Scuba Diving

Mon Feb 13, 2006 10:11 am

Hey everyone!!! Just finished my open water SCUBA certification this afternoon. Looking to see if anyone knows of any good places to dive in florida or south carolina. Are there any other divers in the forums. Would love to hear any recommendations tips or stories that ya'll have.

Stop by your local dive shop and ask... I started to get my dive certification so I could dive with my then girlfriend but, post 9/11 got laid off and she decided she didn't want an unemployed boyfriend.

I did the pool sessions, but it's been so long, I have to retake it all. Contacted a dive center about 3 hrs from here, $299 for 2 people, full certification. All I need is fins, mask, and snorkel. Doing it sometime this spring/early summer.

I'm a certified Scuba diver as well. I've done a handful of dives here in FL (don't have the time for alot these days)

Some of my favorite:
-Devil's Den near Gainesville...big sinkhole in the middle of a field, about 50' of cave-ish diving
-Crystal River..one of the best, clear water, beautiful fish, and alot of manatees...really clean freshwater
-St Augustine...the Navy dumped alot of A-6's off the coast, you can dive out there and swim around the old airframes, which are now artificial reefs.

Pretty much any wreck dive is going to be awesome. Although it's sad, when they finally do sink the USS Oriskany, it'll be one hell of an interesting dive, near Pensacola. http://www.ussoriskany.com/id18.html

I've got my PADI open water. I was gonna do Advanced open water but then my good mates on my toes intervened (ingrown toenails), cut your toenails properly because they sure aren't fun when they're ingrown.
I'm gonna do my Advanced this summer instead  Smile

I diving and go as often as I can (which is getting more seldom lately).

I have been in:

French Polynesia
Cozumel
Hawaii (Big Island)
Grand Cayman
Cabo San Lucas
St. Martin

I'm finally getting my c-card next month....brrrrrr..... in the waters off Monterey Bay. Then I'm off to Roatan in May to go diving. Was going to do a referral and finish my test dives in Roatan, but figure I might as well do the whole thing now and get it out of the way. I want to maximize my time diving all the different sites offered at Roatan (walls, wrecks, sharks, dolphins, etc...)

It's been swell, but the swelling has gone down.

Hey I feel your pain with the cold. The air temp when I went in the water for my checkout dive this weeked was 38f. Later in the day it warmed up to a balmy 42. I don't know that I had ever been that cold. Some people from the local dive shop are going to Roatan pretty soon, that sounds like a really nice place. I dove devils den near gainsville this week and that was pretty kool. Looking forward to doing some ocean dives.

 yes

I've got my Advanced Open Water.
I've only dived on bonaire (Dutch Antilles) though. Haven't gotten the chance to practise this hobby elswhere, especially not in the merky wtaers of Holland  Smile

Anyways, I can really recommend the island. Very nice underwater scenery, a few wrecks (a.o. Hilma Hooker, a former smuggling ship). Also a lot of fish and sweet blue ocean.

Dude, great for you, it´s a lovely thing.

The best dive I had was at the Rainbow Warrior in Bay of Islands, NZ. It was nice, but the water isn´t so clear.
Great barrier of Reef is just F***ing great.

Have done in a few places here in Brasil also, wish I go to Fernando de Noronha here, they say is just the best.

Enjoy were you can.

My last dive was about 1year ago. I´m a Padi Dive MAster (wich is the lowest, but still fun)

I have been certified for 6 years now, and have been diving in the Grand Cayman (The Wall), very cool, the dive itself was fantastic, and had it not been 9-11-01, the whole day would have been the same. I have also been to Cozumel, and thought it was decent...San Diego pretty much sucked, and Hawaii, Cathedral #1 was probably the best dive Ive been on. I havent been in SC/FL yet but Id like to someday.

I have my open water certification through PADI as well as some extra training on the US Marines Diving Program. Would love to chat about it with you. Feel free to contact me anytime!

I have gone diving on the Great Barrier Reef - Australia, West Coast Vancouver Island - Canada, Maui - Hawaii and somewhere in the Carribbean.

Cheers!

Me too diving...

Rescue level, started in Indonesia, been underwater in Malaysia, Philippines, Red Sea, Venezuela, Bonaire and recently and unvoluntarily kissed a white shark in South Africa.

And after I have killed my boss and signed my own holiday application, Belize and Honduras are waiting for me.

Pennekamp - Key Largo is good

There's also some great wrecks and odd stuff in the gulf - mostly out of Destin or Panama City.

Lower Keys are pretty good as well. Dry Tortugas used to be a a great snorkel from the shore but I don't think they allow this anymore. Pretty sure that you can still dive it from offshore though. They're 1-2 hours west of Key West.

I haven't been in years, but you used to be able to do pretty good grabbing lobster from Hollywood Beach.

welcome to the club! i've been an avid SCUBA diver for a few years now. Anywhoo, for florida, definatily hit Key West, and if you do, use Southpoint Divers & tell 'em one of the "Divin' Dooley's" sent you. There by far the best dive shop on the island.

Hey thanks for all of the advice everyone. Just finished up my nitrox class about an hour ago. Now I can stay down longer. Now I just have to make my way to one of these dive locations so that I can enjoy this great sport.

Brrrr is right, but I'll bet it's gorgeous, all that kelp and sealife. Lived there for 3 yrs, always wanted to dive it though.

Interesting dive huh? I'd imagine it's a little bit cold right now, it was when we went in October.
