socket, so if there is a power surge it will not blow up your computer.

I'm going to buy one tomorrow  Smile

I think so, yep.

Where would I get this from? How much are we looking at in terms of cost?

Quoting Airlinelover (Reply 1):

It was a custom built one, had it a couple of years.. I'll see if I've got any info lying around..

THAT IS GOOD! THat will make replacing the power supply easier..

Most computer retailers carry them, I know you are in the UK, but look for places like Best Buy, COmpUSA, etc (US stores) in the UK and they -SHOULD- carry them..

As for cost, I had to replace mine recently, cost me about.. $60-70 USD.. They're expensive buggers, but needed..

Take your computer up to a repair shop if need be, that way they know the size you had (power-wise) and can tell you about how much it would be..

I just hope your system is not already fried..

That looks ok. 500W  yes

Damn cheap £12.  Wow!

I might be wrong but......

The more W's (400W, 500W) the better, I think.

Try and find out what is currently in the back of your computer and get the same Wattage.

I wouldnt worry about that as long as its higher wattage than what he has...and it looks like he has a 350W standard ATX power supply. A higher watt power supply will just support more devices (IDE, Serial, USB etc)
Power supplies are cheap, you can pick one up for $20 or 12 pounds.

I'm going to go for this one. If it turns out to be crap, I'll just blame Airplanepics Big grin

The dimensions are exactly the same as the one I've got, so should fit in nicely.

As long as he gets one that is the same or (preferrably) higher, he'll be fine..

Wrong.. CRAPPY power supplies are that cheap.. You get what you pay for.. Now, if it was like.. $70 with a $50 mail in rebate, that'd be ok..

The wire of the fuse inside your computer just got partly turned into atoms and got itself sprayed onto the inside of the glass fuse. The ionised air conducted electricity for a brief period and caused the flash. Sometimes this is accompanied by a loud pop as the glass breaks under gas pressure.

You should do ok if you buy it on flea Bay. I got a 450w power supply for my IBM and it ran me about ten bucks plus shipping. I had it in three days from a guy on the coast.
